Hello Aaron/Marc, I had the same problem. I wanted to change the bridge pickup of my Ibanez SA 120 for a DiMarzio PAF Pro (DP-151), but the schematics from the Ibanez site are not correct. Luckily I found your instruction video. The wiring of the SA 120 is exactly the same as that of the RG7321. Ibanez uses a blue wire which is the same as the standard green wire of most other pickup branches. It is good to check the wiring and soldering on most Ibanez guitars, because it is mostly done in a very sloppy way and most of the wires are much too long. Nevertheless the quality of the used electronic parts is good. Thanks again for your good work, it was very helpful for me. Greetz, Hans (The Netherlands) Ps. The SA 120 is a great guitar for little money, It’s a pity that they don’t make them anymore!

Hi Marc, I am swapping my pickups from my Ibanez rgt42 which has the exact same wiring in this video for a set of emg’s with solderless electronics. the thing what I’m trying to do is turn my 5 way switch into a 3 way switch, basically wiring only position 1, 3 and 5 and leaving the rest unwired since emg’s cant be coil tapped. Will the whole construction work if I wire only the Z,A,D and X palls of the switch and leave the rest of them unwired? I would love to hear your opinion on this and how to do better since it’s my first time swapping pickups. Btw great video, helped me clarify some questions ^^
@aaronstonebeat2 жыл бұрын
Yes it would work but when I work it out I get this picture: - Hot of the bridge goes to A - Hot of the neck goes to C - The grounds go to ground, of course ;-) - D goes to the output via volume and tone controls. All of the other wiring can be ignored/left out. - Then in positions 1 and 2 you have the bridge pickup - In position 3 you have both - In positions 4 and 5 you have the neck pickup.

I remember my own surprise when I found this 'reversed' connenction. I also seem to remember the color code was actually what Ibanez used.at one time. Apparently they used pickups wound in the same direction and reversed the connections and the polarity of the magnets for one of the pickups. But things may change. If you reverse the connection of one of the pickups you put it out of phase with respect to the other one; so if your guitar sounds alright the way it is be sure to leave it that way.

Thanks for sharing this. VERY helpful to understand this setup. Question: I have a spare Fender TBX tone pot laying around. Will replacing the existing 500k pot with the TBX help achieve more tonal variation, or will it screw things up? Thanks again.
@aaronstonebeat11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I'd say give it a try. One half works as a normal tone control (be it that it is 250K in stead of 500) and the other half takes away some bass frequencies; it is not difficult to hook up. And if you don't like it you can put the original back in.

@SlapTabs Maybe the no. V video (Switches Fat Strat Coil Split) can help you? It's designed for 1 humbucker and 2 single coils but if you switch the neck pickup for a humbucker you're done. I wonder if an additional coil split is possible with this swtich. I “wonder” because my brain’s just sending me “error” and “overload” messages even just trying to think about that wiring.
@aaronstonebeat3 ай бұрын
Not easily, the way I see it. But you could use a push/pull pot or an extra mini switch to connect W and Z to ground. That would turn the bridge pickup in a single coil in postition 1, both pickups in position 3 (same as 2 then) and the neck pickup in position 5. Don't sue me if I made a mistake here 😉 It would be relatively easy to try though.
