Have you used this tarp in a serious storm? I love the features of it, but on the entire internet, I've been unable to find any videos or even detailed descriptions of how well oilcloth holds up to severe rainfall. I know it will shed a light rain, but I would love to know if heavier rainfall and/or use as a groundmat on wet grass will cause water to permeate it.

@sargevining 18 сағат бұрын
Have not used it in heavy rain, but since I live in coastal Texas, it's a definite possibility, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it provided I could find ground high enough to drain water away from the pitch.

Oh my! OME, was a cool cat. Thanks! I gleaned much from that. Sounds like common sense was just as rare then as now. I’m with you, concerning hot weather. Here in deep Southeast Louisiana, I don’t like to camp until after the 1st freeze. Knocks back the skeeters, along with creepy crawlers, etc. Of course, even though we may have a freeze, it will easily warm up into the 80’s. Followed by a mild overnight in the 50’s. 😆 Born in 59’ , I’m really enjoying and appreciate what you’re doing here. 🫵👍

Ome Daiber is probably one of the most important gear designers in History and nobody knows who he is, and that's a tragedy. We all sleep in the woods a lot warmer because of his invention. I'm right with you in not camping until after the first freeze. Right now, we're seeing nighttime temps with a heat index of 105 degrees (!).

My wife and I attended a series of Backpacking meetings in El Cajon, CA (San Diego) at Andy's place, circa mid 60s. We had his packs, dome tent and sleeping bags. The sleeping bags were made to order with a double inverted V design where there would be no cold spots and the down couldn't shift in the bag. Very high quality and we are still using the down (with extra filling) sleeping bags today. Liked the zippers.

I'm a bit dismayed as well as a bit delighted at my collection of e-books and links to pdfs. While I appreciate the freed-up space in the house from the lack of bookcases and the ability to access 100-year-old magazine articles I'd never been able to in the past, I do miss the smell and feel of an old book or magazine. While I have electronic copies of most of the books on the shelf, I wouldn't think of divesting myself of them. Thanks for watching!

Your thoughts, musette bag vs haversack? Pluses and minuses for each..
@sargevining
@sargevining 3 күн бұрын
I do prefer the musette due to its bellows construction: wider at the bottom than it is at the top. This tends to keep items inside from spilling out if its knocked over while open. Haversacks can be made of a larger capacity, but 7-8 pounds is about all I want to carry hanging on one shoulder. This can be offset some with two quarts of water in a canteen supported by the opposite shoulder, and be equally offset with a gallon. That's if you're not carrying a sleep system in a horseshoe roll. That's going to get around 10-15 pounds depending on weight of blankets and shelter, then the water goes on the same side as the musette. But its going to be a constant battle equalizing weight with a horseshoe roll set up b/c the opposite side is always going to get lighter b/c that's the side that has all your consumables, so its always getting lighter. Thanks for watching!

To be honest, the "cabin" is a couple of fake walls in my dining room, but it is the place where I do all my reading and research as well as shooting video. God made the outdoors to teach us what beauty is. He made the birds to teach us how to sing and make music. He made sunsets and sunrises to teach us how to paint and do art. He made it so that its that way all the time, even when we're not there, so its ready for us when we need it. Most of us understand that we need it, and he did it that way so we can understand that we need Him. Thanks for watching!

@@sargevining My hurricane apps all currently now show the storm coming ashore near Port Lavaca and San Antonio Bay as a Category 1 hurricane. Then headed toward College Station then onward to East of Texarkana. Off course last night they predicted it would have landfall 90 miles South of Port Lavaca and the night before the prediction was Texas/Mexico border. Does seem to be moving North and East from me. I agree, my hurricane preparedness was mostly fueling my RV as it contains everything I need to survive for quite awhile. Including my ability to relocate off my barrier island. Category 1 or 2 - no worries. Category 3 or above I head North. In the early 1980s I easily survived a Category 3 storm in Houston. In the 1950s and 1960s I survived two Category 4 storms in Massachusetts. All is good.

Along with Buzzacott's Sportsman's Encyclopedia I have Stewart Edward White, and most of Calvin Rutstrums books. He was born in 1895 , so was in WW1 and camped from the St Croix River to Canada and actually was camping before WW1. If you are a canoe person he is a good instructor. Of course you need Camping with the Cree from Eric Sevareid. I can't paddle as good but I have a small square stern Grumman with a 2 hp motor that will let me explore. Your train reminds me I have my dad's oil lamp that he had in his room. He had his dad's .410 which was bought new in 1906. I passed it on to my son as well as dad's guitar that he got at 15 in 1930. Although I like having my dad's things I passed them on to my son early so he can have that connection.

Thanks for the mention of Eric Sevareid. I had no idea he'd written that book, I ordered it as soon as I check to see if it was the same Eric Sevareid I watched on TV as a kid. I remember my Dad telling me to shoosh whenever he came on the nightly news to deliver commentary. Our canoe was a ten foot Sears aluminum square back, but Dad never got the motor he'd intended on getting when he bought it. That's the one we used when we canoed the Connecticut. Dad developed a "steering" technique whereby he'd place the paddle directly behind him at the center of the square back and angling the blade. Many moves over the years and a large family far away has resulted in that train being just about the only thing of my Dad's I still have. The fact that both of us played with it in the same place kind of makes it special to me. Thanks for watching!

Mine worked very well for about 4 years then the control valve started to fail and fuel canisters started having particle contamination issues that clogged the orifice of the stove, it started acting more like your example. When I originally bought mine You could buy Gerry fuel canisters they seemed to work better but then for some reason they stopped making them that’s when I started having problems with contaminated fuel. Army/Navy surplus musette bags were my book bag at Wahl-Coates elementary school circa 1962-1968 a new commercial book bag was not common. The Musette bag replaced a flour bag that I previously carried my bag lunch pencils, and spiral bond 4 subject note book. If I carried books home for homework my leather belt was used to bind the load of books together and carried by the strap over my shoulder. When the opening of the Tobacco market happened ( right before school started after labor day) I always went down to the Three Guys from Dixie Army/Navy store and bought something I needed for woods running and/or school like wool glove liners and leather gloves shells, wool socks, khaki uniform pants, the old Jeep knit hats (Radar O'Rielly) or a Pea Coat/M41 field jacket. I still like to haunt Army/Navy surplus stores Like Saigon Sam's outside the the Camp Geiger gate at Camp Lejeune. USMC always had the best gear. Very good video. If you know some one who likes to have picnics with picnic tables the enamel cloth makes excellent tablecloth gifts. Compare it to the stuff sold today that hardly lasts one time and has to be fastened down, it's night and day difference. Use a lighter color and if you want to get a bit fancier buy a stencil or two paint some decorations on it. Wiped down and either folded or rolled it will last a long time.
@sargevining
@sargevining 8 күн бұрын
I have nothing to prove it, but it seems to me that enameled cloth for table covering is making something of a comeback. There are several restaurants in the neighborhood that are using enameled cloth on all of their tables. I came across many websites selling "oilcloth" tablecloths in my research for this video. The does make it a bit confusing for folks (like me) who associate "oil cloth" with something completely different. I will be making another ground cover that more closely matches the one in the 1929 Western Auto catalog that this is based on, as well as some waterproof stuff sacks that I will be putting up for sale n VICO Expedition Outfitters.

Sarge I have a bit of an upgrade to your process that might make it easier.instead of putting any kind of holes in your waterproof material, lay out your mattress ticking upside down, put your batting on top of it, then button tuft the batting to the ticking,then stitch the back and front together and pull out to the right side out and seal up the last seam no chance of wicking possible at all
@sargevining
@sargevining 9 күн бұрын
My design came from a distant memory of a listing in an early Western Auto catalog that I had seen online somewhere a couple years ago and couldn't find, so I went with what I remembered. I found a hard copy of the 1929 Western Auto Catalog that had the mattress I was trying to remember and got it in the mail the same day I released this video. From what I can discern by a black and white wood cut less than an inch high, the original was made exactly as you're describing. The only change I'd make to your design is that, since I'm using a synthetic filling that resembles kapok, I'd need to sew a lightweight inner shell to hold the material in before tufting. Its a pretty cool design in that the mattress is 48 x 86 (they call it a "double") and the waterproof component is about 6" wider on both sides and the top and folded over to trap the mattress "bag" and allow one to fold the cover over the edges before rolling to make a water tight roll. I'll be making one in a few weeks as soon as I can source the buckle hardware. Wish YT would let me post pics in comments---

There's an old military adage: "Don't prepare for what you think the enemy might do. Prepare for what he is capable of and then you'll be prepared for anything he might do." With just a bit of tweaking, we can extend that mode of thinking to our camping/hiking planning. In this case, the enemy is the climate. Sometimes its terrain.

I used a Yucca pack as a Boy Scout in the late '50s. We carried sleeping equipment in a horse-shoe roll tied around the perimeter of the pack and outside of it; we also carried a shelter-half , probably strapped on the bottom of the pack. I camped in the woods, in snow, and on jamborees with that pack thank you very much. I wouldn't want to do the Appalachian trail with one today, but as an 11-year old it was terrific, affordable, and just worked.

I suppose my antipathy towards Yuccas might have something to do with the fact that we wuz po folks when I was young and I wanted a Kelty but could only afford a Yucca, and a cheap Japanese clone Yucca at that.

My own suggestion, and what's worked well for me is to dunk the whole tent using a tote or five gallon bucket.Soak about 5 minutes,then set the tent up or hang it,preferably in the shade. It's never damaged the existing PU coating. Looking forward to your video of your using the tent. This tent was my primary tent for a few decades, many winter backpacking trips, in several states in subzero cold. I once spent a night w. my son in a dumping 6 inches of rain, roads washed out for miles around, not a drop in the tent. Another great thing was being able to set the rainfly up with a couple of sticks (or trekking poles). There has probably been a dozen times I've waited out a thunderstorm while on the trail. Properly staked out the thing is bombproof. At a group campout on the Ohio River, I had left to drive the 3 short miles home to get a shower and change of clothes, upon my return about 25 tents were destroyed, a downbursting thunderstorm had come through during my short absence, with the TNF Sierra being the lone survivor of the ordeal. When the extreme winds hit, most took shelter in their cars. A friend reported that "Your tent didn't even move !".

All of my tent videos have been put on hold due to some extreme weather we had down here. I shoot most of my outdoor footage in and around a dispersed campsite in the Sam Houston National Forest. But we had what is called down here "A locally heavy thunderstorm" right smack dab on top of SHNF and about 20 inches of rain fell in about an hour, with associated high winds and likely a number of bursts throughout the Forest. The whole dang forest was closed from 26 April until 21 May and it is slowly opening. They're making monthly reports on openings, but as of 21 June the site I use is still closed. Now we're seeing daytime temps in the high 90s with heat indexes in triple digits. If my campsite opens before mid September, its going to be too hot for an Old Man to safely go camping by himself. When things do shake out, its gonna take a bit to re-prioritize and re-organize those vids.

This is a very cool piece of vintage gear. It seems like it would be awkward to put together in the field. You need a large flat area to fold and button up , if you laid it on the ground it'll get dirty. All in all I like it but for simplicity sake I'll stick with a modern bag.
@sargevining
@sargevining 14 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Granted that, as a blanket, it has more utility in a Base Camp or cabin scenario where having the option to use as a blanket or bag would be a good one to have. That being said, it also gives one the opportunity to have a sleeping bag to take on short overnights away from base without having to pack one in addition to the blanket, and you would make it into a sleeping bag on your cot before leaving camp. I'd also assume that including a waterproof ground pad would also be part of that overnight kit. Granted, not optimum for modern day use, but for what those guys were doing and the way they were doing it, especially at a time when there weren't a lot of commercial bags and those that existed were fairly expensive, its a viable option.

Awesome video, I had my Academy Broadway from the late 70s until about 5 years ago. It was big and bulky but it held a ton of stuff. I was terribly unkind to it , but it took 10 years of solid use in the explorer scouts and plenty of personal trips. It took retirement in my shed to destroy it.

Like our legs, our packs deteriorate when not taken hiking. The packs of the period get a lot of undeserved criticism as being too heavy, but it was the amount of stuff that we put in them that was the culprit. Thanks for watching!

Yes, the "old ones" had a pint capacity, but if you8 didn't want to spill any, it was 3 cups. Probably one of the most successful gear designs in the History of Man. Thanks for watching!

I'm looking at different blankets for making one. If I do, there certainly will be a video in the Sportsman's Workshop playlist on how to make them. I'm also going to be selling the stuff I make in the "How To" videos. If I had a good time making it, I'll make a couple, if it was a PITA, I'll just sell the one. Very informal, will be selling on a Facebook Page I've set up called VICO Expedition Outfitters. I'm in the process of gathering things and taking pics. Thanks for watching!

I can still smell that place. Probably the root of my khaki canvas addiction--- Kind of tragic in that as iconic as that place was and how important it was to our adolescence and teenage years, the only pic of the store is that one I cropped out of an overall aerial view of Elm St in the 60s. I'd love to find a street view shot of the front door. Thanks for watching!

Really nice with that linen finish. Hemp linen has come a long way these days too. Easily as soft as fkax linen, but i think hemp might have more antibacterial properties. Great idea with the shipping blanket! Wadding is a challenge. The synthetic stuff is so light and non absorbant.. but, well, it's plastic.. and I'm sure it holds bacteria more than natural would.. But I'm scratching my head in what to use. Wool wadding is still plentiful here in Australia.. but I'm wondering about fabric off cuts. It won't be as confortable, but i have lots of small sheepskin offcits, as well as wool weave cuts. Rather than tufting that, I'm thinking to sew a matress of tubes to stuff, then sew it up the long edge.

If you watch my video on Warren Miller's Sleeping bag, you'll see he used "shingled wool batts". By that I took that he had square or rectangular wool felt sheets that he laid on up on another to get a double thickness. (If you make it, increase the width by a few inches at the shoulder, Miller was a small guy.) I'm convinced that I can do something similar with these shipping blankets doubled up and quilted. The would be an air space between the inner shell and the inner blanket, and another between the two blankets that would (IMO) make it warmer than the two blankets and not be excessively bulky.

@@sargevining thankyou, I watched all three videos and ordered the two books you've recommended. It is difficult to match today's expectations to yesterday's methods, but not impossible. Many of the old techniques can be improved on, imo, while remaining within the material limitations. Use of skins is very viable, even today. I use sheepskins, or Eastern Grey kangaroo skins as a bed. Sheepskins are surprisingly light, but bulky. They are very good insulation though. Kangaroo is extremely strong, very light weight, and very soft fleece, better for hot weather. Brushtail Possum (protected Australian native, but a resource harvested in NZ) is second to none! Very light weight, very strong, very silky, very warm. Curious that feather down took so long to catch on. I see you have a video about down, so I'm heading there now.
