This was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983. My brother was in the audience and said they blew the roof off that night. Mark Knopfler allowed Terry Williams to let it rip on the drums because it was the first time his father was seeing him play in concert. Knopfler responded with an extended guitar solo. If you watch carefully, you`ll see them laughing their tits off at each other.

Mark Knopfler was so fast and fluent on the guitar, in a friendly "cutting heads" exhibition during a concert, Eddie Van Halen smiled, bowed, and gave the stage to Mark. His "chickin pickin" finger style picking impressed the best. Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) gave him the master knod.

@@ranmaz76With the 85 version I assume you mean the "Live at Wembly 1985" and not Live aid. I agree that Knopfler performed even better in that live version, but what I missed in that one is the band dynamics. It was just average. In the Alchemy version the band dynamics was out of this world, tempo changes, the keyboardist kind of taking over one of Knopflers sequences in one of his solos, and Knopfler just let go of his guitar and just looked in awe as it happened. In the Wembly 85 performance, that magic was unfortunately kind of missing.

Some people have said Mark's vocals are sometimes not as strong as maybe they could be, but the thing which makes him stand out (for me) is that he prefers to let the music do most of the talking and singing, so his vocals might sound a little 'understated' on occasion, but his genius can never be questioned. He is definitely a 'one-off'. 🙋‍♂ ❤

I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. And this live performance, every group member played out of his skin... including their new drummer playing to his parents in the crowd... the GOAT is Mark.

This is a spectacular performance that seems to overwhelm everyone who watches and listens to it. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing in this is at a peak of excellence that very few guitarists could reach. He can obviously play very fast when he wants to, but it's not mindless speed like lesser guitarist might do. He plays in service to the song and with such beautiful tone, touch, melodic quality and creativity that combine to his signature style. The drummer, Terry Williams, is a live wire in this as well--fantastic drumming. As for the vocals, this is an extended live version of the song in which Mark is obviously being more playful and loose with his vocal delivery. I think it's fun, but the recorded version is clearly more tight and expressive in a different way.

Saw Dire Straits often in my youth, including in Paris on the Alchemy tour, and I can vouch that the whole gig was sooooo good.

To the hosts: this is the live version and as such, it is so many levels above the "crisp and clean" studio recording that there is no comparison whatsoever. This live performance is REAL! They are flowing and the audience was spontaneous when they joined the flow and started clapping.

For years I didn't know they were British. When he said way down south in London town, thought some place was called London town in the USA south. I've never been to Britain. They sounded a lot like a Southern Rock band at the time. Always loved this song.

Can I just say it's not about the wrong choice, I've noticed alot of reactions from other reactors tend to think Live is best, but when 99% of these tunes came out we listened and love the studio versions. However this is excellent. Lol

I think the first time you listen to a song it should be the studio version.

I was there! The sound of the clapping was not added. The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony and we thought it was coming down For me, Terry Williams stood out, 40 years later, I think the best drummer I've ever seen live Now to the live version of Telegraph Road

I'm Serbian 'import' since 1978 and I've listen to Dire Straits for over 40 yrs; now - also when MTV came along they featured Dire Straits all the time! Listening to them in Camaro V8 speeding through the desert was an experience I'll never forget! It was great being young during the 1980's!

I can't believe you never heard this version before. Being a live concert if anything wrong happens, everyone will know. So the pressure on the band and crew is just ginormous. During the first part of the solo, Mark turns to Terry Williams ( the drummer) and asks how did he keep up with it. Terry responded with everything he had, and then with even more. Now you MUST react to Telegraph Road, Private Investigations and Tunnel of Love from this same concert. Keep it going, you're doing a great job. Edit: I can't believe I forgot to subscribe to your channel before. Better late than never, right? I do it now. Kind regards from a Portuguese in "sunny" Ireland.

Most live recordings have parts re-recorded and overdubbed for release. Not Alchemy. This sounds exactly how it was performed.

I believe the pianist was Alan Clark. As a six-year-old child, Clark received piano lessons. From the age of nine years, he taught himself. At the age of 13 and while still a pupil at Chester-le-Street Grammar School, he began to play Hammond organ in working men's clubs in the northeast of England, and thereafter forged a successful career in music which included playing with a reformed Geordie which featured Brian Johnson (who would later join AC/DC). Brian Johnson and Mark are from the Newcastle area in N E England, Mark was born in Scotland. Knopfler was born in Glasgow and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle, from the age of seven. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. Mark Freuder Knopfler was born on 12 August 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, to an English mother, Louisa Mary (née Laidler), and a Hungarian Jewish father, Erwin Knopfler. Wikipedia.
