"Charming tune". "And a fine musician. We're lucky to have him". "Yes. He is not there by chance, Mr. Nelson".

After years, i can't hear other versions of this song. THIS version made by Barry Dransfield is the only one for me, so inspired and blunt.

Agreed ! It is clearly the best version by far .

I love Barry Dransfield's traditional English folk style. This version in of this song in particular makes me think of off duty sailors sitting and listening to the ships fiddler playing a mournful but soothing song about a girl that got away on a warm moonlit night.

This is amazing, love Barry Dransfield. Check out Steeleye Span's version on "Time", Gay Woods' voice and Peter Knight's violin are a delight. I didn't know so many people appreciated Barry Dransfield! Thanks for posting this!

So soothing this one. I think he plays the violin on this but, I wonder how it would sound with a viola?

The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row, my love and I. Down in the meadow the other day A-gathering flowers both bright and gay, Gathering flowers both red and blue I little thought what love could do. I put my hand in some soft bush, Thinking the fairest flower to find; But I pricked my finger to the bone And left the fairest flower behind. I leaned my back against an oak, Thinking he was a trusty tree; But first he bent and then he broke And so did my false true love to me. There is a ship and it sails the sea, It's loaded deep as deep can be. But not so deep as this love I'm in I know not if I sink or swim. Oh, love is handsome and love is kind Oh love's a jewel when first is new. But as it grows old love waxes cold And fades away like the morning dew. The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row, my love and I.

When he said sweetest you wrote fairest regarding the flower also i noticed a slight difference between what he said and what you wrote which one is the more precise?
