I grew up during the time when Phil Collins was only known as the drummer and backing vocalist in my favourite band. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil stepped up as lead singer my friends and I were all rooting for him, (and the band), to continue with what I still think of as ground-breaking work. How anyone could take offence at one of the best drummers, singers, brilliant arranger/contributor, talented song writer and all-round good guy, is beyond me.

Might be that for a while he was absolutely everywhere and therefore became an easy target. I can see that opinions about him and his music are much more positive now than in 1992. He was always a great singer and a great drummer. During a few years (76-84 I would say his peak) he was truly awesome, one of a kind. I hope he comes here once in a while and read how much people love him.

Phil has been a musical hero of mine for most of my life. The scope of his work and talent is astonishing, balanced by his sincerity and genuine joy in performing and collaborating with others. I always appreciated how he often identifies himself as a drummer first (even in this clip here). I was blown away by the power of his drumming with Brand X; projects like that and his big band work were fascinating - he accomplished so much more as a creative force than the box he was placed in by the success of his mainstream work. Then when I did my first live shows with a blues band at 16, the guitar player played me Moroccan Roll from Brand X and that was all she wrote... I love this dude and have done for many years. Genesis saved me from a shitty teenage time and through Phil's drumming I was introduced to jazz with his ferociously funky drumming in Brand X. I saw Genesis many times back in the day and Phil solo on his very first solo tour at what was then the Hammersmith Odeon - in the nosebleed seats! Another concert he pushed security guards out the way outside the Royal Albert Hall to walk to me and my then girlfriend to say hello and sign my tour jacket! I was speechless, gob smacked. Lovely fella, truly. I was smitten! So this you may feel this is all leading to something? It is. As an audience loving gent and a consummate pro I didn't understand why he made what seemed little or no effort to get his voice back to something like it used to be in the early days, on Genesis' final tour. I understand why he couldn't drum so have no questions there, but surely efforts could have been made to better the voice through voice work and training. It just seemed like he didn't care which made me rather sad and confused.

Back then, we only had so many things to complain about! No one I knew ever "hated" Phil. Music changed and it became a bit tame as music took on a harder edge. Luckily the internet gives us the opportunity now, to learn about what was really happening in the studio in those crossover years after the original Genesis faded out. As it turns out, Phil (and Peter Gabriel "don't play the cymbals") had a pretty major impact on the pop music that was being made in the 80's. Much respect.

I’m shocked how old and ministerial Phil looks at just 63 yrs old here. He did a concert a couple of years ago sitting down and he looked every inch a frail Dickensian geriatric character at only 70 yrs old. Despite his brilliant iconic songs and career success I can’t help but feel his image lets him down at times. A far cry from the star who in the mid/late 80s occasionally lit up episodes of Miami Vice with his cocky flamboyant characters (once a successful child actor)

I don't think most people even remember that perspective in the late eighties, early nineties, when it seemed Phil Collins was everywhere. I remember that, and it seemed that no matter what he did, it became a number one hit. As well as he was doing so many other musical activities. There apparently is some people that have carried that disdain they developed then, over the decades. And now they are just dealing with that, but it doesn't really matter in the wider context, because most people now only remember what they like about Phil and whatever musical things he did. I like him the most as a drummer. I started with the live abacab album, but since got more into earlier genesis and brand X. Although at the time I did like some of the pop songs he and genesis would do by the middle to late eighties, I generally just checked out on it, though I didn't have any hate. I loved the movies he was in, and kind of wish he did more.

Phil was massive in the 80's, when the 90's kicked in, things changed, people were looking for something new, but Phil was still churning out the massive tunes, they just didn't sit well with the likes of The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. People in the UK like to move on to the next thing, other countries for some reason seem to be more forgiving. There weren't many acts from the 80's that managed to cling on to popularity into the 90's. It's a funny old thing, music is like fashion

I think Phil Collins has been reading too much trash on the internet. That's a common problem for people of his vintage, especially artists in the twilight of their careers. Recommendation: Don't go down that rabbit-hole, Phil. It's an uneducated, ill-informed cesspool of trolls, idiots and wannabees. You are one of the greats at your craft. Don't pay attention or give credit to the rubbish.

Also the record company knew that Phil Collins' ballads would sell millions of records all across the world, because in his solo career that was probably what he was best at recording, and producing at the time, so his record company went ahead, and released them... Phil Collins is a musical powerhouse across all genres. All those that hate him are not music lovers. They are just small minded clan fans of a progressive rock group who felt betrayed when Phil Collins left to focus on pop rock. They believe he was responsible for Genesis focussing on pop rock. The fact is Phil Collins has an amazing voice and when writing for an amazing voice, you tend to write tunes that show off that voice. The other bandmembers just wrote what made him sound good. That's not his fault. For me Phil Collins earned his prog rock cred with the work he did on Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte. The prog drumming is superb and he made Star of Syrius shine. The haters are fools. Music is a lot larger than their small minds.

90% of the hate directed at Phil was just down to jealousy. Anyone selling records at the rate he did (and appearing in movies, on tv, etc) is going to get a certain amount of resentment. I’ve loved him and his music for 40 years, but by the late 80s, even I was getting tired of hearing his voice. In the U.S., it felt like you couldn’t go 5 minutes without hearing or seeing him on radio or television, even in the supermarket or the elevator. If a fan like me felt he was overexposed, I can imagine how people who *didn’t* like his music felt. Of course it wasn’t his fault, but his cultural ubiquity-extending to things like the Live Aid transatlantic stunt with the Zep reunion, the Prince’s Trust gigs, all the awards show appearances, sitting in with Clapton, Sting, and bunches of others, appearing on Miami Vice, movie soundtracks-it was A LOT! We all needed a breather after awhile. This interview was 10 years ago. I think those who “hated” Phil have since mostly mellowed, and those who were born after the height of his fame never had any such bias against him. I think many younger people now regard him much more as a modern pop music godfather in the company of people like Michael Jackson or Prince or Marvin Gaye rather than of British rock contemporaries like his Genesis mates or the fellows from Yes or Pink Floyd. I haven’t heard an unkind word about him in ages. For my part, I shed some tears when Genesis played their final gig with Phil.

Genesis were surviving on green shield stamps and food parcels from Rutherford's Mum at one point. They never broke out of debt till Gabriel's departure. If you are going to be at the centre of something, you are going to attract love and hate. There will always be detractors - jealous, insecure, inadequate, people who have failed and who hate to see someone succeed. Welcome to our world!

I didn't know Phil Collins was "hated" - this is news to me. I like his material, both his covers and his original material.

Soppy ballads are more accessible to a wider audience than prog so in the court of public opinion, numbers are a factor. The fact that he's not a "pretty boy" might also have something to do with it. It's a huge shame Phil got so much stick though. He never deserved it and at the end of the day, he's a mega talent and that's what truly matters.

Phil comes in at number 5 on my personal list of all time great artists and number 2 as a solo performer. Those who don't like his work don't like real music imho.

I’m not a fan of later Genesis and some of Phil’s solo work but that gives me no reason to hate him. There is a lot of music out there that I dislike but I don’t hate the artists because of it.

Never hated PC. He was VERY overexposed. Taylor Swift should take a page, just saying.

Phil Collins seems to have a Target on his back. Jokes Criticism ect. Look Closer to his body of work and you see some Masterful Works. Genesis Trick of the Tail stands as a Classic Prog Masterpiece. Live Record Seconds Out one of the Best Live records put on to Vinyl. Phil 1st Solo Record is great. Phil's work with Brand X. Phil drumming is right up there with the very best. His POP Sensibilites are noted as well. I tend to gravitate to the former. Took great Courage on Genesis last Tour . I wish Phil Peace in his last years. But the Skit on Saturday Night Live about his breakups is Hysterical.

Most people have never bought an album in their lives. They go by 'celebrity' news shows.
