I have an older (mid 90's) cannondale with coda smooth post cantilever brakes, but they don't attach to the frame fitting. How do I ensure the correct tension/setup when mounting the calipers?
@rchandos3 жыл бұрын
I have older Shimano smooth post brake pads where the post is not exactly in the center of the pad, but slightly offset toward one end. Why is this, and can they be replaced by the more common type that have the post in the exact center of the pad? Thank you.
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
The brake pads with the stud off-set is common. If this is a replaceable pad style, where the aluminum holder is reused and the pad slides out, be sure the closed end goes forward. Normally, the shorter end of these off-set pads goes toward the fork, for the front, or to the frame, for the rear. It is intended to assist in clearance when opening up. You can replace with either style.

The straddle wire should be very close to 90 degrees when the pads contact the rim to make for best mechanical advantage. Strange he doesn't mention that in this video.

This video helped me better understand how this cantilever brake system works but I still was not able to fix my issue: my front brakes work fine after I adjusted them but my rear brakes do not. The brakes are in idle position 1 or 2mm away from the rim. When I push the brake, they will stop the wheel but then they remain in position. They do not loosen so I have to manually pull them away from the rim...as a result, the whole cable becomes very loose. There is no tension left. When I put the brake pads back in idle position, the tension becomes normal again. It’s like some part is missing some greasing but I don’t know which one...Or could it be because my cable or housing is slightly worn out close to my hands...not sure but any insight would be welcome. Thanks
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
Remove the wheel, and then pull each caliper arm toward the rim. Do you feel any spring tension? You may need to remove each arm and grease the spring and stud. While the wheel is off, pull the cable at the brake end with one hand and pull the lever with the other. Does it feel like there is much cable friction?
@ofthelord10203 жыл бұрын
Dirty pivots, you need to clean your brakes, i just had the same problem and i put the brakes in boiling water after using wd40 on all the pivots and working it in, then once you remove them from the water dry for a min and while still hot put oil on all the pivots and work it in the joints. The dirt and grime in the joints is what is stopping you brakes from springing back.
@Paul580692 жыл бұрын
Your brake pad, when really crooked or positioned incorrectly, or both, can get stuck under the rim. If so, use new brakepads or rub the old ones flat on a piece of coarse sandpaper. THen adjust them correctly so they land flat on the side of the rim, without the tendency to slide under.
@nugenki6 жыл бұрын
3:46 I would have thought this would result in the greater mechanical advantage.
@wingerrrrrrrrr3 жыл бұрын
It seemed the same to me also, but it could be that the x displacement is smaller for a given cable travel, so it may require too much extra travel on the brake lever when braking.

I absolutely detest these brakes as I always have a hard time adjusting them, keeping them in place when tightening is such a pain! Something I noticed you did but did not explain was why you have the brake pad sticking out so far? The closer it is to the arm, wouldn't that make it less likely to shudder? Maybe that's the trouble I'm having, I adjust there with the pad right up against the arm? Help me out, thanks! :)
@parktool5 жыл бұрын
There are many things going on in the "smooth stud" cantilever, where pads can move in and out toward the caliper arm. However that aspect is not so important. Try this as a thought experiment. Consider only the caliper arms, not pads at all. Attach the brake wire and adjust the cable carrier so the arms are parallel to one another. Consider a line from the frame mounting bolt to the bolt holding the pad. Those should be parallel, basically the "working position", not a relaxed position. Now in this position, install and adjust each pad so it is touching the rim, each pad with some toe. Pull the lever to test. Use the barrel adjuster set the feel at the lever.

how do you get that tension from the other cable(running from brake to handle)? mine is to loose and i won‘t activate the break.
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
Begin at the head of the brake cable. Inspect that it is fitted into the lever properly. Follow the cable out the lever and see that cable housing is seated into the lever adjusting barrel. As a test, drop the wheel and pull down on the cable and work the lever. It should pull on the cable.

Park Tool rear brake. The sleeve thats on the frame that the brake arm slides onto so that you can bolt the brake arm onto it. Maybe i just get a longer bolt will solve the problem
@parktool6 жыл бұрын
Some of those bosses are replaceable and they come in 2-3 different thread pitches. If there are wrench flats close to the frame you should be able to thread them out and get new ones. beware they use red or green thread locker to install them and they will be extremely tight and I would suggest using a heat gun to help if your bosses have wrench flats. If not, You are out of luck unless you have a local frame builder that would be willing to weld a new one back on, If it is steel at least.
