BASE cutaway fail - hook knife emergency

A sketchy jump from the summer of 2014. I was in a little bit of a hurry to prepare on take-off and I clicked in the main carabiner directly into the already armed 3-ring release which I highly trust. By mistake, I linked the carabiner inside one thickest of all 3 rings without noticing (missing pre-flight check!). When I was pulled to release I immediately noticed that it is going wrong, but I thought I just have to pull it again. However, it still did not release. After a few moments, I carefully looked at the connection and saw the problem, realizing that it is completely locked - no way out. The next immediate thought was the hook knife which I brought into action.
The result: higher than usual adrenaline peak.

That’s why I prefer hang gliding. You don’t have cords that get tangled and the wing is far more stable.

If the wing didn't deploy the base system, what did? Why did it work after you cut it with the hook knife?

Looks for like it wasn't a classic acro base harness but a normal harness with base system backpack like a normal skydiver.

Yes, this is a manual pitch of the pilot chute to deploy the parachute. The cutaway of the paraglider wing is not related in this case. He reenters freefall and chooses to deploy the parachute when he gets stable.

You can see that as he reaches back with his right hand to the Bottom of Container BOC position where the pilot chute is, he maintains a stable belly to earth position by momentarily bringing his left hand/arm towards the centre.
