Transforming CO2: BASF's Role in the Flue2Chem Consortium's Innovative Journey

BASF is excited to be part of the UK Government funded Flue2Chem consortium of 17 partners with the aim of demonstrating how carbon emissions can be converted into sustainable materials for consumer products, such as cleaning products, looking at the specific chemical value chain of surfactants.
As part of the Flue2Chem consortium, BASF has developed a novel catalyst and process that have the potential to unlock a number of applications for the use of captured CO2 as a more sustainable raw material for producing chemicals for a net zero future.
Over the course of 20 months, our team worked to integrate cutting-edge R&D techniques and machine learning to pioneer an accelerated process for the development of new catalysts for the production of ethanol based on the sustainable utilization of captured CO2.
Ethanol is important because not only is it a key building block for making surfactants, but it is used to make many other useful chemicals with applications across the cosmetics, industrial, pharmaceutical sectors.
Looking ahead, BASF would like to continue building on the success of Flue2Chem. Further collaboration is needed to enable the processes developed to work at scale, creating new business models for industry across the value chain.
