Barry Sanders retired 21 years ago. To this day nobody has done on the field what he has done. The moves he made have not been replicated. I can't think of another athlete, in any sport, that we can say that about. In a sports world where evolution of athletes happens so quickly that is probably the greatest legacy that Sanders left.

the only person i compare sanders to is pavel datsyuk. both did things (running/puck handling) that havent been seen before or after they retired. they both embarrassed professional players and made them look like they didnt belong on the field/rink

Hell, I just feel blessed to have been born in 1975... to have seen the greatest athletes/eras in ALL major sports: basketball (Jordan, Magic, Bird, Olajuwon, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron); football (Montana, Rice, Taylor, Peyton, Marino, Sanders [Barry], Sanders [Deion], Favre, Lewis, Woodson, Moss, Manning, Brady, and Reed [Ed]); boxing (Leonard, Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Tyson, Holyfield, Toney, Jones Jr., Whitaker, Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao); baseball (Jackson, Martinez, Rivera, Jeter, Johnson [Randy], Bonds), and even hockey (in the early 90's we donned LA Kings Jerseys because Gretzky was a WINNER, not because we knew fuck shit about the sport... we didn't). Don't even get me started on the music of the 1980's and 1990's. We Gen-Xer's were some spoiled ass motherfuckers, lmao!

irhungry66 if u think marshawn lynch is even in the same conversation with Barry sanders ur an idiot and need to pick up a new hobby
@irhungry668 жыл бұрын
Marshawn Lynch literally carried his team to 2 Super Bowls. Marshawn ran his best when his team needed him the most (THE PLAYOFFS) Barry took his team to what? An NFC Championship? Cool. But it's all personal preference. I like a running back to intimidate the other team with his brutal power house running game and 2 Super Bowl appearances than someone who rushed 1000+ yards in consecutive seasons but no Super Bowl achievements. Who did the Seahawks have on offense that could even compare to Marshawn? Russell Wilson? Russell needed Marshawn back there with him.
@mitchellkalina81918 жыл бұрын
irhungry66 hahaha r u serious? u just made it more clear that ur an idiot. those seahawks teams were well rounded, way better than any team Barry ever played on. the seahawks had awesome defenses and a good mix of run/pass on offense. defense shows in the playoffs and when u have a defense that good and r winning u can run the ball as much as possible without fear of losing the lead. the lions never had a defense in the same league as those seahawk teams

I'm a true die-hard Lions fans because even when the team went winless, I STILL was repping my Lions 🦁🦁🦁🏈🏈 because Barry had me hooked!!! 😂😂😂 I always hoped and wished that he had more offensive weapons around him but that never happened other than Herman Moore. Barry quit ball in his prime and only needed 1 more season to beat Walter Payton. I am sorry, but Barry Sanders was a better running back than Walter Peyton, and is the best and most impressive running back to ever play the game. He was the only player to ever get such a lousy football squad hope and brought SOOO many people to the game of football. There were just things Barry did on the field that no one else could ever do and probably will never do. Sometimes you have to look past numbers and just look at the skill and and what he brought to the table. He single-handedly made the Lions relevant and brought them to the Playoffs multiple years with GARBAGE Offenses and O-Lines.. Walter had the benefit of playing for some awesome Bears Offenses. Take nothing away from Payton, but Barry was just the more entertaining player to watch and his skillset was just unmatched.

Johnnie Doe Megatron hadn't practiced in like 3 years. His ankles are torn to shit. Couldn't run very fast. If you saw him play last season, he just gave up when a defender got to him. Didn't even try to break the tackle. He'd jut kinda jump into the defender and fall. As for Barry, yeah. He played during a rough time. Didn't like the direction the GM was going, so he retired right before training camp. You can blame that on the Lions organization. But you can't blame Megatron on them. And you can't blame their other greats on the organization either. It's literally 2 people that ended their careers early, and one of them was because of the GM.

@kevlarvoice34678 жыл бұрын
You mean Cliff Clavin? Yeah, as a mailman, I'm sure he could deliver, but downing beers at Cheers (or any bar, for that matter) wouldn't have helped Barry in the least ;-P

Kevlar Voice i originally thought you were trying to combine their names then i realized there is not a single letter from barrys name in there, you were just making fun of hin for spelling calvin wrong lol

Barry is pound for pound the best running back ever

How did the Lions not win something? They had Herman Moore and Brett Perriman and the greatest running back of all time and they lose to the Friggin Eagles in 96.. WTF
@notsauer8 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Silverman they had one of the worst O-Lines in history. Only increases Barry's GOATness. Also, Scott Mitchell was their best QB that decade...Lions for like 20 years sucked at drafting QBs
@jayk87568 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Silverman Barry was the only good one he probably could have one it offensively by himself his o line was garbage
@samuelrobert40837 жыл бұрын
The line wasn't garbage and in 1994 Scott Mitchel was the best QB apart from Steve Young. Herman Moore has multiple 1,000 yard season and soe does Brett Perriman. They also had Johnny Morton to replace Brett in that duo. Their line had Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover, how was it one of the worst in history. IF you want to know why the Lions lost just look at Barry's post season production compared to his regular season production. In 1994 week 14 vs. the Packers Barry had about 200 yards rushing, then vs. the same teams in the playoffs less than a month later he had -4. Barry is the Peyton Manning of RBs, great regular season,but chokes hard in the playoffs.
@YourGodsIcon7 жыл бұрын
The year before in the playoffs Barry had 169 yards against the Packers. If the other teams didn't completely commit to shutting Barry down, he would rip them apart and their season would be over.

As far as I remember they didn't run Barry near enough in that game.

The G.O.A.T and by a long ways and I am from Dallas . Hell even Emmitt has said that Barry is the greatest and that Barry would hold the record if he did not retire. No one that has ever played football has even come close to the skill level Barry Sanders had. I have never seen anyone in ANY sport be that much better than everyone else.
@Bryanseas7 жыл бұрын
smith had a great o line, and a great troy aikman to help take the pressure off the run when they hand it off. barry retired 10 years, horrible line and everyone focused on him cuz the passing game was mediocre. plus it was stats vs plain fascinating skill and taleng

My brother, who has passed, and I saw the Lions vs. Minnesota at the Silverdome one time. The Lions were getting pounded the whole game - by the start of the 4th, the game was 20-3 Minnesota. Fans were leaving, taking markers to signs that said Barry and making the sign read "F**K Barry!" - things looked very grim. My brother was a major Barry fan, so we stayed in our seats. We watched Barry bring the game back up to 17-20 and with only a few minutes left, broke an epic 20to25 yrd TD run up the middle after multiple broken tackles and the Lions won. I'll never forget that day. Was a great day with my brother. Barry was amazing in many ways.

"Now you see me" Lol Barry's the man. His humble attitude really just made him look even better. The comment about ball-bearings in his ankles is the best way to describe him. He's a super-human, and nobody has ever been able to think, react, and cut like Barry could. The "Ali" of football. It's almost as if these once-in-a-generation athletes can slow down time around them.

Had the pleasure of seeing him in person a few times in my youth. The most electric RB in history of the game, and easily arguable the best RB ever. A Barry run of 3 yards could be an awesome display of athletics that many RBs could only pull off once a year. Seriously slippery!

Most GREAT RB's can attribute their success to an incredible O-line. Well, Detroit's O-line had BARRY SANDERS!

I have been a Seahawks fan since Barry was playing and in my mind I believe that Barry is the GOAT! He was pretty much the whole Lions team back then. My brother was a big Barry fan so I watched the games with him and it seemed like Barry was the only person the defenses had to worry about. I played RB in Highschool and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who wanted to be like Barry Sanders when I grew up. I was a Seahawks fan! Go Hawks!

The man walked away on HIS terms. With class and humility. Nobody. Nobody ran the ball like this man. Speed, agility, balance, power, and humility! If you want to know how good he really was, watch his "A Football Life." Didn't even play running back until his senior year of high school. 1 year as a college running back. And wait until you hear what Barry Switzer has to say about him as OK played OK State and Sanders was sitting behind Thurman Thomas at OK St. Best running back in NFL history. No doubt about it.

My two favourite players to watch, Barry Sanders #1 Running Back, the anticipation of what he'd do with a hand-off, and Deion Sanders #1 Cornerback, the anticipation of what he'd do with an interception. They were the Best of the Best.
