Thank you so much. Most people talk about the barrel adjuster and the nut only. My levers were out of sync, and i wasn't sure what to do. I didn't know what the screws were for. So again thank you very much for such a detailed video.

Excellent , thanks . My brakes had seized due to winter salty slush; your video showed me enough to take them completely apart to clean off the little axle the brake arm rotates on, fit the spring back in and then follow your directions

Great video. I was having trouble putting the brake pads back with all the washers. Turns out the one that had the bike before me just put the washers on any old way so the brake pads didn't sit straight because the conical washers weren't in the right position 6:06 Also. When I had a puncture, I ended up taking a brake pad off to get the tyre off and it is now simple by just unclipping the brake cable 4:27 so I have now done my brakes and everything is working perfectly. Thank you very much.

Excellent video I don't have the spring on my V-brake and moving the screws did not help pull them both at the same time, one seems not to move.
@michaelripley6229
@michaelripley6229 7 жыл бұрын
You probably have them fixed now. But here's an idea. The springs may be internal, in a coil. Your problem could be the pad being worn into shape by the rim. if you gently pull the V-brake arm away then try the brake you may see it stick at the rim.

Fantastic video. I learned a few things I didn't know yet. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to prevent my back brake cable cover/sheath from popping out of the brake lever and the main body of the bike. There are little notches on either end of the cover/sheath that are supposed to hold it in place, but it's escaping somehow, preventing effective braking. Perhaps my cable has stretched out and needs to be replaced?

Great video But my question is Can the tension spring lose its tension over time? The side from the noodle doesnt want to move back in place when i release the brake handle I have tightened and losend the tension screws both sides trying to adjust it still no change
@michaelripley6229
@michaelripley6229 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. To answer your question, yes. But, check both arms move easily and are not sticking. Use some light oil on the pivot points. You can bend the springs to give more tension but over time they will wear out. Sometimes the cable could be rubbing or pushing against something which makes the arms sit unevenly, other cables frame, computer wires etc.

Lucky Australians, their bikes come with the front brake on the right lever, same as all motorcycles. In the US we have to switch our brains around when going back and forth between our motorcycles and our bicycles, which have the front brake connected to the left lever.

The first 2 things I would check are: has the pad worn into the rim or has the spring tension changed. Drop into our Hallam or Heidelberg store, it could be an on the spot fix.

Nice stuff, my v brakes don't have an adjuster for the springs though?
@michaelripley6229
@michaelripley6229 7 жыл бұрын
So sorry with the late answer. If there is really no adjustor screw. Try oiling the pivot point of the arms, not the pads. There should be a spring on each side, If you can see it unclip the cable so the brake relaxes and bend the spring out on the side thats rubbing. If you cannot see the spring it may be an internal wound spring. A lot harder to sort out. Remove brake arm, check that broken parts are present, if all good replace arm with out brake pad and bend arm out. Do this gently as the spring can unclip and will be completely useless.

Hi, can you tell me some thing please. If you change v-brakes from an older bike to a newer(ish) bike, should they they still fit normally. I tried to install my old v-brakes onto my newer m.bike and they seem to not like fitting properly. I'm pretty sure I made a mistake some where along the line because when I turned the wheel to test the brake it wouldnt even move ???? Any idea why this is ? i'm usually great at every thing else apart from brakes...

@michaelripley6229
@michaelripley6229 7 жыл бұрын
Gee that's a while ago. It is a basic Shimano set. Altus or Acera level. They work well enough. The quality and price goes up at the Alivio level. Interestingly as the years go by the technology trickles down so the lower levels become as good as the previous generation of the higher levels.
