Wow.. When I first began to review the "Verbs of Motion" (which I never could remember and didn't completely understand) I thought " This is hopeless! :-( BUT Olga has a way of nurturing the concepts and repeating the essential ideas over and over. Sometimes she reinforces a lesson point in the examples of other concepts. It is very clever and effective. I will need to review all of these videos but, at this moment, for a brief second, I think I know this pretty well. Thank you Olga.. I would hope we all occasionally reward Olga with a visit to PayPal in addition to our grateful words..

Thanks for video!! Let me see if I understood (min 9:29) они пошли в школу = they went to the school (for example, this morning, yesterday). You just point out to the fact that they went to school at a specific moment (they're still in school) они ходили в школу = they used to go to school (an action that they used to do in the past, they're not in school anymore) Am I right?
@AmazingRussian
@AmazingRussian 5 жыл бұрын
Mara J , они пошли в школу - they began the movement in one direction; they are not in school yet, still on their way to school. Ходили в школу (вчера, утром) - they were in school, but they are already back home.

Hi. At 3:53 you say that ходил is "going there and coming back:". Does that mean on the way back, or that they have come back? Because at 7:37 you write that cходил means "going there and coming back", Does that mean that they have arrived back? I'm confused.
@AmazingRussian
@AmazingRussian 6 жыл бұрын
Glen, both ходил and сходил mean "went there and came back". The difference is how the speaker sees the action. In the first case (ходил), the focus is on the fact - he did go there. In the second (сходил) - the focus is on the result - he did it. In this video, the perfective verb сходить is not covered, but just mentioned (you can see it in the table in the blue cell). To differentiate between these two verbs you need better control over the verbal aspect, which comes with practice. Does it all make sense? Do not hesitate to ask questions to clear up your confusion. It is a difficult concept, and it takes time and practice. Respectfully,
@tofinoguy

Thank you. I've seen several sources, including Wade, state that the prefix 'c' in verbs of motion means to "come down from " or "to step off". Am I understanding them correctly?
@AmazingRussian
@AmazingRussian 6 жыл бұрын
Glen MacPherson , not really. Verbs of motion with prefixes are different. Each prefix has a specific meaning. However, some prefixes are used to form perfective verbs, and they do not carry any meanings. Here is the link about imperfective-perfective verbs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6nRk2VvlsZ5abM
@russiangrammar
@russiangrammar 6 жыл бұрын
If you don't mind my chiming in - с- is tricky because it can be used in two ways. 1) As you saw in Wade, it can be used as a directional prefix (like при-, у-, and others) to make imperfective/perfective pairs with the meaning 'going down, stepping off,' like сходить/сойти: Не падали самолеты, не сходили с рельсов поезда.. = The planes didn't fall, the trains didn't go off the rails.. (imperf) Мы сошли с поезда в Красноуфимске = We got off the train in Krasnoufimsk. (perf) 2) C- also has a second, distinct usage: with multidirectionals like ходить, it can make perfectives (only - not imperfectives!) with the sense of a completed round trip, often (as Olga mentions) in the context where there's a result. Она сходила за газетой. = She went to fetch the newspaper. (she's now back, with the paper) The difference between Вчера мы ходили на концерт. and Она сходила за билетами. is subtle - Wade writes about it in point 337. But most books don't go into this before upper levels. If your course hasn't covered prefixes like при-, у, etc., I wouldn't worry about this too much yet. :)

do you use сходить in sentences? i try to understand the function of this verb, i searched on internet and i still cant get it. so as i know ходить means going somewhere on foot and it is multidirectional verb. when i say я ходил в школу it means i went to school and i came back, i mean the action is finished, i am not in the school anymore, right? thats what i understood. but what is the difference if i say я сходил в школу ? in one website i found that сходил you went there only once, thats it. not repeated action. but as far as i know for such situations i should say я пошёл в школу right? it is just like math problem, i dont get it right
@AmazingRussian
@AmazingRussian 3 жыл бұрын
Я пошёл - I am on the way to. Я ходил - fact; I was there, not any more there. Я сходил - I was there once. The shortest explanation of the situation. I hope it makes sense.

What the teacher refers to as multidirectional, is not really that, it is more that the travel is repeated or habitual. It does not suggest that the person or vehicle travels back from the destination.

Good videos but please translate better. In 12:14 you didnt translate word раньше that means "earlier". We dont know what that means so we need litterely be translated.

The word раньше is in the active vocabulary in the very beginning Russian. This video is the third-semester Russian course. If you want to understand everything, you should watch the videos in sequence. It’s impossible to translate every single word in the video, and most importantly, not necessary. With best wishes.

@@AmazingRussian Почему вы решили, что имелось ввиду именно опоздал, а не опаздывал? Здесь же оба варианта возможны, только смысл будет разный.
