Fascinating to hear him speak! I went to the Pirate exhibit back when it was in Cincinnati. Thank you for sharing your story and the artifacts, Mr. Clifford!

It was this ship that got me all excited about finding treasure when I was young. And working at a small mint it is the reason I do spanish cob replicas that are all related to shipwrecks. each one dated for a different fleet or shipwreck. I have saved the Whydah for last. As it is the ultimate treasure for me. I, like many cob collectors would love to own a piece of the Whydah. But I am glad Barry did what he did so all can see this incredible piece of history. It combines all the elements of what we dream about being treasure.

This REAL PIRATES exhibit now has a permanent home in South Yarmouth on Cape Cod and will open Summer of 2016; it's sister museum in Provincetown - the Whydah Pirate Museum, which Clifford opened 21 years ago - will also remain open.

I still get goosebumps when i read about this particular finding. My reasons for it: Between Aug 1958 and Aug 1960 i was stationed at oTIS AFB in Falmouth. Spent some time on the Cape highway and around the "dunes" where this all took place......which is off "Welfleet" if i recall. I mever even heard about the Whydah. ........1980-1982 ( somewhere in that range ) I had bought a Metal Detector and shortly after started getting a magazine 'Treasure HUnter" There was an article in there on month which almost "pinpointed" to the area that the wreck was supposed to be lying in.. Of course my thoughts started to run away with me, but being a single father raising 3 sons i didn't have any $$$ or opportunity to do anything about it. FINALLY........"discovery of the Whydah" made the news. And guess what? She was sitting on the bottom seemingly in a fairly good ;position, just about the EXACT location as had been mentioned in the magazine. Someone eventually had "triangulated the location" to almost a pinpoint. When she was found, her mast supposedly was...................ONLY 10-feet below the surface of the water. How awesome was that? Yep, it sure is nice to have a lot of $$$$$

I understand wanting to keep things "as they were found". But the concretion on the bell doesn't really need to be there. I'd rather see the entire bell without that ugly looking mass on top of it for no good reason. Truly a fascinating story and find. My buddies nonnie owns a beach house down in West Yarmouth. Will have to mention this story to him.

so, according to this dude, the Atocha treasure is not "pirate" treasure?
@matthewpuleo5678
@matthewpuleo5678 3 жыл бұрын
The Atocha shipwreck was a spanish galleon which wrecked in 1622 off the marquesses in the fl keys. It wasn’t a pirate ship, rather a royal Spanish treasure galleon. The Whydah is the only known and authenticated pirate ship found.
@RockerDave12
@RockerDave12 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewpuleo5678 I did NOT say the Atocha was a "Pirate ship", but rather the treasure aboard her, and the guy says the treasure is not "pirate" treasure. Get it right, dude.
@matthewpuleo5678
@matthewpuleo5678 3 жыл бұрын
@@RockerDave12 I was only trying to offer friendly context to you, no need to get aggressive. I had assumed by your prior comment that you thought the Atocha treasure was indeed pirate treasure, as you came off as questioning whether what Barry said about the Atocha’s treasure was true. Again, call it what you want but the treasure aboard the Atocha was NOT pirate treasure. It was a mixture of the king’s treasure, the Catholic Church’s treasure, money to pay off war debts, and personal treasure being shipped back to Spain as well as personal affects owned by passengers aboard the Atocha.
