The 19th century's most underrated and unjustly neglected composer. Thanks very much for this compilation.

Unbelievable that this was written in 1819. The beginning of the 3rd movement is almost exactly in the same idiom as Draesecke's or Brahms clarinet sonata's from many, many decades later.

Vielen Dank!

His life... such a sad story. Anyways, amazing piece. I've never been a huge fan of wind ensembles, but this quartet makes me want to discover new pieces in this kind of repertoire

I'm not a great fan of wind ensembles either but I like Berwald in general and this work in particular.

There are at least nine other quartets for the same instruments as Berwald, by little-known composers. The efforts of explorers will be rewarded after discovering quintets for wind and piano: (for fl cl hn bn pf) by Blanc, Onslow, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rubinstein, Spohr, or (for ob cl hn bn pf) Beethoven, Gieseking, Herzogenberg, Mozart, Spindler, Thieriot, Verhey, Volbach, or (for fl ob cl bn pf) Caplet, Magnard, Tischhauser, Witt. The repertoire is rich in good works neglected by professional groups tormented by their management seeking profit.

I love Berwald. His piano trios are delightfully eccentric and little known but I hadn’t heard this before. I thought he came to his style later in life but this couldn’t be by anyone else. It’s a pity the well known photograph shows such a serious face when his music is witty and humorous. I suspect he was someone with a great sense of fun.

I think his higher notes are full of fun and dreamy fantasies, his middle-notes more heroic/noble, and his lower notes a bit darker. I just discovered him and am memorized. Like the piano is the bones and the instrumentation the flesh. And fun for sure!

Sicher nicht auf der Höhe Schuberts, aber um Längen besser als Kuhlau. Musik die wirklich vergnüglich ist. Danke!

I really enjoy the piece's story you put in your description, it complements well the music. Is it yours or did you copy-paste it from an existent source?

Dooglass Dorénal -- I can assure you that far from "copy-pasting," Dr Bartmans (un pozo de ciencia) ORIGINATES new concepts and research by his own Protean effort....and I have seen him so often quoted (without attribution) by so-called "scholars" of piracy and infrigement that it strains credulity.

@Dooglass I most often use details by Edition Silvertrust when it comes to chamber music. I listed that in the info.

I find it unnecessary. Why not leave it at quarter notes or change the entire section to 12/8 with the dotted quarter = quarter, rather than just have that one weird 12/12 area?
