How To Sit The Canter Using Your Seat | In this video I will explain how I use my seat to stay in the saddle in canter. The one thing you do NOT want to do is "sit still" as the seat of the rider is very active when cantering on a horse. How you sit the canter will have a great effect on how balanced you are in the saddle. Cantering on a horse can be a scary experience for some people but if you have an understanding of what you should be doing with your seat you will find it much easier. I show you some cantering tips which will help you find your balance.

I hope this video helps you to understand that cantering on a horse is an ACTIVE process for the rider and "sitting still" is probably the worse thing you could do. Thank you for watching.

i have cantered before a tiny little bit in an arena, like maybe for 4 or 5 strides then i would lose my footing or my balance and have to stop. I watched this video yesterday, knowing i would be riding today, trying to muster up the courage to go outside and really canter. This video was so incredibly helpful, knowing how my hips are supposed to move and even though it wasn't mentioned, how my feet should be so my foot doesnt slip out of the stirrup (3 mo. out from a broken ankle, foot keeps slipping out) . It was helpful to know how my arms should be fluid in the elbow too, although i did pull back a lot still bc of fear and to get her to slow downt to stop...but i kept going, out in the long field, and Tweed gave me a lot of patience and a lot of trials and finally...i started cantering naturally with my hips. I didn't realize they would be turned a bit, as well as my shoulders...i thought i was doing something wrong, but i gave in to that bc i didn't really have a choice...if i tried to sit perfectly straight hipped, i would be off balance and almost fall off. So once i gave into her body movements, and just let go...we cantered for a good distance and it wasn't bumpy or anything. It was like we were the same body...so cool!!! Thank you for giving me great direction to give me the confidence to try to canter with one of the most amazing horses in the world, Tweed

Rebel is such a good boy!! He's very balanced and gorgeous. You explained sitting at the Canter very well. In Canada or North America I should say, we have two schools which never made sense to me, the Hunter/Jumpers and Dressage. I was trained since early childhood in the Hunter/Jumper world and it frustrated me because they teach you to be ahead of the vertical most of the time which causes the horses to be hallow and not relaxed or on the bit. And they don't do enough work on the flat for horse and or rider. You see a lot of bums in the air and horse's noses in the air, falling in around corners, leaning on the forehand etc... I always felt better at the vertical, sitting in the saddle and going with the motion as we do in dressage and it's correct all around for everyone. What helped me to really get that deep quiet seat was no stirrups.... a lot! And letting my stirrups down 4 holes! lol Great advice, your position is spot on and it shows in Rebel!! Thank you!!

Everything you do resonates with me, and especially the sitting trot helped me so much. I usually feel like a bouncing potato. There are two horses near where I live and the lady that owns them has said that I'm welcome to visit and ride if I want, but I don't know these horses, and it's been ages since I rode last time. I will try to get to know them better, ask about them and always get off if I don't feel safe. Your videos really help me to "reconnect" with what I used to know. Thank you so much.

So good. I shall try to follow. Your explanations are so clear. I love your saying to put your weight at 6 o’clock for a half halt! First I’ve understood that. Leg gets horse forward, seat to balance. Reins if horse doesn’t respond. Am I right? I r been struggling with dressage since I was 80. Almost 81. Now I’m 82. (I didn’t ride for forty years!)

At 60 yrs old I started to take lessons again. My coach asked me to canter in a circle. I did a terrible job after not cantering for a while ( my canter does need work). First off I was shocked at this horse's canter it was so jarring. Long story short I pulled a back muscle and now I'm out of commission for a while. I have a beautiful warmblood that unfortunately is not sound anymore. I loved his canter...not that my canter doesn't need work it does. I need a horse to ride so I can practice.

Hello! thank you so much for posting this, when i started cantering i was taught to sit all the time, and im still at that point, ive had really nice canters and im not horrible at it at all, i just lack the confidence. I was wondering, is it harder to sit in canter or be in a two-point position? I know sitting requires more core muscle engagement, but i wasn't sure whether sitting or 'standing' was easier.

I have been working on the canter and was told that my horse breaks down in the trot in the back end but is cantering in the front. It feels to me as if her back end falls out and is stumbling for a second. But that's when she has had the habit of bucking from the shoulder. As if she gets out of balance when this happens which causes this bucking quirk. She told me to work on just trotting, and then transition into the canter for a few strides, then break into a trot. Back and forth doing this. What are your thoughts? She is a 21 yr old Arab 15.1 hands.

I'm not sure Ross. I had to figure this out for myself as no one told me and I don't want others to struggle as I did. That's my motivation for my videos anyway 🙂

@@BasicHorseTraining maybe they assume that is just totally understood by people. That isn't always the case! Thanks for making great videos i'm really getting a lot out of them

I physically can not sit my horses canter. No matter how hard I try, I just keep bouncing. It’s so annoying and uncomfortable. He’s so bouncy and moves his head a ton so when I can sit it kind of, I’m just pulling on his face.

It's kind of hard to hear what you're saying because the sound is kind of poor quality. It's hurting my ears so I turn the volume down and then I can't hear you..

I like your content, but it always sounds like your yelling into the microphone. It’s so distracting.

I have moved my 🎤 further away but it still sounds the same. Perhaps it would help if you turn your volume down? Thank you for your feedback I will see if I can find another solution.

“This joint” as they point to a dark shadowy area. “Open”… What opens? To the side? Upward? Maybe this makes sense if you already have been doing it for a long time. Otherwise useless. And sorry to be blunt. I really do love people who share information to help others! This just doesn’t translate.

You can be blunt that is fine. I will reply in a blunt manner. There is only one joint in the dark shadowy area ... the hip joint!! Nothing else there just the hip joint. The joint opens and if you watch the video and concentrate on the hip joint you will see which way it opens! It has translated to a lot of people. 😉

Open hip happens when your leg is straight, as in when you are standing . Close hip happens when your leg raises up towards your chest. The most open hip position is a bridge backbend while the most closed would be a forward bend touching your toes

I love this, but I absolutly despise the noseband on the bridle. Its just plain abuse. The horse is being kept from opening its mouth when the bit causes it pain. Please change this!!
