I bought a RME baby face (the original one) ten years ago for $800 and I am still using it and they are still making drivers for it even with the interface been retired for more than 5 years… I don’t think I will ever buy anything but RME interfaces. It has everything their bigger siblings have but in a compact form appropriate for a small home studio.

I bought an RME Fireface in 2010 for around 1500 EURO. Rock solid. So so reliable (on windows at least). The USB connection broke busted about 3 years ago so I've been using the firewire interface since. The great thing is that I have learnt so much through using this device year after year after year. Like the look of the RME ADI-2 for the next decade....

Returned my ADI-2 DAC FS. Hyped top end and harsh midrange. Harmonic coloration is across all of the spectrum. Most colored "neutral" device I ever heard. Much harsher than Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 I could not EQ out that harshness even with their 7 band EQ without losing clarity. This had much darker AK4493 chip in it. Maybe ESS chip is better for this unit, but people say otherwise. RME markets "uncolored" sound, but that is a false claim. It is very colored and to me not enjoyable. Sound stage is also pulled back by about 2 feet (auditory) from centerpoint of speakers. Like I am further away. Boosting 200hz and midrange didnt change that much. Many people report the same. Far from best sounding device, but transients are crazy snappy. For better or for worse. Latency is amazing. Clock is very stable. I had HDSPe Raydat as well, it was more natural, but sound stage was about a foot and odd inches back as well. No EQ in their Total FX though. Definitely colors sound too. Makes you lose low end. While ADI-2 DAC FS has very strong bass, but rather unnaturally snappy. Doesnt play well with Yamaha MSP5 speakers. Sounds like you want to increase boominess of bass echo, or reduce transient spike. Your mileage may vary May sound great to you, doesn't sound great to me. Ears hurt from it after 30 mins

This is spot on. I’m in the process of switching from UAD to RME, really excited about the stability and all the infinite routing options. Even on Mac UAD has really not been reliable for me. After doing a massive experimental live project this past fall I couldn’t handle the stress and decided to make the switch. Thank you for all your insights, definitely the best I’ve seen! PS - totally agree about the terminology around syncing things, I really appreciate that observation.

I recently replaced two Firetudio Project interfaces (they were pro when released) with a TASCAM 16x08. Boy was I surprised! I absolutely love the TASCAM interface, it has built-in DSP (compressor, EQ) per channel and the preamps/converters are REALLY supreme, I mean no noise floor whatsoever and a lot of gain per channel (it was a huge upgrade for me). You DON'T need anything super high tier for the job to be honest. Barry, get your hands on one (300 Euro in Europe which is a steal) and review it. You'll see how great they are for the price.

While I probably won’t be able to hear the difference from - say - a MOTU 8M to a RME UFX III without spending a lot of time with the latter, I got to say this: After upgrading from a rather low end interface to MOTU, I certainly DID hear a quite noticeable jump in that certain directness in tone. Something that I didn’t expect for sure. But it wasn’t just me imagining things. That’s what I know now.

Great video Barry! I opted for the Tascam Mixcast 4 and haven't looked back. It's the best bang for the buck IMHO. The onboard recording paid for itself as my wireless company continued to bill me after I cancelled service. This was recorded and played back to the recovery company and it totally shut 'em down. The preamps are nutty good too! The only issues I've had is that it won't turn off every 50 or so uses so I have to remove the PS to get it to do so.

Anything from the Focusrite Red Series, I personally love the Red 16A, next would be Lynx Aurora LN, Avid MTRX, RME (Any Really), MOTU's are great, but haven't been refreshed in 5 or more years, my Avid Carbon is outstanding it you work in Protools, of course Apogee, so many........

Burl is not only for mastering. The B80 Mothership is expandable to 80 channels in the same unit. Burl is also modular and the entry price is much more modest with an 8 in 8 out system. Burl was designed to be high end that is not "impossible forever," as you say. Burl is certainly not cheap, even for an 8 in 8 out. But the expandability offets entry price in a substantial way. Burl's audio quality is just in another league. I have to thank you for at least mentioned Burl. It's well known in high-end circles but not so much in the mid-range.

My friend.....thanks so much for this video. I am 60 years old and putting together my 3rd home studio. My Focusrite Clarett 8 pre is maxed out of ports and my Sweetwater Rep was suggesting the Apollo 6 or 8 because they have a promotion and you get a free $1200 Townsend L22 mic. My focusrite sounds fine and instead of buying the Apollo 8 I picked up a used Clarett 8 pre for $500 and using ADAT have my extra 8 channels. The $2000 plus I am saving is going towards a pair of Focal or Adams speakers. I have a home project studio so can't justify the UAD prices. I think the upgrade from my cheap low end $300 pair of JBLs will give me way more bang for the buck then the UAD converters. Plus buying a brand new fully loaded Apple Macbook pro or max with 64 Gb memory, 4 TB SSD drive etc. That computer will be so powerful I don't see the need for DSPs in the interface. I sure hope I am making the right choice because I am too old to be making mistakes when buying gear. Thanks for a great channel. You have so much knowledge & wisdom.

I also use a Rupert Neve Designs Pre/compressor, will I be able to bypass the built in mic pre on the RME UCX2 or will those pre’s be clean enough not to effect the sound quality. Yesterday I listened to Burl and I am smitten. I’d like to hear more from you on the Motherboard 16 as a replacement for my Apollo Mk2 Quad (or maybe in conjunction with to be able to use some of the UAD features). I started out looking for better mic preamps, and I’d rather not have to go through the same exercise in 5 years. The Burl approach seems like a good match for the Royer R121 matched pair that I have on order, to keep that “live” feeling throughout the tracking process.

@@bigdap100 I agree the RME is a great interface. I've never been around any of those super interfaces he talks about other than in the early 80's I was lucky enough to be in a studio that had a Harrison console. And that has always been the bench mark for me. It's a beautiful sound. Although I could afford a Harrison console, I was able to get a RME Fireface UFX. I have used it for sometime and love it. I did purchase a couple of the Apollo X8. Plus I'm using ADAT out of each one for 32 to 48 channels. While some of the UA plugins are really great, the mic-pre's are not close to RME's in my opinion. I still have my RME and looking at going back to it full time. Also the RME TotalMix is second to none. Barry Johns, thank you sir for another great video and eye opening information. Barry, just wanted to let you know that I enjoy and appreciate your videos. I enjoy that you don't tell as much as explain. After working the last 40 years give or take a day I am getting back into my passion of writing and recording with the sole expectation of having something that I enjoy listening to. I have reconnected with a friend from high school who is still and excellent drummer and since I am the live mix engineer for Head East (8 years on now) the guys have committed to helping me with any additional vocals/guitars/keys/bass guitar that I may have a need for. I think that I have decided that I will put maybe not a high-end, but a high-endish audio interface RME/Focusrite for acoustic as well as vocals and then move to a mid-level Focusrite Clarett+ 8 Pre for additional drum tracks. Keeping the kick/snare/hat through the RME and the kit through the Clarett+. I would like to find a good/reasonably good $1,000 range vocal preamp. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I am not going to be using anything fancy for a vocal mic. Given my voice a Rode NT2A is plenty good. Computer wise I have ordered a M1 Macbook Pro 14" with a 10 core CPU/16 core GPU and 32 gig of memory and 1TB. I have two external thunderbolt 4 drives 2 TB each. For a little home studio, not letting anyone else in to record except my son-in-law...it should be fine. I am using Cubase Pro 12 which is now M1 certified. Keep up the good work and I will let you know if you stray too far afield. Bill

Sup Barry, my interface has all of the important attributes that you mentioned in your video. I can’t express how important stable drivers are, you are so correct! Here’s one thing I also found out about a super quality interface. When you look online for clocking/conversation mods and if there aren’t any, I think your moving in the correct direction. That’s what I did when making my decision for my current interface. Same goes for mic preamp mods on these interfaces. Go with the one that’s good out of the box. They have all sorts of mods for my go to favorite, UADApollo interface, so that tells me it has it’s shortcomings, but I love it’s color shading abilities. That damn Waves Digigrid’s IOS Server has killer mic pre’s and the clocking on this thing just sounds awesome! But it’s not my go to. If I want “more” or “cleaner” it’s my guy! But if I’m after a tone/color, UAD. Barry I do agree you get what you pay for. I was shocked in the sounds coming from each interface, which I wasn’t expecting but the more expensive one sounds better. So I’ll usually ask what unit they want to track with? Most like the UAD, some will occasionally ask for the Waves, and alot will say, “use what you used last time”. Crazy right?

I'm on an Apollo x8p with Windows 10. It had some issues early on, but I sent it back to UA and it's been rock solid since. I've had issues in the past, but I tend to blame them on Thunderbolt support in Windows being bad (until tb3) rather than UA or other interfaces which had issues. I do end up running a patchbay, with a variety of analog preamps, into the Apollo via db25. (Why an x8p when I run outboard pres? I got a crazy deal on it from a studio that had 3 and was downgrading to 1). I am on a 9th gen i9 and I don't actually have any need for DSP, even at 96k, other than liking a few UAD plugins which require it. I'm expecting to be good with this setup for years to come.

To be clear, I'm talking about the x8p as an interface. I don't really care for the UA pres. I would've been better off with an x8 or x16 but I got the x8p for less than half the cost of an x8.

i am not in the market for a top end interface yet. My trusty Behringer umc is as stable as anything. But i am starting to look at mic pres and what they can do for me. I am not working at a level where i can hear subtle improvements here and there yet. But its the perspective angle i look at. What stunning gear did the beatles use to do 4 tracks? By todays standard, very basic. And then what is your audience going to be listening on? MP3 players! I agree drivers are very important, I remember a time when drivers were the pits, literally crap. But looking back over the last 5 yrs , it hasnt been an issue for me. I do most of my work in the box, just an interface and my PC. I quite love the freedom from looking for a patch or knob to turn. Even my software is pretty minimalist. The bling just gets in the way. I guess i watch stuff like this to see what I am missing and how i can do better. The single greatest improvement in PCs has been the arrival of SSDs, big ones. Cubase was a total arsehole on HDD but to my surprise, the new version is great on SSDs. Doesnt mean I am going back anytime soon, lol. Once bitten twice shy babe. And thats the issue, when your spending the big bucks, are you going to get a return on that money? Are you good enough to hear an improvement?

My two cents on this: {A} I still have a Big Ben and it's great but if you're starting out with a reasonably large budget, you should know that having an external clock is not necessary until you have multiple conversion devices. So... (In my case) I have an Aurora, an old Apogee Rosetta, and an Avid HD Omni. I need the Big Ben to sync everything but you probably don't. If you just have one conversion device (Like if I just had the Aurora) the Big Ben is a waste of money. {B} As an owner of "Pretty Good" converters I want to make it clear that the difference is super small. If I had to give it a value, I'd say 3% to 5%. That's it. A great performance is still the silver bullet for a great recording. Thanks for the awesome video, Barry.

I have a mobile rig that comes and goes as well as two dedicated synth/sampling computers and blah and this other blah, blah. The Big Ben is really flexible and superior in my case. My original point was to protect people from the financial Kaiju that is my studio (I left some things out). Also... Yes. The Omni is great. I would not still be using Avid Hardware if it didn't exist. Have a great remainder of your week, Barry.

Also if you wanted to buy one of these new from Sweetwater or Guitar center you would plug it in only to find out you could not use it. Then you would have to deal with returning an item that's not considered to be returnable at these retail outlets due to having included software! I'm not saying they shouldn't sell this, I'm simply saying they should tell people that it doesn't work on current OSX and inform the retail outlets. I had to learn the hard way unfortunately.

UA have said they are just not going to bother making the drivers for their FW hardware that people paid good money for to run their expensive plug ins. I got an expansion TB3 card for my Apollo and the system report on my M1, "saw" the FW Satellite, but UA wants me to spend even more money to buy a new TB Satellite in order to do what I was already doing with my FW Satellite. So I sold the FW Satellite and UA will never see another cent from me. RME has made drivers for their FW devices, so its not a hardware issue.

I am starting out kind of old school (where mixing consoles are concerned). I have the Mackie 32.8 analog console with the meter bridge. My interface is just a UAD Volt 276. Would it be advisable to pick up an Antelope Audio Orion 32 and gamble with support, or is there a 32 channel equivalent (Madie or Dante) RME that is at least around the same price? I still have a tower full of rack gear from the Windows XP days (including TC Electronic Finalizer 96k, M one XL, Antares Mic modeler, Roland SRV-3030, Behringer patch bay, Monster 3000 Power conditioner, Blue Max Compressor, Blue Tube mic pre and even an old Digi 001, Delta 1010 LT sound card and some Dolby S tape decks and a Harmon-Kardon CD-R 20. I may sell some of the outdated stuff to someone who collects older gear to make room. But, is it doable to make what I have create solid mixes? I was even thinking of getting a 16 or 32 channel HUI mixer to run Cubase 12 Pro if the Mackie is a problem.

I'm presently using the Audient ID14 mkii Audio interface. It has great preamps that I love. I'm not a fan of analogue gears because I believe their time is gone and there are great plugins that can do the job rather than waste money on analogue gears. Great engineers are now mixing totally in the box and mastering using plugins. So I'm looking for a 2 channel interface that has the balance of great mic preamp and prestine mastering grade D/A and A/D converters. Do you think I will get any additional benefit upgrading to a Prism Lyra 2 Audio interface as against using the Audient ID14 mkii

@@kos.studio9304 every apple computer is an AVB device, you can connect the carbon directly to the Mac or make it work with an AVB switch if you have multiple AVB devices. The Focusrite Rednet can be connected via TB (mac only) HD Link and Dante, you need to install Dante Virtual Souncard so that you computer works like a Dante device, in this case the latency is not very usable. Or you can install a Focusrite PCIe Dante card and have much lower latency.
