I've been flyfishing for 35+ years, with the net and things like your channel on KZbin has helped me give a name to the techniques, fly patterns have become more available outside the pages of my favorite books. Thank you so much for putting this info out there. I almost feel like I'm not alone anymore with my fishing. It's funny cause when I fish I land tons and people are quick to come over ask what bait are you using,I may just start selling flies I tie through the week to folks on the water, they will just have to visit your channel to learn HOW to fish em. Thanks brother

Biggest problem I have with this style, is that many of the places I fish are single hook only, and around here that means one fly, not just no trebles. You can learn so much from fishing multiples flies, and it doesn't hurt the fish you catch any more than any other single hook, though I guess one damages more of them. I would love to hear more about euro vs other techniques, when you are down to one fly.
@hillfolkflyfishing51047 жыл бұрын
You an still use this technique with a single nymph. It's actually a pretty common thing in skinnier pocket water.
@dennissmathers53915 жыл бұрын
After studying this euro technique, seems to me the same result could be achieved with an excellent quality ultralite spinning rod/reel combo. with a swivel and appropriate tippet. This looks WAY more complicated than it needs to be, especially for delayed harvest applications.
@hillfolkflyfishing51045 жыл бұрын
I spinning rod might work, if it was 10 ft long, and if you could cast a size 18 nymph on it (which you can't). Lob your flies, let them drift, set the hook, catch the fish. It really couldn't get any simpler.

I’m thinking about adding a tight line specific rod to my fly fishing arsenal, but I have a couple questions. In the area I fish, there are times where tight lining seem like it would be best but there are also big water situations which would require an indicator. Will I still be able to use say yarn or smaller thingamabobber style indicators using a 10’ 3wt fly rod or would I have to sacrifice tightline sensitivity and move up to a 10’ 4wt or 5wt fly rod?

I feel the same way. If one already has all the gear, why bother buying all new stuff, just to fish a small number of flies, on a short line.
@JessHull6 жыл бұрын
this is a great video very informative. Question though. If you're not casting any fly line why bother with fly fishing gear? wouldn't a long ultralight centrepin or spinning set up accomplish the same?
@hillfolkflyfishing51046 жыл бұрын
Jess Hull I suppose you could make it work, but the size of the flies and the light tippet would make it really difficult. Also, I really only focused on nymphing techniques in the video, but I regularly use this setup for dry flies, dry-dropper, and even streamers sometimes. It’s extremely versatile
@101mossie6 жыл бұрын
Use whatever suits you there are no rules, a fast action 8ft fly rod works better when nymphing, it’s springs heavy nymphs forward with much less effort, a 6ft luminous furled leader attached to any flyline with 6ft of tippet with 2 flies 3ft apart, it’s very uncomplicated, the luminous yellow furled leader is better than any braided leader and better for bite indication IMO. If your nymphing all day you don’t want to be flogging a 10ft rod on a river, no need. Enjoy 👍🏻
@hillfolkflyfishing51046 жыл бұрын
Blondie Byrne I actually learned on an 8ft 4wt. But a 10ft+ has quite a few advantages over a shorter rod. And these newer nymphing rods are so light and well balanced that it’s really not bad.

its kind of like Tenkara meets high sticking. Ive kind of used this style with my Tenkara when nymphing,,,hard to see the Sighter in rough water so Ill switch to a indicator
@ryantherock76648 жыл бұрын
So basically you "lead" the flies across and down the current with the rod tip.Do you keep the sighter in the zone where it enters the water?
@hillfolkflyfishing51048 жыл бұрын
There are several different techniques you can use depending on the situation and the conditions. Generally I like to keep a slight "bow" in my leader that way I can see it twitch or get tight when a fish takes. How high you keep your sighter all depends on the depth of water you are fishing but ideally you always want to keep your sighter downstream of your flies, otherwise you wont see or feel the takes. I think I'm going to do another czech nymphing video pretty soon to try and explain some of the subtleties of it better than I did in this one.

Are you then consistently changing the tippet length if the pools or runs vary in depth? I'd imagine a lot of tippet usage/waste?
@hillfolkflyfishing51048 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest advantages of this technique are that you don't have to keep changing the rigging up. All you have to do to change depth is change your rod angle as opposed to a suspension rig like an dry-dropper or indicator nymphing where your depth is determined by tippet length. Hope this helps!
@BassNtsuab8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! If the fly keeps getting stuck on the bottom while using the rod to guide it, I assume the rig is just too heavy? Just choose different Nymphs? What if the rig is too light and you cannot feel anything? Is it about finding that balance?
@ConederateShots508 жыл бұрын
Forgive me if i'm being shallow, but is there anything other than the "gear" and the czech nymph stigma that makes this different than high-lining a traditional nymph rig with something like a NZ style indicator, or just a general upstream swing? I would imagine the nymph presentation may be more natural and the casting is lighter, but is there some sort of 'forbidden technique' type of deal to this style of fishing? I've heard praise from fellow fly-fisherman of euro nymphing, and have done sparse research, but if you could answer me "what makes it BETTER" I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
@hillfolkflyfishing51048 жыл бұрын
The particular style that I use is a basically just all of the best parts from several different techniques like french, polish, czech, spanish, etc. all combined into a more modern competition style simply known as "euro-nymphing". The biggest advantage to this style IMO is the versatility. A lot of the guys that compete on the Team USA flyfishing team are personal friends of mine and I've learned a ton from them. My boss is actually the coach of the youth team. This is a technique developed by those guys for competition because it is fast and effective and that's what it takes to win. Typically you won't use any indicator and the reason is because indicators are illegal in comps. So you can try to fish a dry-dropper and continually have to change your rigging for different depths or you can get good at reading a sighter. You can fish one or two nymphs, or a dry-fly if your cast is decent. You can adjust your depth just by simply changing your rod angle. It's fantastic. There is definitely a "holier than though" attitude with some guys that euro-nymph and I certainly don't want to come across that way. I hope this helps, I am working on a part 2 for this video to try and explain things a little better. tight lines!
@ConederateShots508 жыл бұрын
That DOES help explain things a little better. I really appreciate your response, and i'm sure one of these days I will get around to giving it a whirl on my local water. The way you make it sound, you'd think everyone would be doing it! I look forward to the 'part two,' ill be sure to tune in for it. By the way - who is your boss? You had mentioned he was the coach of the youth team? I would love to look into getting involved with that, being a high school junior. Anyway, thanks for the wisdom. Tight lines to you as well!

Do use primarily barbless hooks when you fish this euro style?
@hillfolkflyfishing51047 жыл бұрын
Yes, I prefer barbless hooks for pretty much any type of fly fishing except big streamers. Way easier on the fish and much faster getting the fly out of the fishes mouth and back in the water.

always use barbless. no reason not to.

What's the rule of thumb of how much tippit after your two tone indicator
@jacobbeers11367 жыл бұрын
depth / speed of water will dictate - rule of thumb being 1 and 1/2 the depth to your first fly (on the dropper) point fly is typically 18" from the dropper (off the tag) as a starting point - 6" shorter or longer is fine as a general rule.

Great video. Im a new in czech nymphing, and I'm wondering if i could use a regular fly line with euro nymph leader (like yours) and use it as a euro nymphing and at the same time I wanna use a dry fly if its necessary by changing a leader. Thanks
@hillfolkflyfishing51048 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know a few guys that do that and it does work. However, it isn't going to be nearly as effective as using a flat line because the weight of the line in the rod guides causes a belly in the line that gravity will pull towards the ground which in turn pulls on your leader and that will cause drag on your flies which will bring them up out of the strike zone. It's a little difficult to explain in a comment but I could do a video about it. I can cast a dry or a dry-dropper on my nymphing setup plenty far enough for pretty much any situation on the river. Like I said in the video, it's not pretty but you can do it if you practice. Great question and thanks for the comment!

WNC Outdoors . Thanks for info. If you do a new video about that i will understand more about euro nymphing. Thanks again
@awaken778 жыл бұрын
You can probably do with some super-thin fly line, like weight 0. RIO does LT DT 000F and 00F. These lines are for ultralight dry fly presentation, but also can be used for short line nymphing. The problem with conventional fly line is that fly line have a slack between reel and stripping guide, and it creates a drag towards the bottom end of the rod , pulling the leader back out of the water. So , it compromises the main idea of czech/short nymphing - direct contact with the flies on the tight leader . Once you have a slack in the system, you can't feel subtle takes
@flyfishingeasternsierras86647 жыл бұрын
Just use a 25 foot leader that way no fly line comes off of the reel. A lot of guys do that. Regular fly line sags causing drag.

Well, he wasn’t lying. I can achieve the same results, or better. I can do it using any length rod in 0-3 wt. I primarily “euro” nymph with a 6’6 2wt Orvis one ounce. High sticking or Simply French style nymphing can be done without a specific rod. While I will agree depending on where you are fishing, a10-11 ft rod would have an advantage. I prefer my 10’2 0wt for these circumstances.
