I've been riding for 13 years, more than half my life. I've taken years of hunter/jumper AND dressage lessons, and not one instructor ever taught me how to sit the trot. I even thought I was doing it right, because no instructor ever told me otherwise, and that it was just supposed to be that jolting. After watching your video and practicing it on just a handful of rides, I feel relatively competent at sitting trot - not perfect, but lightyears better than before. You are an exceptional teacher, Josie. Thank you for doing what you do!

The transition from rising trot, to sitting trot, to walk, is where I’m now having difficulty. If the horse braces going into walk, (not walking immediately) how do you stay relaxed to sit trot as I’m bracing my body for a firmer whoah.

Funny you talked about how the ankle must flex- the ONLY way I could sit trot in the beginning was with no stirrups, doing ankle circles- otherwise I would tense up and start gripping. But the ankle circles eventually got my focus off of gripping, AND helped me learn how to flex the ankle. It took a long time for me to be able to sit WITH stirrups, haha, but I got there! Greta videos, you are the best!

Today was my fourth time riding a horse, as I am learning how to ride. My teachers tell me I have excellent balance on a horse and they suggested we try the trot today...so we tried it very briefly. I found myself bouncing! It felt very different than the walk. And I don't want to bounce so I came looking for information! 😀💖 No saddle yet - we are only using a riding pad. But on my next lesson I will see if I can try this, if we do the trot again. Today was also my second time using reins and I learned the emergency dismount too. 💖🐎💖

This is what we just started working on - with no reins and no stirrups on the lunge. It's so hard to get the correct rhythm and feel to be with the horse, not bouncing against. My instructor teaches it exactly like this, so it was wonderful to watch the video and help cement what it feels and looks like. Question: What exercises can you suggest to do at home to strengthen the muscles needed for a better sitting trot? Thank you for sharing this, very much appreciated! I've always watched the pros' belt buckles - it's especially interesting to watch on the really big moving horses! And yes, sitting is easier when the horse gives you a soft place to sit!
