Wonderful tutorial. What was the base coat (paint) and what did you use for the top coat?
@Happyspacediys6 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! 😊 The base paint is a Berh Chalk Paint, and the top coat is a Satin based polyurethane. I've used gold leaf on lots of varieties of paint bases, and they all seem to hold up great. You can use polyurethane or clear furniture wax as a top coat. I haven't had my gold leaf dull when using those products.

WOW!!!! awesome video, once again! Great tip with the baby powder ❤ So you used the dry brush to get any loose pieces off before you put the top coat? It came out AMAZING!! Now I am less intimated to try it!!! Thank you friend!

What top coat did you use?
@Happyspacediys5 ай бұрын
I used a polyurethane top coat. I believe the brand was Varathane. However, any polyurethane top coat will work just fine. You can also use furniture wax as well if you don't like polyurethane 😊 Hope this helps!

Can you use oil based poly for top coat?
@Happyspacediys3 жыл бұрын
An oil based top coat may add a sort of yellowish/amber color where as the water based top coats are clear and keep the original color. If we use a water based product to apply the gold leaf probably best to match it with a water based sealer. Or give it a few days and then come in with that oil based product! Hope this helps! 😊

Did you have to sand before applying anything?
@Happyspacediys Жыл бұрын
Hi Elana! Great question! I personally don't sand before applying gold leaf. The adhesive provides enough for the gl to stick to no problem. The only time I would sand is if it's a painted piece and I'd need it smoothed down before applying top coat to seal it all in. Hope that helps! ❤️

You make it look easy but I'm very nervous. I have some old end tables that the gold leaf has worn almost completely off. Could I put gold leaf on the places that were gold leafed, the have been varnished. What would I put over the gold leafing if anything?
@Happyspacediys3 жыл бұрын
You'll do great! You just gotta kinda go for it! 😅 Absolutely you can put gold leaf over worn out areas! I'd sand it a little, add your adhesive and apply the gold leaf. You can use polyurethane top coat which is what I used here. Or furniture wax which I used in the other vid. Send me pics when you're done! I'd love to see! 💕💕

Can’t you use mod podge as a sealant also?
@Happyspacediys3 жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes. I find that it tends to be inconsistent and can get a little clumpy. Also it's not as self leveling. Which is why I chose the poly. It looks cleaner, easy to apply and self levels. 😊

Why do I not see all the other metal leaf colors use on furniture?
@Happyspacediys9 ай бұрын
My guess, gold leaf is the more popular choice. There are some that use silver and other colors. Gold leafing has a history in art and decor and has been elevated in that sense too. For me, it's what I bought to match the colors I have for projects. It would be fun to try other colors out 😊

How do u feel about also varnishing /top coating with Mod Podge as well???
@Happyspacediys3 жыл бұрын
Great question! As long as products are water based they'll work well together 😊 so for instance, mod podge is a water based product, and the top coat I used also is water based.
