Basic Gold Amalgam Retort # recover Mercury

Here is a very Basic retort i found online more than a Decade ago. I thought it might be worth sharing as it was hard to find anything floating around that was similar and simple . I have not tried it out myself so it's entirely up to anyone out there if they want to try it out . Always remember to use safe practices , correct PPE , and perform these tasks in a well ventilated area away from people . In other words you do it at your own risk . Cheers Ned 👍

We used half a hollowed out potato upside down on the gold pan, over the fire. Amalgum inside, mercury would condense and cling inside the cool damp spud.

I hate to be the one to rain on your parade, but although the mercury will indeed be driven off your gold that glass bowl isn't going to catch enough mercury vapor 357C boiling point to keep your back yard and sand from becoming a toxic waste site. If you want to recover the Mercury make a retort out of steel pipe and cool the discharge side with a wet rag.

Well , i said it was basic . As for poisoning my back yard , i don't think so , i used to play with this stuff when i was a kid , handle it etc . Same as Asbestos , still cut and remove that stuff all the time , i'm now 68 had a pretty good run . You know the worlds full of KARENS AND CRY BABIES , even our Government Bureaucracies are full of them . There's more deadly poison comes out of your Deisel 4x4 exhaust pipe . and there's millions of those passing you by everyday . People need a reality check . Toxic waste site indeed .!!!!

@@GrooberNedJardine I'm a decade older than you and I played with mercury, asbestos, lead and all sorts of things that would cause panic now. I have made a lot of stupid mistakes, and hoped to spare others. I didn't say you shouldn't be doing it but I do say you are living in a magical reality if you think mercury is going to condense on that glass bowl. Funny thing about mercury poisoning is it doesn't effect you right away, it likes to do it's damage over time. Since you are putting this out for everyone to watch you should be aware that people are going to do what you are doing.

Where i prospect the ground rocks abound with Cinnabar , and about 4 years ago a massive bushfire went through it all , and i would say released thousands of tons of Mercury vapour into the air , no one says anything about that , plus the US and other countries threw millions of curly wurley light bulbs into landfill filled with Mercury vapour , no one says anything about that . The trouble is that Authorities tend to strain at a Gnat and yet they swallow a Camel . The amount of Mercury vapour off a tiny piece of Amalgam would be almost non existent , and if you read my description i advised people not to do it , but if they do , they do it at their own risk . And that was just a Disclaimer for the misguided Karems and crybabies that our world is full of today . People who live in Bolivia have shops that sole purpose is for buying gold , and they burn Amalgam off in dozens of shops in towns with vent hoods that go out into the streets and falls on passers by . Those sorts of practises surely need to cease , but as you say their would not be hardly a miniscule of Mecury recovered off the device featured in my video . A commenter told me of a better device for recovering your Merc which entailed a metal gold pan a hollowed out potatoe and a fire , you might like to go back to the video and read his comment , and bother him with trivialities .
