This video will teach you one method on how to tie maybe the best (and certainly one of the strongest) line-to-leader fishing knots, the FG Knot! This knot can be used any time you need a surefire way to connect two lines together, and this video is packed with step-by-step instructions complete with details and tips. Once you learn the steps in this video, you should be able to tie this knot in less than one minute with just a little practice! This is one of the most widely used fishing knots which is easy/fast to tie and can be used to catch anything from trout, perch, largemouth or smallmouth bass, pike, muskie, salmon, red snapper, tuna, trigger fish, grouper, mackerel... basically anything you catch with a hook can be caught using this knot! This knot is similar in strength and simplicity to the double uni knot, alberto knot, pr knot, alright knot, palomar knot, trilene knot, improved clinch knot, loop knot, albright knot, fg knot, and others! Subscribe for more knots and tips, and thanks for watching!
Quick disclaimer: This is but one of many methods to successfully tie this knot, and it happens to be the best one I have found! I hope it works equally well for you, but if it doesn't, or if you have found something else that works better, I encourage you to stick to what works for you! I would always recommend practicing the knots and testing their strength yourself to ensure you are comfortable with how they work, and to avoid flinging lures into the ocean on a failed knot (ask me how I know!). Knots take practice, so make sure you're comfortable with whatever you're tying prior to trusting it with your gear! If you have any questions about the knot, please post them below and I will do my best to answer them. I hope this is helpful, and tight lines!

@@JustTheLip Id LOVE to see this knot tested with a fish scale, and get a sense of its break point/slip point vs the general strength of the linage itself. This is neat and makes me what to scale it up in radio tower work when we're lifting and lowering 800 lb hybrid cables; we already do something similar to this, but there's always room for improvement, and your tests would probably scale up for what I'd use it for in most cases. (*side note* with the most earnest respect, at 7:00 all the "Strength" is in that half hitch or whatever the final knot is and not the braids unless the braids slip before the hitch breaks. The braids are treating the larger line as the barrel point so without any significant bites I agree the braids (baskets) are the strongest point, however, the hitch introduces the tightest radius outside the braids coefficient of friction and so assuming the braids don't slip, then the hitch is the weak point on the system. My theory is if you did a break test, it would snap at around 60-65% of the rated strength of the weakest line. To the rest of the people who might read this, the knots provide no additional strength, it is simply a hitch to prevent the braid from slipping, and to keep those braids under tension; the overlapping of the two strands can have a cutting action, but the friction will develop in the cinching hitch at the very end first before those forces can begin to evenly distribute into the FG Knot. I must say though, this shits on a timber hitch. Love this.) ~Cheers.

@TrueHelpTV i have seen a few videos of this k ot compared to others when it really started to take off with the easier ways to tie it this holds around 90-100% knot strenth over multiple tests compared to another popular knot the albright that only has 70-80% the realy only improvment that can be done is less half hitches and a dab of a good soft silicon based super glue that has flex i personaly use a tiny bit of sikaflex just keeps the half hitch from sliping over time

I've watched no less than 15 fg knot tutorials, but I will say... this is a lot easier to be done when using super heavy leader line such as what's shown in this video and all other videos ive seen. It's much harder to do this on leader line that is much thinner like 6-10 pound flouro. Having leader line that isn't as rigid as what's used in this video makes this almost impossible for the leader to not twist. I'd like to see this same video with small leader. Despite this, the video was very well done and one of the best I've seen.

@andersriksson100

Thin is more difficult, I use extra 3.0 mag glasses and keep a moderate tension on the braid, too much and it will twist the leader.

Copy that. For thin leaders i prefer this knot: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5DRmYZqfcmFqKMsi=m35UhGoq_oQa73Iy&t=940 I don't know the name and I have never seen it in english tutorials - seems to be a German thing. But works perfectly for me for the thinner ones and runs nicely through the guides aswell. Also relatively easy and quick to tie.

Best way to tie an FG knot I’ve seen yet. Super simple with the triangle method. Smart. Good vid. 👍🏻 (edit: I do like a Rizzuto finish on all braid-to-leader knots though because it builds a small cone kind of ramp that makes the wear on the main line braid side of the knot pass through the guides much smoother.)

Thank you, I’m glad you liked it! And yeah, I understand the appeal of the Rizutto, I just haven’t found it personally worth the extra time… the three last half hitches build a small ramp as well, although admittedly not as neatly as the Rizutto! Thank you for the comment and for watching!

I use a double Uni knot for smaller diameter lines but this looks like a great knot for heavy leader. You did an excellent job of slowly and concisely explaining the knot step by step and then repeating it was a great way of getting people to remember how to tie it. Fantastic job! I have tied this knot for 7 years. My way sucks in a 20 knot wind and waves. I will try your way. I have never had mine fail. Only one half hitch, trim leader to about 1/16”, melt tag end with windproof torch lighter to create mushroom end on leader, then finish with 10 half hitches.done. If you want it more secure, superglue the half hitches and first half of fg.. Tip…superglue will smooth out the transition from 10lb braid to 50lb leader. I use this knot in all sizes of braid up to 100lb and all sizes of leaders up to 150lb. All my tarpon and trolling setups get superglued! They don’t fail, ever!

There is a better way to make the transition from your mainline onto the leader, a lot smoother using something akin to a snell knot on the mainline in front of the leader tag. I cast and retrieve my FG knot through the runners, there is a problem; once those 3x half hitches get abraded, and that bit slightly longer tag will catch and that especially the top eye causes wear on the half hitches, then the FG comes undone. Before I learned this trick, I used to have to retie the FG knot every session or even more often as it was getting worn and sometimes even failed in the middle of a long session. In summary, FG knot 2X half hitches snell knot up the mainline When tying the snell you actually run half the snell over the tag end and then a little bit up the mainline and then come back up to the tag but not over it, then head back up the mainline. About 18 rounds is Plenty. It really doesn’t add much time to tie and makes the not rock solid and smooth to retrieve. so when you’re retrieving line what the rod tip encounters in order is single thicknesssnell Double thickness snell Tag/Single thickness again snell over the tag 2x half hitches then the FG And that last forever and is smooth as silk through the top eye and runners

Tuna fisherman here. Try setting up the Rizutto finish first, tighten that down, and that will act as a dam for the FG knot to butt against while it cinches onto the leader. You'll know the braid bites into the line when it changes color (it should darken). If the braid doesn't change color, the knot will fail. Creating that dam will help the finished end of that knot stay where it should be and get a full bit into the leader (if you just do the half hitch, it doesn't quite get the full bite, like your not @6:30). Lastly, melt the leader tag nub with a lighter to create a small bulb that will never slip through the knot.

@@JustTheLip Your method has now gone worldwide, btw. I'll be flexing your FG method in glorious Cornwall, UK. My last attempt saw me wave goodbye to a £30 patchinko 125 sea bass lure, FG gave up the ghost during my cast. Been too scared to tell the wife yet, so haven't attempted another FG since, but now feel fully confident that I got this! Again, thank you, Sir! 👍

Ultimately, it has been my experience that the size of the lines will be what determines how you do the locking knot. I became a fan of this knot a few years back and lock mine with 2 single half hitches and never had a failure. My failures are usually the leader line itself. Which has typically been a result of just not feel checking the line for nicks often enough. If your fishing bodies of water with zebra muscles. Check your line often, cause they will nick up your line something fierce. I really like your method of making the knot in this video. I tend to use a really long leader so I don't have to retie as often simple because the technique I learned is very cumbersome and hard to tie confidently while on the water. I feel like I could actually use this method while on the water and keep the same level of confidence in the knot. Kudos to the person who taught you this method and good job your video. Your angle, lighting, and background made it very easy to see the knot being tied.

I have never had that knot unravel, amazing. I've even just used one half hitch at the end and it's held. There's been some where due to my sloppiness the braid unravels a little but it never unraveled. I like this method because I usually use the rod as tension and that's hard sometimes on a Kayak. Great video!

I've used this knot exclusively for several years for braid/mono connections. This is a great demonstration. I did it this way until I saw Ott DeFoe's video using the looped line tensioned by the rod and tied to the reel handle. It's a great method that is easier for me. I agree on the 3x3 half hitches being enough but I also like to tie three more after I clip the mono so that there isn't a sharp edge on top of the knot to catch on anything when reeling it in. When you're tying this if you realize it's not smooth and there's a loop or hitch somewhere in the knot then you've done something wrong and need to start over.

I tie this knot exactly like you’ve demonstrated here. I use 16 loops +-. My finish is different but I’ve never had any issues with it ever. I tie 3 half hitches over both lines like you did, then I tie a risotto and I’m done after trimming my lines away. I’ve never had any problem with my knots coming loose nor failing after use through the guides.

I am a huge fan of the FG knot, but I am using it on light braid / trace (4lb braid to 6 or 8lb trace). I have been using a different method of tying the knot as it works well with thin lines, but I will give this method a try. I foresee issues with the trace tag end not being stiff enough to weave. Hopefully I’m wrong as this is a great compact & fast method to lay the wraps. Thank you for one of the best knot tutorials on KZbin.

Worked like a charm all chinook salmon season. Long casting with 4 ounces and a 25-foot mono leader to main line braid. Only lost one setup all season due to knot failure, and I’m sure it was my fault. This knot withstands tremendous force.

Finally someone who can explain this knot in a way that not only makes sense, but that is replicable and repeatable. And that gives an explanation of how and why this knot works. I'm a do-it-all kinda fisherman. In that I want my rods to be able to go from casting cranks to slip bobbering. So I need a thin-profile knot, and I've wanted to use this knot for a while, just couldn't ever figure out how to tie it.
