If you want to engage the 1st gear without a mistake, it's better to have your palm facing to the left(say left front door) so that the gear lever doesn't ever go straight up & engage the 3rd gear by mistake! Note how the instructor while shifting the gear from 5th to reverse turns his palm in the opposite direction i.e to the right. In fact the proper way to shift the gear from 4th to 5th is also the same i.e. keep your palm facing to the right.
