About 2 1/2 dozen short clips of the Bay Area Rapid Transit legacy fleet/old car horns. The first two minutes have just the classic electronic horn aka "boop boop"/"beep beep" horn. These have been used by BART since 1971/1972, and certainly heard on Day 1, September 11, 1972. AFAIK, it's supposed to be an A, but it's obvious that through the passage of time....and dirt, that many are a bit out of tune, to say. Every old car has this horn, and I've included various A2, C1, and C2 cars.
Contrast to most other heavy rail systems (except Baltimore...which has almost the same ehorn), BART trains sound the horn when approaching every station, and some operators will put a little flair. I think the best places to hear the horn are subway stations...nice echoing, especially neat when a TO likes using the horn. Colma is also nice
About 2:05 in (the pictures) are a couple recordings the air horns - they can be LOUD, and sometimes frightening, especially in subway stations. Used as a warning if someone is too close to the platform edge (standing on the yellow strip). Last clip was the BART version of "Shave and a Haircut"...thanks!

These really do sound better than most rapid transit horns. Washington Metro trains have an abrasive, inelegant honk. Makes me jump out of my skin. This is so much softer.

I wish you had gotten the horn at the Coliseum station, esp after an A's game. They usually play a tune for "Let's go Oakland" on the horn and it's entertaining to see the crowd react after they realize what the horn sounds like

I'll sure miss these when they're all gone. I haven't ridden BART in over a year because of the pandemic and now half of their trains are the new cars. By the time I go back to having to commute, I bet there will barely be any of these left :(

In all fairness, the new cars are fantastic compared to the old cars. Every time I have to transfer to an old train at MacArthur I am somehow still surprised how much crappier the old cars feel after sitting in the new cars for a few stations. There's just no comparison. I'll miss the old gals too, but it is definitely time for new rolling stock. The old trains belong in a museum, not falling apart trying to serve passengers. We've stretched the old cars waaaaaaay beyond their best-by date! We should have gotten new trains a decade ago!

Well the C1 and C2 are gone! Given how they never gotten a overhaul they had too many problems! The original A and B cars from 1972-1975 are still in service but also being phased out

Really, Sound design is one of the aesthetics of a transit system that rarely get's thought about.. Bart horns were some of the more pleasant but attention getting horns of a transit system.. It's good that eventually somebody in the decision process realized that maybe something close to the old tone was needed.

Unless I am mistaken its the same grover horn for each car. However certain factors like air pressure, tunnel station vs open, change the pitch and tone of the horn

Not yet, the 1970s Rohr built A and B cars are still around. There are a few C1s left too. Roughly a half and half new car and old car

Ah, that's right, the most tired joke in the trainosphere. The only problem is that CAHSR is not a rapid transit system, it's HSR. At best you could try to call it a commuter service. And in all fairness, it will run about as often as commuter system rather than an American intercity. But even that is still pretty far off the mark.

as a person how lives in the bay its going to be sad seeing these go. im going to say it right now the new ones look ugly and i think BART made new ones due to the old ones being "out dated" and no out of safety concerns. but if you can make reasons why the new ones are safer be my guest, i'd like to have a reason not to hate these new cars.

Wow. Washington Metro was having similar software bugs with their new 7000 Series trains at first. I guess it's an inherent risk when you buy the latest tech in your newest trains (or not).

Those are just minor teething problems compared to the apocalyptic mess that the A, B, and C cars experienced. Also, the techs are now buying vintage electronic equipment to keep the old trains more or less in service. So we either get new rolling stock or they will have to start running four-car trains. The only real alternative to getting new trains is a complete rebuild of the old cars to modern specs, but that would have been several times more expensive than just getting the new trains.

@@ATPTransit Is there a reason why BART trains have to sound their horns entering a station, I don't think that other rapid transit systems sound their horns entering a station. For example even in San Francisco MUNI doesn't sound it's horn entering the station.

It's a rule for train operators to sound the horn approaching a station (it helps with safety - alerting people on the platform a train is approaching). Generally speaking, BART, Baltimore Metro, and LA Metro Subway trains sound the horn/whistle approaching a station. Miami's Budd cars also had a beeper, but I do not recall if they still honk approaching a station. Muni LRVs ring the gong (bell) approaching a station in the Market St Subway. There is also an air horn, but that is only used when absolutely necessary (like the BART air horn)
