When we look at Stanley Kubrick's career, you might think he deliberately set out to make one film in each genre. He never repeated himself. Even more amazing, each film is noteworthy within it's own genre. The one science fiction film he made is one of the best science fiction films ever made. The one period piece he made is among the best period pieces ever made. The one horror film he made is still talked about today. The one modern war film he made is the one quoted by all the guys I know in the armed forces. You can't talk about gladiator movies without mentioning Spartacus. He was hands down the most talented director of his time.

I wouldn't say that's quite what he did. He made three or four war films (Full Metal Jacket, Paths of Glory, Fear and Desire, and Spartacus though lesser so), three crime films (A Clockwork Orange, Killer's Kiss, The Killing) and two comedies, if we don't count Barry Lyndon (Lolita, Dr Strangelove). And if we're to break genre down into its most basic form: Comedies (Dr Strangelove, Lolita) Thrillers (Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, Killer's Kiss, The Killing) Drama (Lolita, Eyes Wide Shut, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Barry Lyndon) Sci-Fi (2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange) So really The Shining is his one true one-and-done genre film.

The scene inside the estate with Lady Lyndon signing away her wealth for the various debts Barry accumulated over the years is so well choreographed and photographed. The symbolic light of the sun outside as it sets on their vanishing world with the shadow low-lit light to their left. Its' a sign of things to come for the aristocracy.

Easy come, easy go. The downfall of Redmond Barry in this refashioned tale of Thackeray was the ill advised goal of being admitted to the aristocratic class. He made many mistakes after his marriage to Lady Lyndon, and most of them were due to this false goal of pleasing these shallow people. Now most of them have vanished and are to be mostly worthy of our pity.

"They don't make them like they use to" is such a tired phrase. I don't think they ever made them like this. There are years of love, betrayal and grief crashing into each other in the glances of these final shots. Kubrick's confidence in holding a scene like this, communicating all this emotional information without dialogue, is why he is the master.

Because Kubricks' attention to detail couldnt substitute for his lack of natural artistic touch. Very mechanical to draw any intense interest by the audience. In comparison, The Duellists, which was apparently inspired by Barry Lyndon, was better acted, and as rich (perhaps even more) visually and aesthetically although shot at 1/20 of B. Lyndons' budget and by a rookie, at the time, film director.

So the question is what was she thinking while she was staring at nothing. Most of us have been in places where we take a moment to contemplate the implications of our life choices. Ostensibly, this is probably the first check to him she's signing and she is realizing that she will have to do this every year and be reminded of a darker part of her past for the rest of her life, and that alone can be a burden on one's soul. But there is an additional subtext here. Had she any love for Barry, she is also dreading the moment she'd be informed she no longer has to make the payments.

I read the prominence of the date 1789 in the movie slightly more ambiguously. Yes, 1789 was a watershed for the aristocracy to be sure, but 26 years later essentially the ancien regime was re-installed, for the best part of another century, depending on which country you focus on. Some had died, and life for them was not the same afterwards, but really history would parallel the movie - a brief period of being eclipsed, followed by the re-imposition of their status. I'm quite sure Kubrick had all this in mind. Money begets power, and power is ever exerted for the benefit of the monied.

Utterly baffled and beaten, what was a lonely and broken-hearted man to do? Barry took the annuity and returned to Ireland with his mother to complete his recovery. Sometime later, he travelled to the Continent. His life there, we have not the means of following accurately. But he appears to have resumed his former profession of a gambler without his former success. He never saw Lady Lyndon again.

The annuity is actually quite generous - about £50,000 a year in today's money. Enough to live quite comfortably, although of course, it's a pittance compared to the rich lifestyle Barry has accustomed himself to. But it's really just a bribe, a way of ensuring that Barry is effectively exiled from England forever. The fact that Barry turns back to gambling - but without his previous success - suggests that he is unable to accept his new status in life (that of being respectably middle class) but rather attempts to gamble his way back to wealth, fails and falls into poverty. And now as he's missing a leg and is aging he can't resort to blackmailing and duels either. Which of course, is a fate he thoroughly deserves.

@richardgregory3684

@@Tomhito Uhh what? If you watched the film Barry ran up huge debts via mortgages and insurances to pay for his attempts to procure a Lordship for himself (because he was told that if Lady Lyndon died, her son would become the new Lord of the estate and inherit everything, leaving Barry penniless and at the mercy of Lord Bulligdon, whom Barry has spent years abusing). When Barry physically assaults Bullingdon in public his reputation is destroyed, and as pointed out "all the debts, mortagages and insurances were called upon in haste, and their amount was frightening". It is noted that Lady Lyndon's income is "hampered almost irreltrievably" to pay them off.

That's EXACTLY what I'm left wondering. It's an important point to know. A Guinea was about 1/4 oz of gold, so if the value of gold is relatively constant, then a Guinea today would be about $325 US, so 500 Guineas = $162,500. Not too shabby just to stay out of England.
