"Overrated and a legend at the same time." That sums up Kobe perfectly. Definitely a legend, but some people want to put him near (or even above) MJ, which is insane to me. There seems to be a certain level of idolization that causes people to rank him higher than they should. The tragedy of his early death probably feeds into that even further.
@jamesburgess2k
@jamesburgess2k 2 жыл бұрын
Nah, his death has little to do with that, Kobe was well overhyped during his career. After he won back to back without Shaq, people constantly considered him #2. LeBron had to win 4 fucking MVPs and God tier finals performances for people to realize that Kobe just wasn't on that exact level of greatness as him and MJ. He figuratively took the torch from MJ after he retired for many people, so he was seen as the 2nd iteration of MJ, even though he never quite lived up to that height (honestly who could?).

One of the big reasons Dr. J's stats dropped is because he was playing with a prime Moses and Maurice Cheeks. On any given night, he would do whatever the team needed to win. For example, in Game 1 of the finals vs the Lakers, he put up ridiculous number of 20 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 blocks and two steals. That's an incredible stat line and showed what he was capable of. If he was on a weaker team, he would have scored way more. Everyone's stats go down when they play along better players. The Dream Team is a great example, where Barkley led the team with 18 ppg.

I want to end the KG in San Antonio debate. KG wouldn't have won nearly as many as Duncan because he was a shitty teammate. The reason the Spurs were contenders for 20 seasons was because Duncan was willing to accept a smaller role in favor of getting wins and letting teammates flourish
@vaclevsta
@vaclevsta 2 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Duncan was a Top 10 All time player who had hall of fame teammates and one of the best coaches of the modern era. KG was a top 30 or so all time player who had Anthony Peeler and Wally Szczerbiak. I agree that KG probably wins fewer than 5 titles if he's in Duncan's shoes, but Duncan does not win a single ring in Minnesota. Nobody in NBA history could have won with those teams.
@vaclevsta
@vaclevsta 2 жыл бұрын
@Fries Duncan's help is definitely overstated, his individual brilliance was by far the biggest factor in all of their titles except 2014. That being said, it's not even an argument that he was in a better situation than KG in Minnesota, it would be crazy to suggest otherwise.

Also Dr. J's numbers dipped in 77-79 because he was playing with another big time scorer George McGinnis. He was absolutely snubbed from 1st Team all defense many years in his time in ABA and some All-Defensive selections in the NBA (maybe a couple more 1st teams but mostly 2nd teams) 3 straight MVPs, another one later on. 2x Finals MVP. 3x Scoring Champion, and to this day one of the best wing defenders of all time. 3/6 Finals Record (50%) He for me is a top 5 player as he dominated both leagues and could do everything.

I love doctor j, but top 5? Who are u even replacing him with in the top 10? Best I can do is top 15, literally all of the top 10 guys have more rings, more accolades, and better numbers. Dr j is still great tho
@splitsecond8356
@splitsecond8356 2 жыл бұрын
@@TransparentEclipse, better than Bird. People like to say the ABA was trash, but then you look at the teams and players and it was literally stealing the best talents. There's interviews and player statements on this as well. But Dr. J has the same amount of rings and Finals MVPs as Bird. However Dr. J was the much better playoff performer. The much better defender. And I would argue scorer as Dr. J has a higher career ppg average, and more scoring titles. He also has over 30,000+ points which is impressive. And on top of this, Dr. J also has 3 straight MVPs and then another one in '81. There's no argument for Bird over Dr. J, even impact wise. I'd even argue he's better than Kareem since Kareem got carried by Magic and Worthy for many rings. And Dr. J was the much better Finals performer as his best Finals he averaged almost 38pts, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and his defensive stats like Kareem were not recorded, though his regular season that year defensively was great. Kareem in his best Finals series, had less than 27pts, 18 rebounds, and 2 assists. Peak wise, Dr. J was better and he has a stacked resume. To act like he's top 15 is absurd.

@@splitsecond8356 ok, I’m not even gonna criticize ur take, ur entitled to ur opinion, and I respect it. I would be curious tho what ur top 10 players of all time list is? Most ppl have kareem at minimum a top 5 player all time, so where do u have dr j, at 4 or 3 or somewhere? When u said top 5 I assumed 5 but if u think he’s better than kareem it’s higher no? Would be super curious to see ur top 10 list, I promise I won’t judge it, I’m just genuinely interested, since it seems it’s radically different from most standard lists. @@TransparentEclipse, I'll say this and then I'll give you my ranking with some brief explanations to not take up too much of your time. So, in boxing (for the most part) they rank fighters based off of level of competition. Ali is looked at as one of, if not the best because he played in and dominated the strongest Heavyweight era of all time, really only being rivaled by the 90s. Now boxing is an individual sport of course, by I personally use that as my main metric along with players being the 1st option, 2nd option, etc. Those are my two biggest factors because it really does show how good a player is. It also means more if you dominated in a stronger era than a weaker era. But here's my top 10... In order: Jordan, Kobe, Dr. J, Hakeem, Duncan, Bird, Magic, Shaq, Kareem, and Lebron. No Wilt and Russell because when some of their best players like Dolph Schayes went to the hall of fame by averaging 16 points on his best season and being an ok facilitator, it really shows how bad that era was. 10, Lebron. Only started to win a weak Eastern Conference, when he joined 2 other Hall of Famers. All again in a very weak East. Then in Cleveland I still think it was a weak East, but he at least played good in the Finals so I don't hold too much against him there. Against the Heat in 2020, the Heat were missing 2 out of there top 3 best players for a good chunk of that series, and Jimmy outplayed Lebron for most of that series. I don't really hold Lebron high for the most part because of the context around his achievements, but his Finals appearances in Cleveland are impressive. So Kareem at 9 because the 70s were bad till 76-77 in the NBA, the ABA had much better talent, with the only exception being Bob Macadoo who was actually really good. Kareem missed the playoffs twice in 75 and 76, and played a lot worse in the Finals and Playoffs than his regular season. When he got Magic he then started making the playoffs, and he Magic was playing a lot better. So Kareem played in a weak era for most of his career, and only started winning till he he became a 2nd option. Career wise, his resume is really good, however, if we only look at one's career than Bob Cousy is bordering top 20 because of his resume, which isn't at all the case. At 8 I have Shaq. Shaq played in the 2000s West during his prime, and that was the strongest West even to this day. Though Shaq didn't spend a ton of time there. 3 of the best Finals performances of all-time, unlike Kareem. He also was the best player on at least 2 of those championship runs. Was great on every level besides shooting. Shaq is actually better than Kareem I would say, maybe not total success wise, but I've already been over why that metric can be overblown. 7 would then be Magic. Magic lead the Lakers to many championships, was decent on the defensive end but not great. Was at least a good scorer, and arguably the best facilitator. Besides in '84, he was great in the playoffs and in the Finals. I personally think though Magic and Shaq are interchangeable. 6 I would have Bird. Bird played in the East which was the strongest Eastern conference even to this day, and was much harder to make it out of the playoffs than what the West was. Bird had less success than Magic, but wasn't that far off. I do think he is overrated in the playoffs, however, he was always great in the Finals. As well as the regular season. The better defender and scorer than Magic. And was always the first option. 5 is Duncan. Duncan could be higher, however, his peak wasn't very long and wasn't as insane as some of the players peaks that is later on the list. I think Duncan is the 2nd best defender of all time, and was good in every other category. Played in the strongest west, also dominated in it but much longer than Shaq. 4, I have Hakeem. Unlike everyone I've mentioned so far, besides maybe Bird with all the 80s Small Forwards, Hakeem dominated in the 2nd best Western conference, I group the 00s and 10s together, as well as the strongest era of big man of all time. You had Robinson, Shaq, Ewing, Mourning, Mutumbo, Daugherty, etc. All with no official All-stars on his team till after he started winning championships. As well as pre 90s with Sampson but that was very short. Hakeem did a lot with much less than what Duncan had, Bird had, Magic had, etc. And I would argue is the greatest defender of all time. He played a lot better in the Finals and playoffs than what he did in the regular season which is very rare. He also statistically had the hardest playoff/championship run of all time in '95 and averaged 33pts, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2blks, and 2stls. He was absolutely crazy one of the best Finals performances ever. Could be higher, however, it's hard to not ignore the fact that he did not play in the strongest West of all time. 3 is Dr. J. He played his best years in the ABA where he was a top tier defender and scorer. He won 3 scoring titles, 1 All-Defensive 1st team, however, when you look at the stats and impact Dr. J should've won it at least 5 more times for first team. Dr. J also played well in all forms of the game as I explained earlier. And in the NBA should've won another chip in '77 however, his team was playing a lot of selfish ball which cost them the chip. Should've won maybe another 1st team all-defensive selection in 77 and potentially 78. But 79 onwards should be more like 2nd team and lower. And Dr. J ended his career in the 80s east which is the strongest east period. 2, Kobe. Same thing as Duncan however had a longer and better prime. Was inefficient, however all those stats can be attributed to era where the pace was slower and teams as a whole had lower efficiencies. Kobe was a great scorer, and defender. Never really had a great Finals MVP though. So you can hold that to him. And I do think Kobe could be ranked lower, I won't only just look at the positives for Kobe. Kobe did also play in the strongest West as well, so there's that to consider too. 1. Jordan, pretty much Bird on absolute steroids. The best scorer of all time, averaging the highest career ppg, being top 5 in career points, and having the most scoring titles of all-time. But was also a top tier defender. Also played in the strongest East 80s - 90s and dominated. His finals competition was really good unlike this weird rising opinion that it was bad, kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJiQlWyMd9p1rKs

@@TransparentEclipse, sorry that comment was so long, I tried to make it as brief as possible. Included brief explanations too, so that you can at least attempt to understand my thought process. Though I do have more reasonings for placements, just didn't want to take up too much of your time. You did mention "most people" a bit in your comment, I don't really care about what a popular opinion is for rankings, because it's just an appeal to popularity. Not saying that's the case every time, but I avoid saying because of that fact. I also wanted to mention, I also factor in achievements as well in my metric system it's just not number 1 like how most people have it. I also factor in performances and play throughout the whole game, as well as offensive and defensive abilities. So don't just think I'm talking about era/competition and one's option choice on the team (1st option, 2nd option, etc.)

@@veloxacre5265 Those are incredible resumes, but they still don't stack up to the likes of MJ and LeBron, who each have more Finals MVP's and regular season MVP's than those 2, more all NBA appearances, and better counting stats/efficiency across the board. I agree with positions 3 through 8, but MJ and Lebron really have separated themselves and stand alone at 1 and 2. It's very hard to argue (convincingly) for anyone other than them in the top 2 spots. But I could see 3 through 8 being almost interchangeable

He was never that invested in that take IMO. I think his stance was that they're both great players, a case can be made for either, and the most annoying trend in NBA discussion is people who unfairly shit on LeBron. Honestly, I think starting with that premise is more important than who you ultimately pick between the two.

Great video, only really disagree with the second pick. Bill Russell is definitely over KD i my book, he's a Mount Rushmoure player(4th behind MJ, Lebron and Kareem in that order) i think they are the only 4 who have a strong argument for being the GOAT.
@SomeRandomBlockhead
@SomeRandomBlockhead 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree but def respect the opinion. I see Russell in a similar light to Brady (admittedly I respect Russell more than Brady), they both won a crap-load of titles on stacked teams where it wasn’t up to them to win, as much as it was up to them to not screw the pooch. Russell is a legit atg, but i don’t think he’d be as remembered if he didn’t play for the celtics for the time that he did, as he likely doesn’t win the absurd amount of rings he did on another team (tbf KD doesn’t win his 2 rings if he didn’t join the Ws, so 6 of 1 i guess). Idk but i think KD, individually, is a better player, scorer, and superstar than Russell ever was, though that may just be recency bias
