I had a good friend when I was entering my college years. He was an audiophile, and a radio professional. He taught me that if I wanted to learn what great production sounded like, to train my ears with Alan Parsons and ELO. To this day, The Alan Parsons Project is my reference point for what my ears need to hear in order to calibrate before working on any music production.

Yeah, I never heard it. The Animals remix project of a few years ago sounds great, as does the WYWH one in a similar vain. The Animals one in particular brings the Gilmour vocals on "pigs" chorus out of being buried in the mix. I think carping about other people messing with your work is a bit silly, since the new remixes don't delete the original masters.

Pyramid was the first APP album I ever listened to. The fusion of rock and classical themes (especially on In the Lap of the Gods track) blew my mind. I was living in France at the time and a couple of guys I knew played it and I was hooked. A month later I was back in the UK and immediately bought past albums and what was their latest at that time, Eve. Pyramid and Turn of a Friendly Card have always been my favourite. I felt the Alan Parsons Project never got the recognition in the UK (from the music press or radio) that they received in Europe and other parts of the world. One would sometimes hear one of the instrumental tracks on TV documentaries but it wasn't until Sirius and Eye in the Sky that UK audiences seemed to take note.

No artist should ever care about legacy. They dont exist for audiences. Got news for you, ANY rocker you ever hear has a pretty arsed sized ego. It comes with the territory. But I couldnt be arsed either, however, the fact is that this was very likely done to separate his lyrics from the sale of Pink Floyds catalogue. And I don't blame him for not liking the idea of "us .....and them' being used to sell beer or fast food. Or what is even worse that i've been hearing in department stores, which is once the rights are bought, the corporation just gets some hack to sing and re record it, and no longer pays ANY royalties.

APP best represents a form of music all of its own. What is it precisely? In many ways it is pop music, classical music and progressive rock music at its most refined all rolled into an incredibly well produced entity. A form of music that should please just about everyone, but actually pleased surprisingly few. Music critics absolutely hated APP with an unbridled passion and did their best to simply ignore them. I had all of APPs albums, but I was the only one out of all my mates that had so much as one.

Eh, I dunno. I've got both versions, and I gotta say that to me, the original release feels incomplete. While I do enjoy hearing the into to "A Dream Within A Dream" from the slow, quiet build, I think Orson Welles' narration complements the piece rather than distracting from it; and the guitar solo added to "The Raven" is exactly what the song had needed from 1975-1987.

Pyramid and Turn of a Friendly Card are my favorites, but there are gems on every album, including the post-Project works of both. OF Alan's solo work, my faviorite is the Time Machine, closely followed by On Air. I am genuinely sorry that Waters had a clearly harsh childhood. And am happy that he was able to profit from it by creating The Wall. He's a gifted lyricist. But the anger does not seem to go away. Waters explained doing Dark Side Redux plainly enough. He wanted to do it from a now old man's perspective, what not to understand. It's not rocket science. Personally, I think he did a good job and production and engineering are top quality, it's the best sounding album. There was/is no underlying stab in the back to the rest of the band, it's a completely different album, it shouldn't be compared to the brilliant original, it's a completely different animal. Love Alan Parsons Project and he was a great producer and engineer but Eric Woolfson was the musical brains of the project.

Waters wanted to do a new perspective from an older wiser perspective, I fully get it. And what did he do? Just added mumbling rambling dialogue to established songs, sort of like a rapper going over samples, also he removed the great instrumentals. I could see how this might work if you are very familiar with the original, elsewise it doesn't stand on its own. End result is as some clever person put it in the comments here ...DSOTM ReFux-Up.
@stuartraybould2574
@stuartraybould2574 Ай бұрын
@@ndogg20 You're still comparing it to the original, stripping away the instrumental sections, it's not that album, it's a different animal with it's own instruments, organ, cello, a separate entity, while influenced by it. Don't compare, treat as individual, then decide. You might not like it, that's a personal thing but for goodness sake, it's not Dark Side 1973. It's a Roger Waters album 2023 and not that far removed from Is this the World We really want? If you don't like it, fine but don't like it because you hate the music, not because it's not Dark Side 1973 Pink Floyd. It's not trying to be.

I like Alan. He seems to be fairly introverted (completely open yet always guarded) but his work is brilliant. If I interviewed him, I'd ask him how come the best songs on the TAPP albums were never released as singles and remain underrated deep cuts to this day. For example, how about the Clare Torry-sung "Don't Hold Back" which is the best song on the Eve album, or "You're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned" which I think is the greatest song they ever did?

I don't agree about Don't Hold Back but I do see how that could've potentially worked as a single. Then again, Lucifer and Damned If I Do were both hit singles so the Eve album did well regardless. You're Gonna Get Your Fingers Burned really sounds like it should have been a single in the US. It's unusual for the band but has one of the most incredible guitar solos I've ever heard (RIP Ian) and was a regular fixture of the 90s live line-up.

Great interview Barry. Tales is one of my top 10 albums. I love everything about that album and I am grateful that the original mix was released. I wasn’t a huge fan of the mix released when CDs first hit the market.

Re: Roger Waters 'Dark Side of the Moon' Redux. In a parallel universe, the surviving members of Pink Floyd announce in 2022 concerts to celebrate 50th years of Dark side of the Moon(1973) , Wish You Were Here(1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979).

I have gone back to Vulture Culture in the last few years and I really love the album. I liked it at the time. I go back to all the mid 80s strong production albums and it got so hard in a changing world that the production was not as much of a show piece.

Brilliant interview - really enjoyed it. Alan Parsons always seems so modest about his considerable achievements. His lack of commentary on Mr. Waters speaks volumes.

Love watching you talk to people you admire and adore to hear their opinions and inputs, any chance Roger Daltrey or Pete Townshend to be in a feature video? Id love to hear that

I remember as a teen when Eye in the sky came out, I loved it, and the next album I could afford to purchase was Tales of Mystery and Imagination - and I still love it today. Pyramid was great, but at the time Vulture Culture was released I had lost interest - nonetheless I remain very positive about the fact that you could very well listen to punk and APP or to reggae and prog in the same breath! :)

Alan's quad mix is still the best mix of dark side of the moon. And I think that WATERS is just trolling everyone with that redux re-make....
