Hello my name is Nick, I have my own style of puppetry, I grew up with a unique mouth. So when I speak, it sounds like I can’t speak, so what I do is, make it look like my characters are singing. I just use my favorite songs.

How can I turn a regular old stuffed animal into a puppet with a movable mouth? I have an old "Animal" stuffed animal id like to transform with puppet rods and a mouth

May I ask about the inside of Wally... What material did you use for the mouthplate? A flexible plastic, thin EVA foam, or thick felt? Are the top and bottom mouthplates hinged in the back or free floating, besides being glued to the mouth fabric? I noticed some form and shaping around the edge of the mouthplate rim (lip)? Was wondering if foam was used for this area? Thanks! I am looking for that sweet spot between fully expressive face but preserve minimal structure in the mouth. A puppet with minimal skeletal structure (foam) provides amazing expressive control...once learned! Loving your videos and learning much from the subtle manipulation. Thanks again for sharing.

Hello! I'll try to answer the best I can! The pattern for Wally isn't all my own, I built him from a modified version of Project Puppet's Glorified Sock Puppet pattern that I've been using (and loving) for years. The puppet's mouthplate is made from a matboard (typically used for photo framing) and is not actually flexible at all, with a faux suede for the visible/red part of his mouth. The board is attached to that red fabric, with no other hinging at all. There is no foam whatsoever inside the puppet, his "Smile Lines" at the corner of his mouth, and his lip-line all happen organically when installing the mouthplate into the puppet.

@@insidemybraincomedy I read your reply with a big grin on my face! Last week, after putting it off for a year, I took the plunge and got the Glorified Sock Puppet pattern for a simple "carry anywhere" puppet. Up until now, I've been making my puppets from scratch (clay model, foam patterns, etc....Whew!! Time consuming.), but I loved the simplicity/flexibility of the glorified sock puppet. I had just finished making a puppet using the pattern and started thinking how I could modify it ... the next day I stumbled onto your channel. :-) After seeing your puppet walk-around videos, I immediately grabbed my iPhone and did some tests to see if I could operate an iPhone while manipulating a hand puppet (eye focus, etc.). Since I can't hold rod arms and the camera, I figured that I could hide tiny neodymium (earth) magnets under the fabric and in the wrists to lock the dangling hands in a natural position while my free hand is operating the iPhone. Thanks for the reply and sharing your puppet skills on KZbin. I won't say how many times I re-re-re-re....re-watched the Wally Dentist video. ;-) I was even analyzing how you used your knuckle for the bridge of the nose and expression changes.

Hello :) I recently got a rod puppet. Its a brown dog, with red and green checkered shirt, beige trousers and a pair of red converse.. You say the eyes are a good focus point, but how do I make that work, if my dude has a pair of red glasses on?
@insidemybraincomedy2 жыл бұрын
The same rules apply, as long as the puppet has a good eye focus. Try using the bridge of his glasses as your center, when that's pointed at someone that's where he should appear to be looking.

Great video so as a puppeteer does it really matter if you move your mouth? I just recently got my first ever puppet.
@insidemybraincomedy7 ай бұрын
Depends on what you're going for! Puppeteers don't typically appear with their puppet onscreen/onstage, so you can move your mouth as much as needed to make the character's voice happen. Ventriloquists don't move their lips, to help with the illusion that there are two beings sharing the stage. I use the two skills interchangeably quite regularly, but as long as the character is engaging no one really cares if your lips move or not. Best of luck!
