Love this tutorial. This is a good example of the knowledge, experience, and time it takes to build a competition motor. We were heavy into racing in the late 80's and into the late 90's. It takes time and commitment to build a quality product. As we have seen....it takes very little to destroy good work. Finding a tuner with talent can be a challenge. Great work. Be good. Stay safe!

That sounds great Lee. I'll look forward to watching the video of the meet up and see how this engine performs. It will also be cool to see the kit car on track again. I hope you kept the timings from last years outing!! Every video is superb. However, I do love the mystery blow up's and the detective work involved!! Thumbs up to you all!!

In the Dagenham factory we used a burette, it's much more accurate! I was a production engineer on OHC block and heads, York Block and heads, Kent block, and the Kent diesel block after the changeover.

Like the new sign Lee, all thorough I thing Paul did it with some Duck tape and a blunt knife. Going onto the MGB why did they not remove the breathers and bung up the hole on the inlet, run the engine and see if the smoking stops, before pulling down a rebuilt engine. Basic mechanics in my day. I raced a 1.5 per x flow on 45s in a Cortina MK1, what an engine. It never missed a beat even when revving it to 10000.

The pre crossflow, appeared to have polished ports on all of them. i could be wrong, these engines from my experience performed so much better with a rough inlet to mix the fuel and air, and polished exhaust,to get rid of the rubbish, Also the cam you have in the "hot" crossflow, is very mild, and not a race cam, if you want a race cam go to a 285, that i used many times, or from memory, a 300, but no good on the road,

@@rotax636nut5 i only ever made 150 with a 285 cam on a 1691, with 40's, but took the 40.s off, as they were shyte, and made 145 with a modified 28/36dcd reliable engine, till i cooked it with a fan belt come off, then a head gasket! used to run to 7k, but this was a home build, so i was quite happy with the results, i did my own skimming with pate glass and grinding paste

Back in the day we use 85mm Powermax pistons, Vandervell bearings and Kent cams to get the 1600cc ford up to 1760cc for the people who cheated in the 1600cc class and we did build a lot of these, but you need to get the right block for the job. It is also easy to bump the oil pressure up by pressing the pump release spring in so you can add a washer between it and the block, do not add to many as we tried more and blow a filter O ring out and what a bloody mess that was.🤫

Lee on compression ratio I forgot to mention to remember to account for rod expansion/stretch. Expansion can be measured with a rod&piston assembly out of the block. Measure the length at room temperature then put it in an oven at about 150C and measure again.

A Graham Bell wrote 2 amazing books in the early 80's. one was a 2 stroke book and the other was a 4 stroke book. If you're getting into engine tuning I suggest you buy both. They'll cost you a load of money but,the guys knowledge was Amazing. explains how to do this in his books for both cars and bikes...3.30 onwards ,volumetric displacement

5:12 That's NO pipette it’s a cheap syringe with the accuracy of a bucket. How come in your great well equipped works don’t you have a good quality burette, only cost a few quid and would instil great confidence in the works.

When I have done this its first done to make sure all the cylinders are the same cc to ensure all cylinders are the same compression ratio removing material from the chambers or grinding the valves so they all are. I have only one hole in the perspex and angle the head slightly so that hole is at the top by the edge of the chamber and use a smaller more accurate medical hypodermic from a vet. Especially when running high compression ratios say around 14 a small cylinder to cylinder cc difference can be critical.

The plasti gauge is a variation on what in industry (With much larger bearings) was checked with lead wire. Same process but the wire is measured with a micrometer after being squeezed in the bearing.

Are you calculating the static or dynamic compression ratio? For a performance engine the dynamic compression ratio is more important as it accounts for the valve timing as well as the other factors. A DCR should be in the order of 8-8.5:1, whereas the static compression ratio can be 10-12.5:1. The higher the compression the more power an engine will put out but above the DCR limit detonation can occur, the art is to get as close as possible to the DCR of 8.5:1. Whilst the engine appears to have been ported and the chambers relieved, have they been cc'd. CC'ing only one chamber presupposes the rest are the same - is that the case?
@joe-mac
@joe-mac Жыл бұрын
Very good question as I was wondering the same thing. If they do all cylinders or just base all on one, also if you had to take 5 thousands off the piston did you also take 5 thou off the valve reliefs in the piston, or is the running clearance ok still.

Lee, I'm thinking those sharp corners where the valve cutout cuts out the side of the piston could be a source for pre-ignition. Me thinks I would have rounded them off a bit to negate the potential hot spot.

Have you tried to make a nice round clear plate instead of a broken off cut of perspex. Would a 100cc burette be alot better than a cheap syringe? I noticed a small bubble left behind when filling, would that affect the final volume.,?

I'm a bit surprised that you only measured the volume of 1 cylinder. On engines that I have worked on where the head has any sort of resizing of valves or changing chamber geometry we always measured the volume of every cylinder to make sure that they were within a millilitre or less in volume.

Got a quick question I've rebuilt my n43b16a engine from116i I bought a head gasket set from the shop which they said was the right one for my engine and it just will not start tried for over a week all times perfect looking through the receipts and parts what I've noticed is the original head gasket is 0.62 and the new gasket the shop gave me was 0.80 which has been installed would this be our problem of a no start with lowering the compression of been thicker or would it not make much of a difference any help would be greatly appreciated 🙈 😎
