Here in São Paulo (Brazil) we play almost by the same rules, I'm surprised to see that there is more in common than differences 😆 Some differences are: head, neck, groin and breasts are a "penalty" (the striker dies), and if you lose a leg you just pretend it is numb, no need to kneel

But even contacts in which the sword has slightly touched or skimmed the opponent without any power behind count as valid hits? Since such "hits" would't have caused any injuries, damage whatsoever this kind of LARPing won't ever deliver a valid simulation that could make someone develop sword fighting skills and experience. I would love to try LARPing just to know how a medieval battle might have been. Assuming a lot from a 2 minute video delivering that basics of rules. No game gives a simulation of “real combat” they all have rules that prevent injury, an important component of being real. There are rules for sufficient force and qualified strikes though. The details not given in this video as they are different in every game, and this is a “basics of combat” video. 🤷‍♂️

I like playing LARP, but everyone these days uses the most ultralight weapon they can. It's really ruined the experience for me. I think the rules need reviewed to stop this aspect of it because it's just too easy to flip a boffer around when it's ultralight, and imo it defeats the realism aspect too much. The combat dynamics have become boring to me because there is practically zero repercussion for throwing a sloppy shot because it's so lightweight that you can just zip it around immediately. That's not how a swordfight would work. It makes about as much sense as playing Beat Saber with only your wrists when you know fullwell the game is intended to be played with your full arm and full arm swings - why are you even playing it if you're just trying to skimp out on as many physically demanding aspects as possible?

As a counterpoint, I was at an SCA event, where they had a boffers list for kids who were too young for the rattan list but wanted to learn. I caught a teenager who had loaded his pvc with CONCRETE for 'the realism' and was beating up on a 7 year old girl. Yeah, he was reported, restrained, and prevented from taking part in ANY combat for a long time.The whole point of boffers is LIGHTEST TOUGH. If you feel the need to break bones on an unarmored opponent, maybe you don't belong in the sport. Go invest in some steel plate armor and pay your SCA dues like a grown up, and get waled on by a 300 lb guy wielding rattan. Let's see how you like the realism then.

It's just an aspect I don't like, and I based it around the established rules because imo it leans too far away from realism sometimes. @@lyllydd actually not all Boffer LARP is lightest touch. Belegarth, Dagorhir and Heartlight all have "sufficient force" requirements which require a bit more than just a touch, Bel at least also has weight minimums on boffers to push back on the ultralight weapons. While its certainly not as heavy as SCA Rattan weapons, it does require some body mechanics to avoid injuries similar to "tennis elbow."
