Essentially if you watch the series from the beginning, it's clear that Llisa is their favourite child and she has used it to her own advantage and on many occasions to hurt Bart. Marg is a neglected Bart since he was young and Homer is an abusive and alcoholic pig (metaphorically speaking) and Maggie is the only one who witnesses Bart's suffering pretty much every day. Both parents are abusive and he clearly showed how much calmer and kind he was when he was treated like any child or person of any age should be treated.
