Clearly they have talent, and that didn't come from sitting around, it came from playing ball. If we didn't have them guarding the lines, the MLB would likely have to put up a fence/net... their presence is appreciated and respected. I know that the Nationals use mostly college softball players as their ballgirls. I learned that fact when my TA (I am an adjunct professor at a university here in DC), who was on the university's softball team, discussed having several of her teammates as ballgirls. It makes sense as they are skilled with the glove, they understand the rules and it is a nice part-time job for these students.
