They discuss how we are all innately spiritual beings, the differences between religion and spirituality, the science-backed benefits of building our spiritual core, and three keys to leveraging the awakened brain. There is the possibility of a “spirituality” that involves our capacity to create meaning, be a benefit to others and commune with them, cultivate awareness of our interconnectedness, have faith in life, bestow a sense of sacredness on the mundane, ritualize important life events, have gratitude and extend compassion and non-judgment to everyone. These qualities sit comfortably within this life and this world and have the kind of benefits for our well-being that we can explain through concrete mechanisms related to the satisfaction of human needs. However, Dr. Miller goes beyond the pale of scientific naturalism by invoking supernatural concepts such as non-local minds and hearts that sense the future. She leverages the language of neuroscience to legitimize opening up the aperture so far that it becomes possible to say that it’s possible to know something without evidence through intuition. But intuition is well understood as a fast-thinking system based on pattern recognition. Its accuracy depends on repeated practice in similar situations with relevant feedback. Further, spirituality, defined as the sense that we are loved and guided, is only properly spiritual if understood as loved and guided by something beyond ourselves that is transcendent. But would this be desirable? When we project this abiding love and guidance somewhere external, it becomes a form of self-alienation and secession of responsibility. How many people commit harm to self and others in the name of acting out a divine will or acting for the greater good? How many live just going through the motions with no sense of agency? Perhaps the good we seek is unconditional self-love, self-trust and self-responsibility.
