There's a feature you're missing here that makes finding crew, especially captains, a lot easier. In the strategic view (N), the sector listing at right has several tabs, including the crew tab, which shows you which crew are available at each station, including a quick view of the captain available (if any). Much faster than checking each station individually!

just started my 8th playthrough on the game always like to see other people's ways of playing, noticed in your last episode when the Pirates were attacking after the Ally ships took them out there was a couple of drops that you missed which are either good for upgrading your ship or for selling as easy cash along with the possibility of the pirate ships dropping random gold piles when they we're destroyed, I have a small starter ship I like to use that's not much larger than the Drone and doesn't require titanium to build a usually just slap a couple of mining lasers about 800 iron to build, and then I look for a captain with no skill class which is way cheaper and quite a bit easier to find usually after about an hour and a half I can usually have three of these little ships up and Mining and just jump from sector to sector and have them strip mine way faster and more efficient than having more lasers on one ship in my opinion at least, another thing that sometimes proves to be more cost-effective and quicker to get more generator energy is to buy one of the generator power boosters and stick it in a subsystem slot they increase your generated Power by a percentage usually how I end up getting away without building generators early game,
