@kingcyclops40792 жыл бұрын
@@creepdimensions2405 A big reason of why alot of modern art/media sucks is that too many people write based on tropes in fictions. Good art draws from life experiences, when you use fiction as your reference you get a warped view on how the world works. Thus you get a pretty bland or just bad product. When you draw from reality you get a better understanding of the world and how to interpret it into your art. A show like Barry works because the characters are lifted from reality rather than “oh this character is like insert recognizable pop culture character here”. You can better write comedy and drama when you understand how to take real aspects of people and exaggerate or conceptualize those aspects into a character.

I honestly wasn't surprised and I'm a civilian, I just thought soldiers convinced themselves the life they ended was as they put "just another goat fucker to kill and nothing more, hesitate and they will kill you" so they turned the act of killing into something to celebrate so they didn't have to deal with the thoughts of "I just killed someone" until after their home and have the time to actually think about what they did. My grandpa kinda helped with this, he fought in vietnam and when he would talk about it which was VERY rare, he said when he was there the lives he ended were nothing but an enemy to kill and he didn't really think about it. Not until he was safe and back home did he start to think about the things he did, then it all really hit him and it hit hard. He's no longer with us, unfortunately, but I'm glad to say that near the end he made peace with his past

When Barry is engulfed in pure darkness once he kills the Chechnyan kid he trained to be the greatest among his friends and then when he kills him while consumed by pure rage. In a weird way, the appreciation I have for this show feels extremely similar to the appreciation I have for that Korean movie “Parasite”; in that what makes it so good is that it is simply a quintessential example of classic drama… just in a modern setting. It’s like both Parasite and Barry went back to a high school English classroom and went down the vocabulary list of literary elements you’d find in good fiction; irony, suspense, tragic flaws, satire, tragedy, comedy, internal/external conflict, etc.; and just turned it into a checklist to make sure they didn’t miss anything while writing their stories. There’s no horror, no sci fi, no fantasy, nothing. Just pure, unadulterated drama. And that’s what I think makes both Parasite and Barry so incredibly remarkable; the simple fact that both are nothing more than earnest and sincere attempts at telling a good drama.

17:54 I think the show IS engaging in a political commentary, it’s just doing it very subtly. Sally is indeed a crappy human being and one of the primary manifestations of her flaws and one which is specific to the example in the video at the above time code is the superficiality of her feminism. Sally indulges in the types feminist tropes which have been popularized in the media so we can infer that the character has, to some degree, a nominally feminist worldview. Yet the moment another woman, a woman Sally clearly sees as beneath her, attains success instead of being supportive, Sally unleashes a pathetic yaup of self-righteous rage. I think that the scene in which Sally loses it in the elevator is a commentary on the superficiality and animosity of feminism in the media.

I'm sold! I've been hearing a little about this show here and there from a couple buddies and various online podcasts or what have you, but getting the full gist here as to just how good it is managed to bring it into full focus. Bill Hader definitely has the acting chops, as do a lot of comedians who try out some dramatic work. Steve Carroll. Adam Sandler. Vince Vaughn. Robin Williams. Doing comedies must really be taxing work that just drains the life out of an actor, so moving to other shit ends up being a cake walk. Or at least that's a running theory of mine based on little to nothing. But fucking A, Barry it is. I'm going to pull it up on my HBO Max subscription right now because, boy, what a great service that is! So many things they have, it's really something.
