The tech guy at my local Apple Store and I went through what I needed to do on the mini. I have a studio nano display a 4K Dell Pro Display and great Logitech MX keyboard and mouse. My use case list went: 4/6k+ pro log videos from Fuji and Canon cameras; photo editing from 80mb RAW files from same cameras; engineering modelling (fusion and autocad); and advanced audio music mixing from multiple mic sources. He said minimum 24gb ram or 48gb if I needed multi tasking and fast rendering (I don’t really need that..I can have a coffee break!), min 512 SSD (as it’s a faster drive) on the mini pro and possibly the upgraded connection for fibre if working with online tools like iCloud and OneDrive. This was professional advice from Apple and not an upsell, as he then said use a high quality T4 or even T5 2Tb external drive for backup and keeping the main machine hard drive clear and in peak performance. So this looks rather like PR’s conclusions. Luckily I’m in education so get a small discount. As the sales guy said to me ‘if you are using £6 to 8k of source gear (cameras and mixing desks etc) the mini pro is a sensible investment that will last years.’ I asked him about going the MacBook Pro route and he said if I’m using a pair of great monitors and speakers and sitting T a desk most of the time, a Mac mini is a better long term proposition as the battery life replacement cost/wear and far more expensive Apple Care would add substantially to the lifecycle cost. Just honest and professional advice which was great to get.

Also, I got one with the base 16GB of RAM (same as my workhorse M1 MacBook Air from 2020) but upgraded to the 512 GB SSD (a faster drive, plus the convenience of having it built-in) for the extra $200, bringing the total cost to $800, still very affordable and still $600 less than the binned M4 Pro Mac Mini. @@JamesBond-fo6ow Getting a bit hyper defensive there with that rant. I posted who gets the most out of it, not can it be used anywhere nor is it bad. Based on IT use cases of mini-PCs and where Mac Mini get used the most often. FAANG companies and highly VC funded startups get the most use of Mac Minis. My wife uses a MacBook Air for personal needs and logins into work from her company provided M1 MacBook Pro 14-inch laptop at home. The Mac Mini wouldn't be any different except for the rare times she has to come into the office. She was part of a startup. Older boomer tech companies and financial firms nowhere near as much. Usually, HP Elitedesk/Dell Optiplex/Intel Nucs get used the most often for small mom & pop companies without VC funding or non-tech focused industries. The primary reason is they are in a Windows heavy ecosystem. It makes more sense to use Windows mini-PCs for apps/software like Power BI or Solidworks. Also, easier for technicians to change/upgrade SSD storage and control hardware via vPro.

An inexpensive solution is to have multiple accounts on one laptop. Use one for the day job and another for KZbin.
@PatrickRambles6 күн бұрын
How does that solve anything? I'd still have to bring my computer back and forth between house and studio. Separating accounts is not the point.

I don't get how Apple finesses its base with those base specs then charge a ransom to flesh it out to modern day specs. And you have to be Doctor Who to swap that SSD lol. THe M chips are truly amazing but they are tethered to a company who does deep psychological research on just how gullible their buying base really is. Yuck. And I'm a iphone and Ipad user before this comes off as hate.

Wrong, n no base module no longer works because the pro will give you more. Mac mini Pro are the best and lost the memory 64 GB and storage about 512 GB or 2 TB .❤❤❤❤🎉😂😅😊

I turned off my AI for the base model as I have it on my phone. And I’m sure with it turned off it will use less resources. IMO

I wish you guys would stop saying it’s the best value. Apple prices these things at a cheap price in a useless state. They finally raised the ram but kept the HD at an anti consumer and useless size. It might be ok if all you do is read email and surf the web but who is that these days? So you will either have to pay the apple tax to upgrade the Hd to something you can use or you have to but an external drive which still adds to the cost. It’s a bit of a bait and switch.

IF , I had the ability :) to use AI to analyze all Mac Reviewers , it would probably show that 99% of reviewers always go for film editing, most " normal " people don't do what youtube creators do. but that aside 16gb is just useless as you proved. I bought my wife Macbook one 5 or so years ago (intel), I figured she likes the Iphone and Apple loves to force their user to ONLY use their products to do 2 factor . Every time she needs help I get so frustrated with the incessant Apple password entry , it drives me crazy . She's used that laptop maybe ten times. I used it when my PC got damaged by Edison Power spikes. but let's face it most people just surf or use Facetime (grand kids )from time to time . I don't get why Mac lovers keep putting up with Apples refusal to make a machine with the proper amount of memory and hard drive sizes for today's needs. as you can tell not really a fan of the UI, but was impressed when they switched to BSD as the base OS . but even that , time has caught up with ( security attacks ) . not here to bash just to question it all. I was considering the new ones as the M4 is impressive and the power consumption awesome as well as the OS reliability as Paul Thurrott constantly compares pc laptops hardware just not able to control power uses and bugs , Apple wins that due to controlling the whole machine and OS made for just Mx chips and their integrated chipset . for 300.00 more I will be buying the Asus G16 with the Zen 5 series, not happy with that eaither as they are using 14 or 16" screen to try and get close to the M4 power usage. In closing just bored and felt like responding . and no not pushing my views , just ranting I guess . oh yes LOL you reminded me of my middle son who also keeps 40 tabs open on his 64gb PC , or his older brother that has 300 icons on his desktop , that's insanity to this old timer . anyway just disregard my comments , it's more of a mental thought that maybe should not be typed out loud LOL

LLM performance is still a joke even with a maxed out M4 pro model. I think we will have to wait for the M5 or M6 for that. M4 isn't good enough for 70B models and 8B models runs fine on any laptop, so nothing special there.
@tamalchakraborty53467 күн бұрын
Bud , you realise M4 is an entry level chip which is equivalant to i3/ Ryzen3. You wanna run a 70B LLM on that ?
@burgerbee51697 күн бұрын
@@tamalchakraborty5346 read one more time: "maxed out M4 pro". We need the 64GB option to begin with (40ish GB in Q4 + context + OS).
