It’s like “yes sunsets happen every evening, but *this particular* sunset has never happened before! The clouds were different and the mix of pink and orange were different!” Sure the same types of flowers may bloom every year but the flowers that bloom this year aren’t the exact same flowers that bloomed last year, therefore it’s entirely unique and never seen before and totally amazeballs yo.

Apparently the actual reason the Scottish unicorn's chained up on the UK coat of arms is because in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, unicorns weren't seen as feminine or even magical, they were just an insanely rare and dangerous animal that would absolutely wreck you if you ever came across it; less pretty horses to hang out with princesses and more like a wild bull but even worse. There's a bunch of faiey tales about people having to survive encounters with wild unicorns, and the whole thing about virgins taming them (which sort of became their defining trait later on) started out as Christian symbolism about how being pure and godly meant you could tame something as scary as a unicorn. The fact that the unicorn is chained up and the lion isn't is less about Scotland being subjugated and more that people back then just saw unicorns as being much more dangerous than lions.

So the original historical account of a unicorn describes it as exactly what a rhinoceros is today, but because mideival artists were comically bad at drawing animals, as has been memed on nowadays, they drew a horse, kinda like all those other horses they've drawn, but with a horn on its head because the book said so. The book also said it had "the feet of an elephant" but, again, mideival European art nerd wouldn't know what an elephant is, so they just put a horn on a horse and the legend grew from there. The good news is that this means the only historically accurate unicorn is whatever the fuck you want to draw it as.

I have also heard that unicorns, much like other horn-based mythical creatures such as the jackalope, may have been the result of an animal with keratosis or a cutaneous horn or something of that nature. Either the subject in question had a particularly large one or it was fairly small and grew with each retelling of the story.

Some early art though does look a lot like a rhinoceros. It's my understanding that the horse-like art didn't start appearing until quite a bit later, but maybe my memory is off. How dangerous/fierce they were regarded in most early tales also connects them to rhinos.

In my setting I decided to run completely wild with their mythical connection to virgins, and made them massive cockblockers. They'd become attached to some poor virgin and "protect their chastity" regardless of what that person wanted. Unicorns were considered a huge pest, and nobles would hire adventurers to chase off the annoying horned horse that was keeping their heir from getting married. This also started in 4e where Unicorns were Fey.

I love the idea of the party randomly being in a unicorn’s forest without knowing it while traveling and then having all these effects take hold and never have them find out why without some serious good rolls or a lot of investigation/research. Just wanted to put my favorite unicorn interaction I read in a story here. In this world there are like three kinds of magic, demonic magic, not relevant to the story, a form of academic magic that basically uses equations and such to make magic do precisely what you want and nothing more or less, and the wild magic which is easier to use, but you dont know how it will carry out your request. Also you will have to agree to pay a specific price for every spell. Could be forgiving an enemy, or rescuing a cat in a tree, or planting some flowers, maybe overthrowing an evil empire, but you have to agree AND perform the payment or else bad things happen. The main character discovers he has the wild magic while living in a mage city that is REALLY against that style so he has to flee for his life. He uses the wild magic to basically ask for help escaping and he gets sent a unicorn that says "I will take you to safety, but there is a price. We are bound together for a year. If you are at any point during said year not chaste and celibate, i will have to kill you." They spend the next few books partnered together as crazy stuff goes down, he meets an entire brotherhood of elven unicorn knights he works with, and he eventually fully serves the year. They stay friends but are no longer partners as his unicorn buddy is well aware he is intending to get involved with someone and not so eager to remain chaste and celibate forever. :p

In my Kingmaker 2e game I was able to get a unicorn for a player who wanted one as a mount he said he wanted one for some years my PC was building a little forest for Fey and animals called Forever Green so my PC was able to hook the player up with a new mount

In the specific context of the British monarchy the lion and unicorn don't refer to England and Scotland. Rather the lion represents the king's secular role as King of the United Kingdom, while the unicorn represents the king's religions role as head of the Church of England. Don't know what the deal with the chains is, though.

“Everywhere else, it’s the good and neutral guys in danger.” We really saw this play out in a Kingmaker game I played in. The GM ran the same campaign plan across two groups simultaneously, and was horrified to find out the good party were way more murderous than the party I was in of AnCap dirtbags. The problem it turns out is that good characters feel compelled to beef with evil creatures, whereas characters with no moral compass can parlay with anyone if it profits them. “These violent and stupid ogres are robbing people along this road, you must fight to the death.” “Actually, when their health is low, we offer to spare them and teach them about tollbooths in exchange for a cut.” “This naga is scamming a tribe of kobolds into a murder cult.” “Sounds profitable, can we get her to strike a martial/labor alliance with our city?” “Children in your caravan have gone missing, eaten by a dreadful hag your followers want killed.” “We wish to ask her what quota of children we’d need to look the other way and allow to ‘go missing’ in commission for her services as an alchemical consultant-“ “Oh COME ON” Like in addition to these real examples, we eventually had a Barghaest wearing a Disguise Self hat to masquerade as a dog as one of our advisors, a giant cyclopian Sorceror my character had adopted to exploit as an enforcer, an Aranea he was on the cusp of becoming romantically entangled with out of respect for her mercantile principles, and probably others I’m forgetting. It betrayed us almost immediately and we had to put it down, but we even tried to ally with a redcap. The NPC we got along with the worst was the dryad the module explicitly expected players to ally with because it also instructed that she should start as a combat encounter so she refused to parlay at all at offset and my character never stopped being annoyed she was totally unreasonable till we had her down to half health

I've been planning on making a Fey paladin who was killed in the past but revived by a unicorn funnily enough. It granted him it's horn and that's what keeps him alive, and without it he'll die again. The horn is still connected to the unicorn though, so it'll go back to the unicorn if it gets separated from his body. The unicorn suffers no ill effects from this arrangement. All I need is a name for the unicorn.

Question regarding a plot hook, you might know you might not, but with them knowing everything going on in their controlled area, is the curse cure that impacts good-aligned creatures suppressed automatically or intentionally? Hell of a plot hook, rescuing (or I suppose using) a cursed good creature that's captive and being used to locate unicorn territories for hunting
