When i saw that this was a dnd 5e arcane spell years ago being a thing, I litterally asked myself “…who in the right mind would actually pick this spell?”.

We played in a Kingmaker game with a truly bizarre monk that the DM and I (another player) decided must have been a flumph that forgot what he was.

I had a party with some murder hobos in it and wanted them to stop killing anything that was even slightly non humanoid. Long story short, they ended up in a drunken cave system full of Flumphs. A couple players started killing a few after some snarky dialogue, and then after all the flumphs had run off or died, turns out the flumphs were feeding on the thoughts and feelings Kua-Toa that were down there. A new evil god of the ocean was raised from a dragon turtle corpse, and the simple go clear a cave mission got ALOT harder.

One of my characters was an Aberrant Soul sorcerer who was raised by flumphs. She was a drow who was abandoned as a baby due to being born weak, but some flumphs found her and brought her up as best they could for a humanoid. Now she's a grown adventurer who still prefers to talk telepathically and shows emotions by using Presdigitation to change skin/eye/hair colors.

I too felt betrayed by Larian when I found out the flumph mating rituals book was real. They can't stop talking about how EVERYTHING ELSE fucks. But as soon as it comes to the topic of wholesome flumph courtship they deny us.

I have used a couple of Elder Evils in my campaign. First, Atropus, as the Final Boss. Basically, the BBEG was an entitled demigod that "steers" Atropus towards the world, "summoning" it. What's funnier than killing a Dragon? Seeing how it raises as a zombie/skeleton the next round ready for round 2. Also Father Llymic/Ghulurak (you can't convince me that they aren't the same, fight me) as a piece of worldbuilding. So, a lot of NPCs I used were PCs/NPCs from other games. For one, however, I said it was the same. He basically traveled dimensions and was used as a proxy to fight Father Llymic. Now, he is the seal that keeps Father Llymic in that mountain. The PCs could try and fight Father Llymic to free the NPC, but they thought better than to risk failure.

This spell being changed in such a fundamentally bullshit way from 3.5 is undeniable proof that 5e is a broken piece of crap. In 3.5 the spell had a duration of 1 hour/level, meaning at the level when you get access to the spell you get 9 hours, that’s enough to do something moderately significant, like conduct a short heist without needing a disguise. But 5e proves once again that it’s the Civilization 6 of RPG’s.

So, what I learned from this is that if I ever play an Aberrant Mind Sorceror, a Soulknife Rogue, a Psi Warrior Fighter, any race with Psionics, any race with Telepathy and/or Telekinesis, or any character with the Telekinesis and/or Telepathy Feat- a Flumph is my new bestest buddy. Yay!

I like how we have internal combustion engines and robots in DnD but we're still not allowed to have guns.
