I just wrote this w/out looking at other comments and noticed the comment from Victoria which I totally agree with. Fun and well documented adventures.

Thank you for going through all the troubles to film this for us!! Hand warmers work awesome to warm up your boots and gloves in the morning. Put them in your boots and use your gloves to trap the heat inside. By the time you convince yourself to get out of the sleeping bag they are warm enough to put on. lol

@@basecampchris Nothing beats a insulated sleeping pad in the winter.. I use the Klymit Static V insulated year round. its like 1.6lbs and R rating of 4.4. But its not as wide or as thick as your pad. I also use the foam z pad year round because it is very light and is extra protection for the blow up mat. I also carry a 2 man tent. I think the extra room for gear and moving around is worth the extra weight. Klymit also sells a Quilted and non quilted sheet that will increase the R rating of your pad and weighs 7 or 8 oz and the best part it has a pocket to hold your pillow in place

What a perfect little camp set up. I suspect that you had to carefully hold your boots slightly over the fire to help thaw. Have you ever camp up at the Kern River Chris. There's this campground called Limestone campground with spaces where you can pull into for your camp site - your camper would fit perfect in one. There below the camping area you can hike down very short distance to a sandy beach area (depending of water level of the river) and fish, also there is a naturally formed rock that looks like a giant alligator's head and a sand or gravel dune just behind it looking like the alligator's body. My family would go to that spot to camp most every summer when I was younger - instead of Limestone campground, we affectionally called the area "Alligator Rock". Back in the day people used to inner tube down the river and swim across it to the alligator's head to dive off of it or the cliff faces to the side. I've lost many a frisbee, stuffed animals and Barbie dolls down those rapids, I don't think they do a lot of diving and inner tubing now a days since so many lives have been lost in the Kern river. Merle Haggard wrote a song about it with lyrics I remember as "I'll never swim the Kern river, again.." Keep hiking and thanks for all these great videos and storytelling. Jan

Please consider providing lot of basic info like that in your next videos. Informations like - What you need to be aware of when you're alone, how to tackle animals if one shows up, how and where to dispose the cooking wastes and other edibles, how to find the perfect camping spot, what other details one need to check before choosing the camp spot - those kind of information will be helpful for beginners. @basecampchris Жыл бұрын
Your feet will sink in much more w/o snow shoes...if you are in deep snow. If there is a foot or less you don't really need them. Imagine 3 feet of snow and sinking up to your knees or more with every step.

When sleeping on snow or cold underground u need at least isolation with a R-8 value.
@basecampchris4 жыл бұрын
R8 will put you at -36℉ which is more than most people would ever need or pay for. An R4 or R5 would cover from 10 degrees to about -5 degrees, which would cover most normal winter camping. Anything less than -10 degrees camping is extreme conditions and requires appropriate gear to function and survive.
