Going into the studio to record the album, Chris noted that he had only 9 songs. Chris had a phobia about odd numbers so "Hunger Strike" was written to be a filler song to give the album an even number. He wrote the song in 15 minutes. Eddie had come up to audition for "Mookie Blaylock", which became Pearl Jam. The song was not intended to be a duet but Chris was still trying to figure how to sing the low parts and the high parts. Eddie went into the booth and started singing the low parts to free Chris up to sing the high parts. Chris said that was exactly what he wanted and it became a duet. When the song was released, it became the highest charting single on the album. The meaning of the song is don't take more than you need.

Mother Love Bone Documentaries are all over you tube. you should check some out. According to one or two. Mother Love Bone was the original grunge band. Chris Cornell, and Andrew Wood were roommates trying to get signed in Seattle. That was their connection. Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament were members of Mother Love Bone. That after the news of Andrews death, went on to help form Pearl Jam.

Eddie was hanging out at a rehearsal when Chris was working through this song. Spontaneously, he just went to a mic and began singing the lower lines. Chris said that made it feel like a real song. There’s also an awesome live version out there, when Chester Bennington joined Chris onstage to sing most of Eddie’s parts. But because of Chris’ very broad range, he hit both the lowest and highest notes of it.

This was Eddy’s first music video. He didn’t really know how to lip sync yet. So they told him to look off at the horizon, and contemplate the breadth of his domain.

Temple of the Dog is made up of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam members, and was a project done by those close to and in tribute to Andy(Andrew) Wood; lead singer of Mother Love Bone (MLB), who died. Chris and Andy were close and two PJ members were in Mother Love Bone: Stone Gossard (guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass). There are a good number of MLB references here, including the name: Temple of the Dog. It is a line, second line, from a really good MLB song: Man of Golden Words. "Say Hello 2 Heaven" is another good Temple of the Dog song.

I’m a 30+ year car carrying member of the grunge era. I was 16 years old when one of my buddies called me over to his Nissan 280 ZX and played me Evenflow by Pearl Jam and it honestly changed my life. Slaves and Bulldozers is my favorite Soundgarden song. There are two popular live versions. Pink Pop is younger years when his voice was out of this world, but you can't understand the lyrics hardly at all. Which is fine, just be warned. Artist's Den is more pulled together and closer to the end of his life but doesn't have that youthful vocal edge. Studio versions are good but there's no official video, which is fine to just listen to. "Hands All Over" was probably their first big song. It was released in 1989. That's the album that made me fall in love with them.

By far the best album released that year and a stellar debut album. It is an absolute gem of a 90s grunge rock album, and previews the sound of Pearl Jam's classic "Ten" debut album, the following year, one of the top 10 debut albums of the 1990s. Tragic that t was just a one-off album tribute to the death of Mother Love Bone lead singer Andy Wood. One can only wonder how amazing a 2nd or 3rd albums would have been.

This is the first pro. recording Eddie Vedder ever did. ...I am not sure at "what stage" Pearl Jam were, at this time, exactly ...but Eddie V. had not begun recording with them (and I don't know what stage of development the songs from Ten were in, at this point.). Chris Cornell had decided he needed to honor and pay tribute to his friend, Andrew Wood who had been the lead vocalist of a band called: Mother Love Bone - Andrew passed away from a drug overdose and many of the remnants of his band would go on to re-form as what was, now, about to become: Pearl Jam. Cornell & Wood shared a great deal and were very close ...And the Temple Of The Dog project was a way for Chris to honor and also to mourn his friend. ...if you've heard Cornell sing, he has a lot of power in his voice and, also, tends to be known for his higher register and falsetto stuff. While recording this song ["Hunger Strike"] he had written the song with a stronger baritone element to it, that he wanted ...but in the studio, Chris was finding he had problems delivering the correct feel and tone (or maybe: the feel with the tone he had decided was necessary.) ...basically, he wasn't getting the low parts right ...and was feeling frustrated. Eddie happened to hear some work or some scratch tracks and thought: I could probably help him out with this. 🤷🤷 ...and (although being EXTREMELY insular at this point!) ...he spoke-up to Chris ...and Chris (having failed numerous times, already) felt like: "sure" "why not." "Let's try it." The result was what you hear and: although Temple Of The Dog was shelved/kept on 'the back burner' for a few YEARS ...and ONLY released to the public based-on the success that both of the members' "OTHER bands" [Pearl Jam (primarily) and Soundgarden] were beginning to garner! ...so: when they rolled out "Hunger Strike" it was an instant hit. ...but. yes: it was Vedder's first professional performance. ...and it is, actually, one of the weaker songs on the entirety of the Temple Of The Dog album! [There are MANY better compositions ...and equally-if-not-MORE heartfelt performances on it!💜💜🔥] ...Interestingly, also: Eddie Vedder never, actually, knew Andrew Wood AT ALL! ...however Eddie's emotional empathic nature and personal travails of the time, helped him, deeply reflect the correct emotional aura and parameters for what needed to be reflected. Powerful and heartfelt. Nothing less. [Cornell will bring you to weeping with some of his vocals on this album, though! 🔥]

They finished recording TOD in December of 1990 and the album was released on April 16, 1991 (just four months laters). Soundgarden was already pretty big, but Pearl Jam was not. TOD was recorded shortly after Eddie Vedder moved from San Diego to Seattle to join the former Mother Love Bone and become Pearl Jam. The Hunger Strike video, however, was not released until April of 1991, a year later, and by that time Pearl Jam WAS becomeing huge.

Soundgarden was national, but not huge. Pearl Jam was barely forming...It was a nice gesture from Chris to include new kid to Seattle Ed Vedder in the song. Was released in April 1991... Pearl Jam's debut Ten was released in August of the same year. It was also released before Nirvana "Nevermind" (Sept 91) and Soundgarden "Badmotorfinger" (Oct 91).
