OK--
I'm getting ready for my 1930s themed camping trip in a couple weeks and as I get my kit together, I'm doing some show and tell. First up is the musette bag and pocket trash then, we weigh it to see how heavy it is. In subsequent videos to follow, we'll do this with the kitchen and food, sleep/shelter system, and the clothing.

9:50 Hey Sarge I have the distinct pleasure of being the chap who suggested James check out your channel. He and I are recently acquainted and in casual conversation 8-10 weeks ago I all but gushed “James, brother, you must check out Sarge. You’re practically long lost cousins” Anyhow God bless you

Well, thanks for finding my cousin! James contacted me regarding a 1950s camping series he's developing, we've had some DM convos on that. He's one of the KZbinrs I try to emulate.

Vintage camp gear is so cool and so much fun to learn with. I used to go camping and hiking with my dad when I was child in the 1960's. He go a lot of WWII and WWI gear from Army Surplus and it all was reliable.

When I was a kid, all of my gear was either WW2 surplus or Sears Roebuck J.C. Higgins (Daddy worked at Sears and got a 10% discount). The stuff is bombproof and back then it was cheap and widely available. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! The boots are made by Logsdon & Company. You can find them on the web, and Nathaneal Logsdon has a KZbin channel (20th Century Adventures) as well. Links to both are in the comments in all of my videos. I also have a video review of Nathaneal's boots in the Living History play list on my channel.

I've assembled a vintage kit based on Colin Fletcher's 1958 Thousand Mile Summer equipment list. I take it on every trip to Death Valley and get along comfortably. At home it serves as my 3 Day Emergency Kit. Townsend Whelen's On Your Own in the Wilderness is another great source.

Would love to see pics! Would even do a video using them if you'd like. Its exercises like this that expand the knowledge.

Really not a bad total at all for leather and canvas gear. With an oilcloth for shelter and a blanket for warmth you're still at a reasonable weight. Nice.
@sargevining
@sargevining 9 ай бұрын
Before having to attend to the dog, my original plan was a 7 x 4 oilcloth tarp, rubberized canvas/wool blanker browse bag ground cover and a down sleeping bag made in 1928 in a horseshoe roll. The dog complicated things in that I needed a shelter she could sleep in without having to keep a leash on her and a ground cloth and insulation that was big enough for both of us--which means I have to use a backpack. I'm probably going to carry 6-10# more than I would have with my original set up. I could use this musette set up with the aforementioned tarp and a light blanket tied to it in spring and summer. Thanks for watching!

Because of you, I now have a very good reproduction of the M1936 U.S. Military Musette Bag. And I am very happy with it. I just need to finish water proofing it.

@@sargevining A product called "Duckback". Which is actually made to water proof things like Oil Skin coats and hats. But it does a great job on Canvas.

@@longrider42 I'll have to check that out. My go-to musette is untreated, but I have another I might try it on to see if it suits my purposes. Thanks!

I've had no complaints about mine. I've had it about 10 years and its served me well and its still as sturdy as the day I opened the package. Thanks for watching!

That is a nice gear set up. Something I was taught by an old timer long ago was to put strike anywhere matches in a section of inner tube about double the size of the matches fold the two ends over and fasten tight with rbber bands. Even by the time of WW1 they were common items as was tire cement for patches so you could glue one end. I have two Marbles match safes one is a Boyscout that took me a while to figure out as it is brass and doesn't have the tip out out feature. I finally realised that it had at one time been nickle coated brass. My stepfather had it and it was always brass so it must hase started peeling long ago and then someone removed all of the nickel. I do have a brass match vesta for small matches but it would never be water proof.

Another trick was to wrap matches in waxed paper twisted at the ends (and sometimes covered with candle wax). Gives you waterproofed matches and kindling in the same package. Thanks for watching!

Were I going out for an overnighter, I would not take that big box of matches. The space could be usable for something...like maybe food or a flask of something restorative.
@sargevining
@sargevining 9 ай бұрын
You are correct. Including them was more of a knee-jerk as the Musette is where that particular box of matches stays. I have another on the window sill of the cabin. Thanks for saving me a couple ounces and making room for dog food!

Okay, in the Musette bag is a Horizontal loop. Any idea what it is for? I do have a Mora knife that fits into that loop nicely.
@sargevining
@sargevining 6 ай бұрын
The truth is that nobody really knows what the original intent was. WW2 guys think its to hold the folding poles for a shelter half, but the loop was on the musettes made in France for civilian consumption prior to WW1. I sometimes carry my mess utensils there. Whatever suits you would work, the Mora seems like a good idea. Thanks for watching!

Oh, will you wear that as a shoulder bag, or with the pistol belt and suspenders?
@sargevining
@sargevining 6 ай бұрын
I wear as a shoulder bag with either a horseshoe roll or backpack. Suspenders under a backpack can get a bit uncomfortable. Thanks for watching!

I don't really worry about weight. I know the base weight for the thing I need to carry, (sleeping bag, tent cook gear, compass/knife, etc.) and I constantly shed clothing because I use it to make char cloth as I go, or it might rip and gets used for scrubbing rags & burned. and we usually redistribute food & water to whomever is in better shape that day.
@sargevining
@sargevining 9 ай бұрын
I do the "Base Weight" things knowing that there are longtime backpackers out there who would be interested in the content but might not be attracted to the video unless I speak in that "language". Like you, weight has never been a big concern for me (at least its not been a goal to achieve as it is for some folks).

Hey sarge I have a 8 x 10 x 2 haversack if you were me what would you put in it ?
@sargevining
@sargevining 9 ай бұрын
While the contents of a haversack are a personal thing, and can depend on time of year, climate, terrain, etc. My personal goal is to have at least two ways of making fire, snacks and small articles that I might need during the day when on the move. Modern considerations would be my smart phone (turned off to save battery) and First Aid (which wasn't as well understood back in the day as it is today). The idea is to have items that might be needed during the day in a place that is close at hand so as not to have to shed your pack and go digging through it to find what you might need, as well as the MINIMUM requirements to spend one unplanned night in the field (two small meals and a means to cook them) should the need arise. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
