This is one of the best intro vids for setting up the cup car...to be honest once you do this you can just learn how to drive the car which takes a bit of time. Top notch 👍🏻

Hey Shaun, one recommendation for you and for others, rather than going entirely off tire temp readings (which is useful as well of course) a good idea for beginners is to just go ahead and make big changes on one area of the car and just see how it feels. If you like what it feels like and you go faster great, now try to make a change the complete opposite end of the spectrum. The only way to really learn handling tuning is to make huge jumps and then narrow it down from there based on the immediately obvious positive or negative feedback. Also as you probably saw you weren't getting your middle and outside temps to change, add a full degree more negative camber, you want an even temp spread across the tire, in Supercup they say about a 10-15 degree increments across the tire.
@Merto6
@Merto6 7 жыл бұрын
No matter what you do the mid and inside temps will be close and the outside will be a lot lower. Just how the shitty iracing tire model works.
@Alexhoning
@Alexhoning 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah sorry I said that wrong, you're right the iRacing tire model has it's own characteristics but the goal is to get an even step of temp across the tire lowest outside to hottest inside in about 20-degree increments. At least that's what they look for on real life GT3 cup cars and what i would hope to shoot for in a sim as good as iRacing despite it's minor tire model faults here and there.
@Merto6
@Merto6 7 жыл бұрын
they are not minor it's absolutely impossible to get these 20° increments

As somebody who's only gotten into simracing in the past couple of months and knows next to nothing about how cars work, this was very easy to follow.

Great Video... Over inflation would cause the middle to read higher than both the outside and inside. Also have to be careful going to low on tire pressure as this causes additional heat buildup. I haven't determined the temp these tires work best at yet. With iRacing it seems that cooler is better (175 F vs 195 aF). Additionally the baseline camber is fairly high, which also affects the inside temp and wear. I had to reduce camber to improve the braking. Adjusting the toe-in on the front significantly improved turn in, eliminating the under steer. One neat thing is the lock up indicator on the steering. The lights on the right and left indicate which wheels are looking under heavy braking. You can adjust while on track to get the bias dialed in.

you have no idea how much i needed this. dropping temps to get outside tyre temps higher, like, how obvious is that and yet i still missed it completely. self learning tuning is not a good idea thanks

My first look into Setup. Wonderful good sense; thanks! *--ben* p.s. 4:12 _"Touchy under braking"_ ... I found 911 to be squirmy a number of times! Which is why this old dog grabbed it as a total n00b: to see what squirelly is all about. My entry into the mechanics of Setup for racing!

Cheers Shaun, I just moved into one of these and setups confuse me. Just got into the iracing all the kids are on about, folding race seat a dk2 and a g29. Proper poor mans setup .The shifters crap so I ditched it, and the chair hurts my legs. On the positive the races are only 20 minutes long and I’m loving it.

Hey Shaun. The best thing in your case to go faster would be to place your shifter way more close to the wheel. This car has a paddle-shifter for real and it´s an advantage, but without ABS and no need for late trailbreak-shifting a sequential can do fine, but it must be very near. I reduced the wheel-distance from my HE sequential shifter from 6 to 3 inches today (even i have paddles), because the 6 inches are to much of a disadvantage already with DD-wheel and the 3 inches are at least more close to the modern Rallye-cars with this one-paddle-sequential-shifter making it even. And the nob of my CSS just for h-shifting is 5 inches away from the wheel. Watch old LMP- or F1-cars with h-shifter. They did it as well:)

Very well done. The 911s though a somewhat of a different feeling car, though I guess getting into weight transfer and rear spring rates and heavy front bias to take advantage of the engine being behind the rear axle is bit of an advanced topic. Though in this particular car you should be aiming to maximize you breaking (no trail breaking on 911s) corner entry and exit, the car will want to rotate mid corner a bit but this forces to slowly jump on the power earlier than you would on a mid engine or front engine car - and that is what 911s are about. Until Areo takes over.... Great job - thumbs up man.

Great video Shaun many thanks for making the effort. Just a point on racing that track, personally after the first turn I go further out to the right which then leads to a straighter line through the second... Sorry not wanting to teach you anything because I'm a long way from being a good driver. Just something that caught my eye. :). Always enjoy your videos. Cheers

Awesome info Shaun! Thank you so much for your time and efforts! I have found the engineer in Pcars2 has been a big help for learning what to change. My wish is that the developers take the time to make sure that the default setups are a bit more competitive out of the box. I think if the default setups were a little more competitive out of the box with fewer changes needed for competent drivers it would just make better racing. And then really work on a crew chief/spotter coop mode for competitive and broadcast racing. The second player spots, dose a pit stop "puzzle" and makes settings changes and tire changes. Mouse clicking on lug nuts and key banging on the space bar. ;) Developers! I have a lot of ideas on where to go with Co/op crew chief in Sim Racing Titles! Contact me! And a proof of concept, don't go stealing my ideas ;) Or do and make Sim racing the top game purchases of 2018. Drivers and Crew Chiefs wanted! I mean it writes itself! Really be there for your favorite driver! Just saying! Rant over!

The first thing u said contradicts what I have learned. Which is: u only increase tire pressure when BOTH outside tire edges are hotter and "wearer" than the middle. And u only decrease it when both outsides of the same tire are colder and less wear then the middle. Can some1 explain to me plz y he said and did that? Car setups to me is harder than rocket since.

Shaun these tire temps are absolutely meaningless. The tire wear is a little bit better but still lacks the precision to do any tunning.
