Much of the plundering , pillaging -and worse-was associated with the often unpaid mercenary forces which had made life a misery for the ordinary people of Germany in the-preceding centuries wars ( of religion and the 30 years war). The 18th century saw the rise of belief that war could be made more tolerable by largely eliminating mercenaries and establishing the status of 'non-combatant' i.e. leaving civilians. out of a conflict between paid professional armies. Although the Duke of Marlborough plotted his copybook in the War of the Spanish Succession by having his troops burn many Bavarian villages he did, at least, establish the practice of paying for provisions. By the mid -century"foraging' expeditions of the kind depicted would largely have ceased.

This scene of Barry on horseback is mirrored in Brad Pitt's 2017 War Machine to mock General Glen McMahon as a military usurper and imposter. It is in Pitt's European motorcade sceen at 1hr 14min, it is contrasting General McMahonm with Frederick the Great, and mocking him.
