Here is the part 7 of a series all about drum set chart reading. This series is geared towards beginning to intermediate players who already have basic drum set skills.
In this installment I play Now What, a big band chart with a floating modal feel. This type of feel can be approached in several ways and was made popular in the 1960's with modal jazz artists such as Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter.
The tune is by Mike Kamuf and It is from the book Sittin' in with the Big Band Volume 1.
I play the tune and then talk about my approach to this type of chart and floating pedal tone feel.
The drums used in this video are Craviotto stacked Private Reserve kit.
The sizes are
Bass Drum 20x15
Toms 10x8 and 12x8
Floor Tom 14x 14
The snare drum is a 14x 6.5 Nickel Over Brass Dialtune Snare
The Cymbals are:
21" 1950's K Ride
18" 1950's K crash/ride with rivets
16" Paiste Traditional Thin Crash
Masterwork 24" Swish/China with Rivets
Sabian 13" HH Regular Hi Hats
The Microphones are two Sennheiser MKH 800 overheads and an AKG D112 on the bass drum.

Cool Rick..nice job.... I was thinking Pat Metheny.. as well.. / love those rivets.. just got a Masterworks after hearing yours and your recommendation. ( I agree with your assessment). except the factory installed the rivets the concave side .. I play it the lip up.. so I had some extra ones and had to reinstall them - bc once you splay them ..its hard to get them back into shape..and re-splay them... even with a wire gauge and ballpeen..

Hi Will You can take a Dremel tool with the metal cutter wheel and cut off the bottom of the rivet. Hold it it place with needle nose pliers. You can then use them again or replace them.
