The Greeks voted for their spendaholic politicians who increased expenditure on white elephants, reduce retirement age, increased welfare and pensions with out thinking about where the money will come from, oh and increased borrowing, you get the government you voted for, my advice to them would be lower taxes, cut regulation, privatize industry under state ownership, get out of the EU, adopt sound money backed by gold and declare free trade with every nation on earth, keep very low minimum amount of taxes, a fixed tax ideally to support disabled people, widows with out partners/family to support them- this is Singapore, Hong Kong and the old US model before FDR become president and cursed the nation with interventionism, these societies succeeded. Greece doesn't need the EU or the Euro if they get their economic house in order.

I like Don B, he really stood his ground with that British chap who was a little confused about state sponsored monopoly and really great efficient dynamic market players, Google has not been sponsored by the state and if they falter to satisfy consumers than a competitor will come and take its slice of pie just the way they did to Altavista, search.com, Yahoo etc.

When I see Greece reminds me of my country. What I fear is that in my country Chile, we are moving to a social crisis that is generating an economic crisis and institutional instability. The main reason is dissatisfaction with the economic model, radicalization and manipulation of leftist groups. People have begun to demand rights as a welfare state that is already generating public debt, this coupled with a political class that has lost credibility, which consumes a high percentage of taxes for their own benefit and vote buying. Radical reforms from the government to intervene the economy through taxation, spread the wealth in the style of Robin Hood, an unclear educational reform raising hatred of profit and the private model, free education from primary to university at the expense of taxpayers, paternalism policies requiring a forced behavior of citizens as consumers towards a supposed truth about as healthy and politically correct. A political opposition divided, the division of the country again in extreme left and right. In short, instability is growing since the beginning of the Michell Bachelet's government "LaNueva Mayoria" similar to the "Unidad Popular" of Salvador Allende. ¿Will history repeat in Chile? I hope not but i fear it...

The data for 2014: 1. The United States GDP (for all goods and services) is about $17.2 trillion. 2. The US national debt is about $17.6 trillion. 3. Thus, the debt-to-GDP ratio is about 101%. From this point of view, there is no America debt crisis.

There is a debt crisis. But the crisis is due to an inherent problem involving banks and the system they promote.

paul krugman. yes, he is the one who knows the solution. and the solution is "print".
@marutanray11 жыл бұрын
Krugman's most recent idea is not "print" but "mint" the 1 Trillion Gazzzzilion dollar coin. That will bring prosperity to all. Minting doesnt cause inflation according to Krugman, because the coin will never be circulated, only exchanged for cash at the federal reserve, just a simple accounting entry. And you know what they do not even need to mint the coin, they just need to say that they minted a coin! Those are all Krugman's ideas - my small brain cannot conceive such ideas!

The right thing to do is to repudiate, to officially declare bankruptcy and let the chips fall where they may. Allow whatever bankruptcies arise to go bankrupt without bailouts of any kind, most emphatically including banks. They won't be "too big" any more. Deregulate the economy and let the free market put things back together. It would take a year and a half and you would have full employment and a steady, decent growth rate. Of course they won't do that.

I want the people outside Greece that a huge part of the population are not free loaders, work really hard and are ASHAMED of what happened. They understand the position of the lenders and our responsibility. Too bad it is always this middle class producing the wealth in this country always footing the bill.

It's 2016 and nothing has changed. I would be surprised if the US manages to balance its book anytime in the near future. They're too far down that "progressivism" and blame-the rich yada yada road to make a turn for good.

You did a pretty good job of showing the problem...but much of the words from the talking heads was rehashed, pooled ignorance. Most of the contributors seemed to think that if they talked enough, that their words would eventually mean somthing. Sorry, not! Your one contributor who knew what the solution was, was largely ignored. Government NEVER created long term demand.

We had the chance of a lifetime to become a true European country instead of a Balcan country in the fringes of the continent. The economy before that was very closed, very regulated with huge import taxes. I didnt want to believe that this is the limit of what we are able to do. Now who knows. I mean whenever Greece is mentioned is for all the wrong reasons. I mean Greece? My country? How did we allow this to happen? Depression sinks in.

Nickos1b: Sorry for your country. The irony is when your politicians showed muscle against Macedonia, they led own people to poverty. Using nationalism and hatred, are just cover of the failure of politicians. That is the tragedy of Balkans, the leaders tried to make ideal societies at someone else expense usually by blood. However, my country goes to the same direction as your. I am frightened when governments plays as saint, at someone else expense, usually middle class citizens and private sector.

Ugh, the anti-capitalist guy is annoying and clueless. He doesn't refute the arguments, simply sets up a strawman and hopes nobody will notice. Only government intervention can keep monopoly power going for an indefinite amount of time and only governments can bail out banks that make stupid business decisions after regulating small players out of the market. If you are stupid enough to blame capitalism for the current issues I feel sorry for you as you have absolutely no hope.

I love what all these people say, the fancy theories some have developed while going to school for too long. I can only think to myself that we are all so stupid it's good we do not live forever. Cause if we did we would sooner or later realize how ridiculous it all is and commit suicide anyway. Long live cheap oil, too bad it's almost over, I hope I can enjoy a few more holidays before it runs out.
