Little league baseballs have much higher seams and don't get changed as much so the mud isn't necessary. If you ever get a chance compare a LL baseball to an MLB ball, totally different.

So basically the key is high inorganic material. Which is why mud from a grassy area will not work the same way. Clay is needed, I suspect you could use any kind of clay, not just from the deloware
@coreygolphenee96332 жыл бұрын
I think the super fine silt texture it has is hard to replicate, the stuff has the consistency of sour cream and will not score into the leather of a ball, it's basically exfoliating the ball

@utubesqueeze The brand-new balls they used before they began mudding were slick, so there were a lot more wild pitches. It all started in August 1920 when Ray Chapman, a shortstop for the Cleveland Indians was struck by a pitch and died days later. After that, umpires began looking for a way to add grip to the ball.
@Livereater7 жыл бұрын
wouldn't the baseballs back in 1920 had been used enough thru the course of the game to not be slick?

"It's mud, the kind I played with as a kid" is a scientifically exact statement. People spend $100 for a small tub literal river silt because MLB has a contract with some dude for mud. Heres a secret... the application of any mud in the right quantity will achieve intended results. So will rolling the ball around in the dirt and playing catch. Potters clay also works great.
@azcardguy7825 Жыл бұрын

@lazarra101 because chalk is white, he mentioned that pitchers wanted it darker so they could have a grip on the ball. I don't play baseball so I don't know what that means... Plus I can imagine that mud would stick onto a baseball much better than chalk would.

This is why the basebakks are so slick and why they need the sticky stuff to grip the balls. If they stop doing this maybe the pitchers can grip the ball. dry mud has a slick dry dusty feel this should stop

New ball will sail unpredictably without being rubbed down. For me it would sail left about 6" to a foot. Pitched from Little League past College. Pitchers hate throwing a ball that isn't rubbed down. Can't control a fastball. Curve, slider no big deal because you're throwing against the seams and intentionally spinning the ball. Best I can explain a new, unrubbed ball, is it's like throwing a fork ball or split finger fastball, only even more uncontrollably.

Hell, I played a lot of football in the rain and mud in full gear over 30+ years ago and it still doesn't bother me to get muddy in my own work clothes if I have to...it shows character! I don't think having muddy feet will give this gentleman "cooties" if anyone's grossing out about it! I'm sure he's used to it. Has anyone thought maybe he feels comfortable that way? You should check out a video on how major league baseballs are produced, it's quite eye-opening the amount of effort that goes into it. They make them in Puerto Rico, I believe. Someone has to sit there and poke holes into each of the two leather panels, use a toxic adhesive to stick it on the wound up ball of string, then sew it up stitch by stitch.
