This bread checks all the right boxes for me: fast to mix, easy to knead by hand, and screamingly delicious to eat. When completely cool, the bread can be sliced very thinly. Your comments are welcome! Ingredients listed below.
Basic White Bread
Ingredients for 1 8- or 9-inch loaf (double the recipe for 2 loaves)
1/3 cup warm (110°F) water
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup lukewarm milk (scalded and then cooled)
1 1/2 tablespoons shortening
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Melted butter for brushing
Bake 425°F 25-30 minutes. Cool completely before slicing.
