This video is great Thanks justin. It's kinda semantics...but I remember my LL Coach teaching us to take 3 paces and 2 side steps. You show 2 and 4-5 side steps. I think I prefer 3-2 as it will establish a lead quicker. It also works really well with the step dive back distance. Again great video.

Not to knit pick but your second step with your left foot crossing over in front is what good pitchers are looking for to pick. Have you considered a rear crossover vs a front crossover?

Great point, as a pitcher i always had my first baseman watch for guys who did that and I would catch them in between steps. I was taught a little differently when leading.

So should you step off the base with your left foot first to prevent that?

Step with your left foot first. Not your right foot first.

Great advice, also I stagger my right foot about 2 inches behind my left foot so I dont trip over them while pivoting towards second.

Justin - I was taught the exact same way, but this is something that I’ve never understood, particularly as a left-handed first baseman. I know that every runner who has been coached on leading off has been taught to dive back towards the inside, back corner of the bag. But that’s because the first baseman is giving the runner the inside, back corner. I know I have to give the runner some part of the bag to avoid an obstruction call. But why don’t more first basemen just straddle the bag with their right foot on the baseline, back side of the bag and have their mitt target the inside, back corner of the bag? We’re taught that it is better to let the ball carry to place the tag. Why not have the pickoff throw targeted towards and “carry” right to the spot to which the runners are all taught to dive? (As to right-handed first basemen, I cannot speak intelligently.)

On the contrary a smart pitcher will take a signal from the catcher for the pick off in the middle of your feet crossing. Much harder to change direction when your feet are closest together. Always keep your stance wide so you can change direction as needed

Right handed pitcher, watch his feet. Has to pick his right heel up if he's making a throw to first. Picks up left foot if throwing home.

It should be left right 3 half shuffle paces. Why do people want to reinvent the wheel. Common sense. If I was coaching vs you or on the mound after your 1st or second step I'm already making a move to pick you off 😅

Information hardly anybody knows? Let's tap the breaks on that statement. Any base stealer would know this. Great instruction, however, for the dad coach.
