@@tyy2387 No one said anything about calling 911. Its not an emergency. The point is that transit systems that suffer from pervasive fare evasion should have police officers stationed in the buses or train stations. I live in NYC and fare evasion is rampant and only getting worse, especially on the fucking buses. 20% of bus riders do not pay! I have sat on a bus and seen 20 people sneak on at the back of the bus and thats just at one stop. It is fucking disgusting and infuriating for honest hard working citizens like myself who always pay. The NYC MTA has just raised the fare again to make up for a deficit but they seem to be doing nothing at all about the 20% of riders who evade the fare, which accounts for a $250 million loss annually. Are you suggesting that the MTA should turn a bling eye to this and push the cost off onto the honest citizens so that the low life losers can ride for free every damn day? Saying that there's not enough officers to arrest everyone everytime is not a viable argument because the point is not to get everyone every time. The point is to place enough officers in the locations where people evade the most to send a clear message that the shit will not be tolerated. It is a matter of deterrence. This isn't North Korea, so Transit systems operate on an honor system, meaning they rely on people being honest and paying their fare share for the transit service they receive, THe problem is that nowadays very many people lack integrity and accountability and want shit for free. So when it becomes obvious that people are not going to regulate themselves and do the right thing, then everyone has to suffer and police have to be present. Perhaps you drive so you don't quite understand or care about how pervasive fare evasion affects transit riders, but how would you like it if people were allowed to steal gas and that resulted in the gas prices constantly being raised? Oh and everyone doesn't evade the fare, you idiot. Most people have enough pride and integrity to not try to beg or mooch off of society, so guess what, they fucking pay their way in life. So they pay their housing costs, their food expenses, their bills and their fucking transit expenses. It's a simple part of being a fucking adult. The fact that you think everyone evades fare just tells me that you are one of the losers that seek to get shit in life for free. Grow tf up and take care of your own shit! Nobody fucking owes you anything!

I rode BART around Thanksgiving. I paid my fare. Here was the problem. My card said to see an agent. It became demagnetized.( I put it in my shirt pocket away from my credit cards.) Was there an agent at the station? NO. This was at the Millbrae station which is an intermodal station with Caltrain and an end of the line station. After waiting five minutes I called 911 and they contacted BART police. They paged the station agent. Ten minutes later I called BART police again. I heard a chuckle in the background. I guess they thought it was funny that I was a prisoner at their station. They paged him again. I could hear the page. Finally twenty minutes after I first called - he showed up. So much for customer service. Maybe if their gates worked correctly people would not evade fares. I did not crawl under or jump the gate. I waited for the agent. Again maybe if there were agents always present at the station, this would not happen. BTW I am over 65 and was told at that time I could not purchase a senior ticket. I found out you now can purchase all tickets including discounted tickets. So I was screwed twice, by paying more than I needed to and being held as a prisoner. This was during the COVID lockdown. Restrooms were closed. Stations and trains were more filthy than ever. Elevators were out of order. You would think with fewer passengers BART would have more time to alleviate these problems. Apparently not. They were two years late in just adding two more stations to San Jose. I understand the line in Santa Clara County will not be finished until 2030. I think originally it was to have opened five years earlier. Shanghai, China has a metro system larger than New York City. The first track was laid just 30 years ago. It is triple the size of BART. BART will be 50 years old next year. Why do the citizens of the four counties vote out their BART board? Customer service surveys show many riders think much less of BART than they did five years ago. I think BART needs new leadership. Either the current leadership does not know what to do or does not care.

VTA trains are even worse these days, from what I've seen the vast majority of passengers aren't paying to ride. Given that the system only has around a 12% farebox recovery ratio, I say we cut our losses and formally go fare-free as it may be cheaper than trying to actually enforce payment (and as the 9-euro-ticket "study" showed, has MASSIVE benefits for the utilization of the transit system). BART is a different story, with around a 70% farebox recovery ratio prior to Dr. Sara Cody's brilliant idea in March 2020, but there's still a conversation to be had.

I'm doing some calculating. If it costs $250 million to buy all new turnstiles, and fare evasion costs $25 million in lost fares, there's a 10 year return on investment if these new turnstiles all last 10 years (I doubt that), and that stops 100% of fare evasion with 100% of these fare evaders all now paying their fares and either not trying something else, or just not riding BART (many will just walk between stations, or try a new method of free transportation like stealing cars). The costs vs. benefit here (new gates vs. doing nothing) sides with doing nothing. Maybe until there is some sort of automatic tasing of passengers jumping the fare gates (that could be a cheaper add-on to existing gates) this problem isn't going to stop. I don't live in San Francisco, but do visit. I feel a bigger problem is how dirty stations are along Market Street, along with transients sleeping and shooting-up on drugs in the stations. It's disgusting down there. One is literally tripping over unwashed homeless going to and from the trains. Go to metro stations in many other countries. They're pleasant to use, but not here. I wonder what tourists from other countries think when visiting S.F. after they go by some seedy parts of town (you know the areas) and are jumping over people sleeping on the floor in the train stations.

It was the principal of the thing. We called it; turnstile jumping, fare beating but officially it was theft of service. Not satisfied with just masstransit theft we used to put straws in payphones and use pennies to register as dimes to make calls from telephone booths. A dime bought you 3 minutes of call time. As an unruly teen we would ride the subway drunk and stand on platforms (usually at 2am when devoid of patrons) and try to urinate on the third rail. I could never piss that far. If you look again at all the people that are going through the gates, I maybe saw one or two people that couldn't "afford," to pay. Now to me I see the problem as the price of BART is the reason why people skip the gates. Round trip through transbay tube is over $8, in New York you can go from the Bronx to Brooklyn and back on $5. The solution is simple, use the money used for changing fare gates and the extra police officers on outreach for homelessness or to keep the problem stations safe, then most importantly, CREATE A FLAT RATE FOR A SINGLE RIDE, raise the price of the ticket to $2.75-$3 for a one way single ride anywhere. I guarantee that the choice not to pay is a financial situation for most of the people going through and to make a more affordable ride will bring more people to ride and get the honest people that fare evade to pay.

NYC MTA fare is $2.75 and you'll get a 300 mile trip if you like.

Damn. That's a one station trip for Bart lol.

That New York City Transit fare is actually a flat rate. Some rapid transit systems like BART and the Washington Metro base fares according to miles travelled. That is why passengers pay upon entering the fare controls and exiting train stations. At least, paying the fare required by the carrier is better than stealing a ride.

They would have to pay me to ride.

Maybe if you didn't have to pay $10+ each way, people wouldn't fare evade.

Looks like they could add spacers below the gates to increase the height from the floor, they are too easy to hop over. This would be an inexpensive option until new gates are installed. Just some simple 4" to 6" steel square tubing or C-channel bolted to the floor, then bolt the machines to the steel.

They lose 30 million... about 25-30 employees salaries. No biggie.

They said 600 stations?

So a fare gate costs over $400,000 per turnstile?

They need to hire security put em upstairs & downstairs watchin every passenger & scoping out the area around bart stations of the bay area there i used to take bart every weekend from 2014-2016 never had a problem w no one stuck to myself & knew where i was goin each time i rode bart. But problem is they don't have any security not even any cops maybe once in a great while 1 or 2 in the afternoon then they leave but you dont see any cops there you only see the person at the information desk sittin there then sometimes their not there at all..even when i was in Richmond one night reloadin my clipper card i seen a couple of guys hoppin over the gates without payin the fare but if only maybe the city could provide more fundings to bart maybe? To hire security,if they can have security for light rail in san jose checkin everyone for a fare ticket or scanning their cards to check if they paid to ride or not then why not use em for bart theyll make good minimum wage maybe $25 an hour for bart security..last time i seen bart security come on board was when in 2015 id say when i was ridin through MacArthur oakland to SFO couple guys came on checked us all for fares & went on by. They know there has been rape & murder & gang violence for many years & every so often it happens..yet nothing is being done about it.

The security guards will be called racists by the media and Bart will get sued.
@Nikohere5 жыл бұрын
@@Notamuffins That is the Most Ridiculous statement ever..it would help reduce crime & drug possession there at the station, would you still agree to call them racist if they put in full body metal scanners like they have at the airport? There would be blacks & whites & mexicans or asians that would be security guards there because that's the common race in the bay area but only if they have security experience or hold a security guard card.

The reason you never see the Bart cops is they're too busy driving around the city streets, giving out traffic tickets.
@raybod17755 жыл бұрын
Guards with tasers.
@doctorbigsmiles5 жыл бұрын
Just install them directly into the gates! Ur hella dum
@henryshikowitz34883 жыл бұрын
1:30 bullsh!t, those fair gates look like they're older than the Bart trains P.S. there are much worse things to worry about in the bay area than fair evaders.
@sergiobertoni40743 жыл бұрын
At least in the States you make an effort to stop ticket evaders. In Italy they gave up many years ago, or most likely they have never started to try...
