I used to build a combat ship covered in thin plates of armor. That ship has enough guns and enough salvage lasers. Early pirates are such a joke that I just salvage them as they keep plinking away at my armor

@@Ic0nGaming Salvage Laser is still effective in combat. Does more DPS than my 3 Iron Common Chainguns, the only drawback is that it's short range. Short range is not an issue, seeing as my ship is fast and can close the distance easily, plus it makes use of the unarmed slots in combat.

Enemy bosses that are immune to damage until their minions are down doesn't canonically make sense. Also a dirty gameplay mechanic if they're still able to attack you while you smash their nuisance subordinates. If you made it so that their minions have repair lasers and restore their shields then it'd at least make sense without the NPCs simply cheating.
