Wow, this hurt my heart. It was like watching a funeral for a train car that helped me go everywhere I needed around the bay area. @00:30 was the hardest to view. If I had the space, I would buy an A Unit Car and install a model BART train layout inside of it.

I know, it is sad, but remember. It's kind of like reincarnation. The metals and all the materials on those cars will create something new and better. Maybe even a new train car in another part of the world (even if it could be one fleet of the future). So, it's just an allusion of an era that is going to end, but it is also a new era of something new that will be created as a result of those materials.

Car 1208 was my nemesis. I'm in my third decade as a Train Operator. If you are a frequent rider you have probably experienced what we call a "run through". This is where the computer that is supposed to stop the train at the station fails to do so, so the operator manually stops the train. Sometimes we are within the station, and can open the doors and proceed. Other times, we are partially out of the station and have to go to each affected door to activate a mechanism that physically prevents that door from opening, before returning to the cab and bypassing the safety systems to open the doors that are still within the platform. Needless to say, this causes delays, and is no fun for the operator or passengers. Back in the 90's or early 2000's, I started keeping a log of which car I was operating when this happened, and it quickly became apparent that car #1208 accounted for about 80% of the occurrences in my data. I contacted our Vehicle Trouble Desk to report my findings, and they said something to the effect of, "Oh, we know. Over the years we've replaced the antennas, the computers, even the wiring harnesses, but that car still won't stop at certain stations." (Montgomery, MacArthur, and Daly City are the ones that come to mind.) After that, I always took note of when I was operating #1208, and took matters into my own hands to ensure we stopped within the platform. Many years later, I was operating car #1208 from SFO to Pittsburg/Baypoint late one night. As we passed the maintenance yard in Concord, and started up the rise toward Concord station, I observed an enormous eucalyptus limb that had fallen across both tracks. Trains do not stop rapidly, so needless to say we hit that limb with considerable force. It knocked out the headlights, cracked the front of the cab, and damaged some track equipment, but despite my hopes, it didn't knock any sense into #1208. (i.e. it continued to stop long on a semi-regular basis.) R.I.P. #1208. Couldn't have happened to a better car.

If this footage was shot at the Hayward Yard (which it appears to be) I went on a school field trip back in 1973 with a small group of students. One of our classmates father's worked for Bart. We took the train We took the train from El Cerrito Plaza to Hayward where our classmate's dad meet up w/us. We got to see the shop, trains being serviced, parts rooms. It's where I learned one fuse for the train cost $1,500.00! And $150.00 for each sheet of window glass. Went up to the observation tower, overseeing the yard. Very educational.
@sfmike711

@TheTheo58 : I find it extremely hard to believe that one fuse would cost $1,500. The glass price is probably on the low end as it's tempered and smoked.

@@sfmike711 As I recall it was a very large cartridge type fuse with flat bar contacts on each end. Which are often used in large disconnect switches. The fuse was likely a high voltage and amperage as to the cost. The 3rd rail was 1kV DC, each car had 4 150 HP DC traction motors, each pair wired in series.

I'm a retired T/O, having left in 2013. I'm not sure why everyone is waxing nostalgic over these old cars. They were temperamental and overly prone to problems, both big and small. Things like heating/AC, doors, brakes, lighting, overheating bearings were problematic and sometimes hard to fix on the fly. The on-board computer would act up causing more headaches. I once had a fully loaded, 10-car, afternoon rush-hour train crap out approaching Rockridge. I couldn't get that computer to reset no matter how I configured it. I had to dump some 1,000 people at the station to squeeze onto following trains to continue their journeys. Folks, while the cars were cutting edge back then, they certainly gave it their all and really needed to be replaced.

Here in Boston, we had the Hawker-Siddeley cars on the Orange and Blue lines, and while they were great when fresh from the factory, 41 years of wear, tear and Boston winters rusted them alive. I've never been to SFO but I would go there just to ride the trains and trolleys, especially BART.

Let me tell you a story on my first A2 car. It was 1208, an early morning, Tuesday. It was sometime before FOTF came in, so i think like 2015. The consist of this yellow line train was, as i recall, 1208, 1844, 1531, 1689, 389, 2516, 2559, 1728, 1832, and i think it was 1195. I was at the south end of the MacArthur platform, going to SFO. As I boarded #1208, the only i thought of was how crowded it was. Packed with commuters going to San Francisco, and other people. Little did I know the 5 years later this train would be sent a scrapper, never to be seen again. As of now, January 2024, There are only 17 A2 cars left, and only 1 will be preserved.

What's the purpose of covering up the car number with tape?

I know when airliners take their last flight to the boneyard, the logo of the airline is painted over, but I can't see the purpose of blacking out a car number.
@kennethsouthard6042
@kennethsouthard6042 11 ай бұрын
Here's what I'm going to guess. Bart sold the car before it left their yard so when It was on that truck, it was no longer their property. Had an incident occurred when that car was under transportation to the scrapper, some legal mind at Bart probably figured that some way somehow someone might try to make a case that Bart is liable. They probably thought just to be on the safe side that covering up the logo could prevent that from happening. However, I really don't think that would have worked. Assume for example that there had been a major catastrophe where that car rolled off the truck on the freeway and 50 people died. Such an incident would probably exceed any insurance the scrapper had and people would be looking for deep pockets. Attorneys would argue that Bart was liable given that they knowingly sold a car to someone with insufficient means to transport it safely. This argument would hold water whether or not the logos were taped over.
