I've been to the MotoCysz facility in SE Portland to drop off parts and it was far from a "garage." It was small for a motorcycle manufacturer, but very secretive and professional. RIP Micheal. he was a visionary in the industry and help make the Portland motorcycle scene one of the coolest in the world.

John Britten didn’t have the millions that everyone assumed. He had the very best technicians that were genuine friends, the very best riders,Andrew, Chris, Jason, etc, that were also friends, and these guys and girls, along with his family, allowed him the time and energy to make a groundbreaking machine that was built by passion. Coupled with, very determined, mostly kiwi’s or New Zealanders, that broke the word Impossible down to I’m Possible. Loads of these people gave their time and help because John was a fantastic humble person that never called for help, but instead inspired people to get involved through his, Mike Brosnan, Murray’s, Bob’s,, Mike Sinclair, and countless others that were involved in other motorcycling sectors to want to be involved. I was, and enjoyed every minute of it and met some lifelong friends and acquaintances from being there. What is a damned pity is what was said at the end of this clip. God gave these two very special people the tools and ability to build something like no one had ever done and then both were snatched away by cancer prematurely. What could they have achieved if they were still here? For them, it wasn’t about the money, it was about two guys, in two different era’s, that had huge passion for motorcycles and doing something on a shoestring that defied all the major motorcycling manufacturing companies.

There was a guy in the late 70's who built a track road race bike with a 3 cyl snowmobile engine and I believe a frame made from flat plate magnesium, it was really thinking out of the norm. I remember an article in Cycle World but couldn't find his name on Google, found a picture on Pinterest with no info.

The 990cc bike, a very narrow angle V-four with concentric counter-rotating crankshafts rather than a traditional inline, was an interesting idea put into metal for sure. While the quixotic aspirations of competing in MotoGP were laughable (maybe this was just to bring attention to the project for investors, unknown), it would have made for a pretty cool and unique sportbike or perhaps gentleman track toy. On the initial C1 the CHASSIS was equally interesting and had the potential to advance the state of the art. But the motorcycling press at the time focused almost completely on the C1 engine...and that the bike would be on the GP grid in a year or two. It is therefore ironic that the bike that actually was a pretty amazing racing machine was one which ditched the IC engine entirely, retained much of the clever chassis, and performed in the new class of E-bikes. Prior to the electric Czysz, I would have argued that aside from determination (and spending piles of money) he didn't really deserve to be mentioned in the company of Britten. For electric bikes though, Czysz got it right and he is basically the Britten on that niche.

So I’m in San Diego in the early 90’s and I show up in this alleyway of garages to look at a piece of furniture someone is selling. Two garages down there’s another garage with the door open. I see one covered bike and the tail of another partially covered bike in the garage and I had never seen anything like it. I have a ZX-11 at the time so naturally I’m curious. After looking at the piece I came to look at, I see a guy in the garage so I ask him what kind of bike it is under that cover. He pulls the cover off and it is a custom made bike with a V-6 Ferrari engine in it. He whips the cover off of the other one and it is also a V6 Ferrari bike. They were amazing, custom shrouds covering the belts, etc. He even explained how he had to mate a motorcycle transmission to the Ferrari engine. He told me that he had been a MotoGP racer in Canada many years ago. His name was Andreas Georgeades. I saw those bikes in a motorcycle mag a few years later.

I disagree with your rebuttal to these two guys having money. Money is literally the biggest factor in these home brew projects. Look at any guy building a project car in his garage, its always come down to money, no matter how much skill you have you need the money to see it through. So for you to say its a naive outlook i disagree, money plays a big roll. Especially in this specific case with the electric development, its only recently electric bikes started coming to the fore front of 2 wheeled transport and if he was a innovator as you said he was then money definitely plays a role, to develop battery packs and the electronic for those things had to be incredibly expensive

I worked at Motocorsa in Portland where Michael used to buy all of his parts for his various prototypes. Several of my friends own his old Ducaties and Aprilias. All of his original prototypes were made by Speedymoto machine shop and a top tier aftermarket Ducati parts manufacturer. Many people in Portland motorcycle scene had a bittersweet relationship with him. Some of his initial ideas quite honestly were just bad. His very first motor was two oil cooled GSX-R motors cut in half and reconfigured. He was a highly ambitious man who could rub people the wrong way. He really figured out his stride when he moved into the electric motorcycle, he had a prototype modular electric motor that would have been brilliant. The other thing that I wish people knew about was when Tom Cruise crashed one of the Csycz prototypes, allegedly. 🤣

To the narrator. "you couldn't build a race bike from scratch if you had twenty-five million dollars." I hate blanket statements like that. ...then the ending redeemed my faith in the narrator when he said, "maybe the next John or Michael is watching this video." Although, my time has passed, I'm sure there's more innovative people out there... circumstances notwithstanding, they will arise

If we’re talking about Britten why aren’t we talking about motorcycle renaissance man Erik Buell?
